Quentin Tarantino's Bond blast

Quentin Tarantino has accused Bond bosses of stealing his idea to make 'Casino Royale' into the latest Bond film.

The 43-year-old director was in the running to take over directing duties for the last 007 adventure and suggested that Ian Fleming's book would be perfect.

Tarantino said: "I resent that none of them gave me a shout out to recognise that I'm the one who got them to make 'Casino Royale'."

In May 2004, Tarantino publicly revealed his Bond ambition, saying: "I've always wanted to do it. I bumped into Pierce Brosnan and we talked about it. He liked the idea.

"I would like to do the original 'Casino Royale' book and do it more or less the way the Ian Fleming book is. I don't know if they're going to go for it, but I'm letting them know I'm interested."

After Daniel Craig replaced Pierce Brosnan as the suave spy, Tarantino was told by bosses they were not interested in his pitch.

Tarantino also claims movie mogul Harvey Weinstein put forward his name to Bond chiefs.

The 'Pulp Fiction' director said: "They told him, 'We're afraid Quentin's going to make it too good and [censored] the rest of the series.'"

[mra]Agreed. Seems cobbled together from old stuff. Does anyone actually think QT was ever in the running to direct a Bond film being that he

I like Tarentino's work, but when it comes to films, he's as big a blowhard as I am! He's got something to say on just about anything and because he's in the business, his opinion is somehow given credence as fact.

I'd love to have heard his pitch:

"Yeah, the one book that hasn't been done - let me be as faithful as I can, you know, like the originals in the 60s."

Wow, Quentin, what a novel, original, ingenious idea. You must have been the only person to have ever come up with that one. Like all your other ideas, 'cos you never retread, rehash, remake, homage anything.

Idiot! (let me tell you how I really feel).

Like Zencat, I'm having trouble believing QT's dumb enough to say any such thing. He's a hustler,n a motormouth and a tireless self-promoter, yes. But he's also a brilliant film maler who actually talks his walk--and I think he's way too smart to shovel smack like that.

Could be recycled. Or Tarantino is still pissed off.

Kind of odd that Edward Fox has only recently bashed Craig.

Oh, when did Tarantino suggest this? 1999 perhaps? the day eon finally obtained the rights to CR? I dont think so , when eon obtained the rights it was only a matter of time before they made it. :cooltongue:

Why would Tarantino give this exclusive interview with all these great quotes to this website we've never heard of, and yet it appears nowhere else?

Ditto the Edward Fox quotes.

Both stories *may* have some truth to them, but they're hardly from reliable sources, and context is often all. Do we really want to do the same thing we did for every rumour to hit CR for the next film, too*? Please let's not!

*Which I hear will be called "Beyond The Ice", according to Trashtalkmovies.net.

A ) Doubt this is of any truth

B ) I think EON's been dying to do Casino Royale pretty much since since before Quentin was potty trained, so the "They stole my idea!" line is about as credible as a paper umbrella.

I had the idea that EON should try to get the right to CR and film it with Timothy Dalton 20years ago. How come I didn't get credit for my idea?

Whatever else may be true, I disagree that the Bond producers have so little faith in the movies they've made that they'd quiver in fear that a single QT film would destroy the credibility of their entire body of work.

I think the general reaction to this story should be summed up with a resounding "Har-de-har-har."

Actually, those ARE his words.

However the ending of the itnerview doesn't sound like him at all. I don't want to think that Q.T. would be jealous for not filming Royale but if he is it shows him in a very bad light....the poor sport kind.

What is this website's fascination with linking to recycled tabloid stories?

And if Tarantino did say any of that, he's even more of an idiot than I ever thought he was.

A million different people probably suggested CR once the rights had been secured (which was before 2004). Q.T wasn't the only one.

Having said that, knowing what I do about Q.T, I'm not convinced he's been quoted him in the right context.

I wouldn't put it past QT to have said something like this. He has a huge ego. He wasn't shy about ripping Oliver Stone a new one over his version of Tarantino's original script for Natural Born Killers.

