I was just looking around over at Walmart.com when I came across this.

James Bond Encyclopedia
Author: Cork, John
Publisher: DK Publishing
Publish date: Oct 2007
Format: Hardcover, 320 pages

This is the first thing I've heard about this. Has this been officially announced yet? I absolutely adore the books from DK publishing and this sounds terrific. 320 pages dwarfs DK's "James Bond: The Secret World of 007."

It's also on Amazon. I saw it a while back, but no one will give me any information about it (and I know both the authors). I don't understand all the mystery, but I know I'll be getting it. :cooltongue:

I posted about this a while back, and I think Athena may have talked to John Cork about it. Not sure of the details...

Now THIS looks like a serious contender to my copy of James Bond The Legacy.

I have a strange feeling this could be as bland as most of the official EON product. Lots of glossy pics but nothing we don't already know. But I might be wrong.

Agreed. Remember the last DK book only featured Pierce Brosnan's image throughout the book.

When I first read this I thought the Rubin book was being resurrected yet again.

I will wait until it comes out to pass judgement on it. It sounds promising given John Cork's involvement, but I'm wondering if it can offer anything new as far as information on all things Bond, especially considering it's Eon-approved, meaning safe and nothing that isn't above board.

Not to mention the price will likely run around $50 or so. I don't really need to pay that much for yet another reminder that Bond used a rebreather in Thunderball and it can be used for 3 minutes or Jaws was played by 7 foot 2 inch Richard Kiel in The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.

But I'll wait and see. Maybe it will be a pleasant surprise.

Not so sure about this one yet, as it may be just another publicity book that offers little new information. I'd like to page through it first before shelling out any clams.

I'm with you on that.

How much more can they tell us/show us we haven't had already?

Seems an excuse to regurgitate old stuff with CR added on gold-plated with the association of one of the biggest names in Bond-dom (for what that's worth).

At least it's not compulsory to buy until its out and we've had the chance to inspect it. But I for one won't be the "test driver" on it.

Personally, I don't think this book is really aimed for the fan that has read most of the other books. All new non-fiction books essentially have this same "problem" This just seems to be more for the casual fan who doesn't know a whole lot about the subject or doesn't read a lot of these types of books.

I don't know. The Legacy put a fresh spin on things even if it was familiar territory. I'm sure this will do something similar. Who knows. Too early to tell.

Save for some Casino Royale stuff and the odd photo of some now very old / dead people, is this going to add much that's new? Not sure it's tempting enough. If I see it in a bookshop, doubtless I will flick through it and that may well change my mind, I suppose.

I hope so. Bond should be supported in all mediums, so they can keep books like this going. Quality can be argued, but I am happy for fresh books to be coming out of late.

Fair point; probably better that it exists than not.

Personally, I've been burned before and am becoming a bit jaded in reading the same old reheated stuff over again, but true - keeps Bond in the public eye in a filmless year. Whether that's ultimately a terribly good reason and a justification to publish I cannot say.
