How many similaritys can you spot between Goldeneye and Casino Royale?

here is a few...
  • Bond only beds one girl
  • Actors First movie
  • First Bond movies directed by Campbell over a period of time (LTK - GE (6 years) DAD - CR (4 years))
  • Bond dosent use any deadly gadgets on his car.
  • Bond only introduces himself as Bond... James Bond once in the movie
  • Bond loses something very precious (GE - his friend, CR - Vesper and almost his genitalia. :cooltongue:

- Driving through a wall with a big vechile. The surprise moment. (Tanker in GE / Tractor in CR).
- M talks about the "cold war".
- In both movies, it takes some time until 007 finally meet the main Bondgirl.
- A character can tell something about another character's history by simply looking at his/her watch. In both films, this happens in the first scene between Bond and the main girl (Severnya/Military Background).
- Modern technology takes a central part in the movie compared to other Bondfilms.

* Martin Campell has a Cameo in both films:
- As a cyclist in GoldenEye.
- As the tanker driver/refueller(?) whose neck carlos breaks.

Is that really him? I tried to see if it was after someone mentioned this in another thread a few months ago, and I wasn't sure.

- Very little use of The James Bond Theme.

- Pursuit/fight sequence atop very high and precarious territory.

- M refers to the Cold War.

- Bond wearing only swimming trunks in one scene.

- Tracking shot in CR of embassy guards running away from camera towards Bond recalls tracking shot in GOLDENEYE of Russian fighter pilots running away from camera towards their jets.

Goldeneye: Bond is surrounded by Russian troops with guns trained on him, in the chemical weapons facility (006 held at gunpoint)
Casino Royale: Bond in the embassy surrounded with troops with guns trained on him (Mollaka held at gun point)

I don't think it is. Nearly every single time I've seen CASINO ROYALE I've paid close attention to that guy and I must say it doesn't look like Martin Campbell at all -- well, except for the shaved head.

My note is that the one person Bond belives to be his friend and closest ally, turns about to be the one who stabs him in the back, mostly at a bitter loss and a sour end ie Vesper/Trevelyan.

here is a few...
Bond only beds one girl

Bond beds 2 women in GE - Caroline, the woman sent out to evaluate him, and Natalya.

One more similarity:
GE's Bond follows Natalya into a casino.
CR's Bond spends almost half of the movie in the casino.

Now how many similarities do you find between CR and The Sex Thief (1973) also directed by Campbell?

I have an easier time believing Bond had a quickie with Solange than believing he went anywhere past first base with Caroline. With no evidence for either beyond our own imaginations, the point stands.

The other odd thing with both these movies is there appear to be two different M characters, and yet both are played by the same actress. It's possible to imagine TND, TWINE, or DAD as happening after CR or QoS, but GoldenEye really throws a monkey wrench into the whole M-Bond history.

Yes, that's what makes CR (and QOS) impossible as a prequel, but still could be seen as a retcon, depending what direction adopts the EON series in the future.

Well, technically speaking, he doesn't bed Caroline, he cars her... :)

I think it's two different people. First it is Campbell, but the person lying dead on the ground is someone else.

No, it's NOT him.
a) it doesn't even really look like him
and
b ) he told me, amused, it wasn't him.

I was going to point out that neither MGW or Campbell mention it in the audio commentary for CASINO ROYALE therefore it can't be him, but ACE's reply is far more conclusive! Case closed.

Yup, no mention made of it there.
Also, the DP told me, amused, it wasn't Campbell.
They seemed surprised anyone ever thought it was!

Back on topic,
1 The first, lingering profile shot of the Aston Martin is similar to the Ford Mondeo shot. The advertiser's angle, if you will.
2 The Nambutu Embassey shootout feels similar to the Goldeneye Archive shootout.
3 Bond crashing through barriers, surprisingly, amusingly as a character beat: tank through wall, Bond through plasterwall.
4 Both movies make use of the inherent structure of a Bond film. Both pretitle sequences are set at some period before the body of the film and the main titles are used to poetically convey time progressing (the only times - with Dr No and Die Another Day - that the titles have a narrative function in Bond).

After an initially stormy meeting with M,during which she makes it quite clear that he's another dispensable agent
GE "I've no compunction about sending you to your death"
CR" These bastards are after your head and I'm seriously considering giving it to them"

she manages to get the last word by issuing a final statement that also breaks the ice..

GE "..and Bond?..Come back alive...."

CR "and Bond?...Don't ever break into my house again"

We barely get to know the Obligatory Sacrificial Lambs in both films (Mishkin in GE, Solange in CR) before they are killed off in the storyline.

Locations:
GE: Monaco
CR: Montenegro

Both are beautiful but small (or tiny in the case of Monaco) European countries and they happen to start with the same three letters. And in both countries he visits a casino and has an Aston Martin outside.

Actually I think TWINE is the only movie where Bond introduces himself that way more than once.

I think she needed more persuasion than a kiss. He also had sex with both Gypsy girls in FRWL, I can assure you.