But it's a bit of the pot calling the kettle black if the master of taking other people's concepts and making them seem original is taking Eon to task for something they've only been at for the last 45 years. QT, I dig your films and your style, usually, but do something original sometime soon. Grindhouse looks really dire.

i wouldnt have minded seeing tarantino doing a faithful adaptation. whenever i see the movie i wish the bombers guts would go flying everywhere like the dudes wearing the straw hats in the book (just a fantasy as a fanboy), although i know that would be to graphic for them to put in a bond film even with this being a reboot.

i think tarantino would have gone with that if he was given free control. i knew he wouldnt get to do it though since he is not in the directors guild.

I can't stand Quentin Tarantino's work. Yes, I liked Pulp Fiction, but PF was a goddamn fluke. Reservoir Dogs was mildly OK in my opinion (Yes, I know it was an indie flick), but Kill Bill...I don't think a movie has ever pissed me off before I watched both Kill Bills in one sitting.

Quentin is a piece of garbage filmmaker who thinks he's special because he loads his movies with pop culture references and doesn't cut his scenes in order. Then he fills them up with random conversations he must have recorded or overheard in a restaurant and threw in his flaming obsessions for Japanese culture and Uma Thurman's feet.

It was boring as snot and frankly I didn't care much for the action scenes. If I want to see a protagonist warding off a massive army solo, there's always that scene in Matrix Reloaded.

He also thinks he's special and that he doesn't need to put any extras on his DVDs until they've been out for 10 or 15 years. I actually wished he had done a full special features DVD for Kill Bill so I could see him try to justify that awful piece of crap.

I like to think I'm open to things in the Bond Universe, but if QT gets his hands on a license, that's it for me.

I actually wrote a letter to EON in the mid to late 80s saying they should make CR and, just to avoid confusion with the Sellers movie, they should title it, "A Whisper of Hate." Eat that Tarantino. MY idea had originality!!!

I like QT and his work but realize he's an egoistical blow hard too. He may have said some of this or it may be out of context. So far I'm just like everyone else here- pretty much.

One thing I will say for QT is that he is an excellent film critic. He collects prints of films and brings them to town and intros each one. He is usually correct in his assessment, IMHO, and I think that it would be exciting to see what he has to say about CR.

Allow me for a moment to have my soapbox rant about Quentin Tarantino and the fact that I'm relieved he didn't get to do Casino Royale:

I realize that a lot of people here are fans of his films, and I respect that. I'm not trying to knock anyone who likes his work. Personally I think his movies are overrated and I just get turned off by his extensive use of violence, blood and gore. To me its a different sort of violence than you would find in Bond movies or other action flicks that I like.. I don't know how to exactly explain it..
Resevoir Dogs I saw two times and I will NOT watch it again..
Pulp Fiction I actually used to sort of like when I was in high school 11-12 years ago, but my copy if it has been sitting on my shelf for the last 7 or 8 years and I've really had no urge to put it on since then.

Haven't seen Jackie Brown... and I actually saw maybe 5 minutes of Kill Bill (not sure which part it was) on TV a couple of months ago and that was enough for me.

I remember when he guest directed an episode of ER about 10 years ago.. the television adds for it promised it to be the most intense, gory episode yet (or something to that effect)..and from what I remember, the episode's gore factor was like 10 times the norm. I soon stopped watching ER for good after that! lol.

Quentin himself bugs me.. Whether it was his Red Carpet meltdown where he swore and spit on an Entertainment Weekly guy because his magazine published an article about Queintin's father. The reporter who got yelled at, wasn't even working for the magazine at the time!
Also I remember seeing him host Saturday Night Live.. oh my god, his monologue was embarrasing, with him trying to be funny and breaking into song! Plus seeing him on Conan O' Brien and Leno acting all hyper and crazy was creepy to me at least! lol..

Anyhoo, I'm glad he didn't get to direct Casino Royale for the fact that I believe it would have turned out to be very Tarantino like, despite his claims that he wouldn't screw up the series.

Okay rant over.. thanks for putting up with me! lol
