The Bond films have had a number of ski/snow/ice chase sequences.
In your opinion which was the best and which one was the worst...and why?

The Best:

I'm going to go for OHMSS, I know it's my favorite and all, so this may sound biased, but it's very well made, some memorable moments as well, like when Bond knocks the thug off the cliff, not to mention his and Tracey's attempted escape, resulting in her capture due to the avalanche.

Worst: I choose TWINE, don't get me wrong it's a good film, but this scene felt rather pointless, it is a tad enjoyable, but it lacks the excitement of other ski scenes.

On another note, I must be the only one that is not at all bothered about 'California Girls' playing during the pre-title sequence of AVTAK, it's not a decision I would have personally made, but it doesn't make me cringe or anything.

I would have to say that the best ski chase for me is a toss-up between OHMSS and FYEO, but OHMSS narrowly comes out on top. Both are just so fast, intense and full of excitement. And the music makes both of them all the better! The only highlight of TSWLM's chase was the memorable Union Jack parachute jump; up until that point, nothing really stands out other than Rog's loud yellow ski suit. That's just me of course :cooltongue: But TWINE is definitely the worst, nothing about that ski chase was anything to go 'Wow!' over. Very bland.

The best one is FYEO. I dont think we'll ever see a ski chase as fast and intensive as this one.

I think three out of five are superb;

OHMSS
FYEO
TSWLM
If pressed,I'd go with OHMSS as my fave. But It's tough to choose over FYEO.

Shame about the skiing sequence in TWINE. It just runs along rails, the parahawks seem more of a hazard to their occupants than anyone else, and there is no real sense of jeopardy.
VTAK. It's been so long since I watched it,as VTAK is my least favourite of the series, that I almost hesitate to comment. But I recall that after a promising opening with Bond retreiving the mcguffin from the dead agent,it rapidly went south and, yes,California Girls did make me groan(and not with pleasure!).
I think the booby prize, for sheer flaccidness, goes to TWINE.

I like them all.

I must say I do love the PTS of TSWLM, just a classic ski chase. OHMSS is great too, as is FYEO.

I enjoy the others. I just get annoyed by the Beach Boys over the top of the AVTAK one.

I would have said AVTAK would have been worst ski chase for that very reason, but it also got bonus points for originality as it was only Bond film in which Bond snowboards rather than skis.

Oh and this thought just occurred to me. If we're referring to best ski chase sequences, then can we count the brief water-SKI sequence in LTK? :cooltongue:

I'd have to go with FYEO just ahead of OHMSS, but both are great Ski sequences. As for the worst, probably TWINE but I do get really annoyed (like a lot of people) with the Beach Boys music in AVTAK.

I like the TWINE one, even though it's nonsense.

Especially the line "See you back at the lodge.."

Favorite(s): OHMSS

Least: AVTAK. "California Girls", underwhelming chase, and an iceberg sub... Not a popular PTS with me.

That one is a lot of fun. One thing right after another with the initial chase, the ambush and then the bobsleds.

The scenes in Cortina in FYEO are a big favourite of mine, in general, in my favourite Bond film. I also think it has one of the most touching scenes in any Bond movie - Bond taking Melina back to the station on a horse and carriage.

And the ski chase is really good, involving motorbikes and the big ski jump.

The only ski chase I really like is the one in OHMSS. The rest aren't a big deal for me (yeah, even FYEO doesn't do that much for me). TWINE is the worst, though.

I'm hoping BOND 22 can provide us with a ski chase that's intense, fast, and hard-edged. I think the potential is there for Forster and co. to provide us with the best ski chase of the franchise.

Me too. With a pigeon double-take thrown in for the Moonraker fans.

TWINE's was flat out inexcusable and it was all too apparent that Bogner wasn't involved. They didn't even bother hooking up with one of Bogner's MTV contemporaries. Bottom line is that they just shouldn't have bothered. If ever there was an argument against Vic Armstrong as second unit director...

Bond's escape from Piz Gloria in OHMSS. Filmed with authentic skiing, integral to plot of the movie, comes straight from the book, is visually cool (I want to ski this) and leads into the dramatic highlight of the movie-Bond exhausted at the skating rink. I can watch this scene over and over (and do, I never claimed to be sane).

I am not a huge fan of FYEO or its ski chase. But I think one of the more underrated suspense moments is the build-up prior to the ski chase as Loque and his men pursue Bond up to the ski jump. Even the normally fearless Bond seems a bit intimidated by the massive ski jump.

I also think Bill Conti's score helps a lot in this scene. And I like the song 'Runaway' during the ski chase, but I can't help but thinking it zaps some of the suspense out of the rest of the sequence.

OHMSS still rules the ski sequences with TWINE in last.

I love OHMSS, and definately FYEO, but I'll also add AVTAK to the mix, just because Barry's score absolutely sells this sequence. It is without a doubt his best action cue of the series, and should have replaced the Bond theme :cooltongue: Only kidding on that last part, maybe.

TWINE is definitely the worst.

Followed by AVTAK, which is otherwise boring for me, but gets a bonus point for the decade-ahead-of-its-time snowboarding aspect, though it forfeits half that point for the California girl

Looks to me like the majority loved the ski chase scene in OHMSS, while FYEO gets first runner up.

I definitely agree that the ski chase in TWINE was so tired that it made me yawn. They could have done a much better job with that. I have even heard that Pearce Brosnan had to learn how to ski before the film. Thank goodness for stunt doubles!!!

On Her Majesty's Secret Service has a brilliant ski sequence, it might even be the best in film history. The Spy Who Loved Me is great too, but can't match OHMSS. I thought that For Your Eyes Only was very exciting too, with the motorcycles and the East German athlete. I enjoyed the one in A View to a Kill as well, thanks to the great music and the Cold War atmosphere. The World Is Not Enough is, to me, the least convincing, but still it is always fun to watch Bond escaping on skis.

For once,I'm going to go with the majority. OHMSS is the best and TWINE the weakest. OHMSS certainly has the best photography and music. It's also quite unique-it's the only one at night time [well, the first one in the film anyway]and is the only one which has the main villain join in the pursuit.

I would probably rank FYEO second after OHMSS-it's really long [I like long action sequences that you can get sucked into] and features Bill Conti's best scoring in the film. The people pursuing Bond actually seem quite skilful themselves. TSWLM is also great but a little short. As for AVTAK,I don't actually mind the Beach Boys bit,it's typical Moore Bond, silly but fun silly. Which leaves TWINE-just mediocre, not especially bad, just uninspired.

May be wrong, but I believe Iain Johnstone's The World is Not Enough: A Companion has bit about that skiing sequence.

I always think of FYEO when it comes to ski chases so it's the best to me...AVTAK's ski chase was good too.

I don't remember TWINE ski scene cause I haven't seen that movie in a while (it's funny I remember they wouldn't stop showing it on TV but then they stopped and I still don't own it so..blah)

Twine is the worst because of the way BOnd escapes. He relies on a gadget which really make me mad, why couldn't he have out witted his opponents like in OHMSS.
