Now on the CBn main page...

*Minor Plot Spoilers*

Don't know if this news has been posted already, I wasn't at home for a week.
I read on an italian newspaper "Il Giornale", an interview with Giancarlo Giannini, and he gave some hints on Bond 22.
He has already signed for it. so we will see him on the new bond film.
Next I'm going to write could be a spoiler for the next bond...
He said his charachter (Mathis) is a good man, just like M explain to Bond on the phone at the end of Casino Royale, and on the next one he will show it.
His double face portrayal will be the vehicle to reach to the top of the organization.
That's all he said

Nice. I liked both the character and the actor so he should defintivly return for another film.

I'm not quite sure what the "double face portrayal will be the vehicle to reach to the top of the organization" is all about...

Sounds like Mathis is undercover ("double" agent) with the terrorist organization? Anyway, I'm glad he's coming back, hopefully Jeffrey Wright is signed on too.

That is awesome news. We can have a truly memorable ally re-occur for some follow up films.

Mathis was one of my favourite characters in the film, and Giancarlo played him with coolness.

It would be an excellent idea if true, using his double cover to reach the top of the organisation and proving his trust to Bond. A good twist on the great character of Fleming.

Glad to see that he's returning, and great to see more evidence that CASINO ROYALE and BOND 22 will be closely tied together.

Great news! Mathis might be my favorite ally of the whole series. Giannini played him perfectly.

2 questions though:
1) If he's a double trying to reach the top of the organization, did he help Le Chiffre significantly in Casino Royale? I mean, was Bond right in suspecting he helped in Vesper's capture and he told Le Chiffre that Bond knew "his tell"? Or did he not really do that much for Le Chiffre?

2) Does this mean that the meeting to discuss Bond 2.2 planned for January has already happened? Maybe they worked out some plans (like finalizing the plot, working on the script) and that's when they signed Giannini for the movie.

Now this is good news! Mathis was a great old-school Bond compadre in the vein of Kerim Bey, Draco, and Columbo. Something very warm about these sort of allies. Also interesting how much a continuation this next bond will be, very much the Blofeld trilogy of the Bond films. Sad that he probably won't make it through this Casino Royale Saga alive :cooltongue:

Giannini was the most charismatic actor in the whole film. Hell, based on his charm alone, HE could have made a better Bond than Craig.

You sense that right brother! And this is coming from someone who read the novel and saw the film in theaters (OO)7 times, so I am not just a biased basher.

No, I suppose not.

Everything else! :cooltongue:

It's like watching OHMSS. OHMSS is a great film with a strong story, terrific supporting cast, attractive photography, and a great musical score from John Barry. Just because I find Lazenby a weak leading man doesn't mean I can't have it in my top ten. I didn't care for Craig, yet CR is high in my top five list.

Craig was alright for what he was, I just didn't find him to be the "second coming of Connery" like so many other fans did. There were also at least half a dozen known actors who could have done an equal if not, better job, than DC who look more like James Bond.

Wouldnt it be cool if Mathis, deep undercover in the organisation became a sort of right hand man to the Algerian. In a way he becomes the main "henchman".

He could be faced with choices that could kill Bond and others, but could blow his cover if he didn

Good stuff.

Though MATHIS should now be handed some decent dialogue. Wooden exposition did not help his case in CASINO ROYALE and was one of the very few pitfalls of the screenplay (that and failing to use FELIX LEITER as adroitly and cleverly as he was in the book).

The novel has MATHIS as a good character so it makes sense he is exactly that in the film. I welcome his return - as long as he has more involvement in the narrative. Though BOND knew he was innocent all along, but that it was safer just to have him 'taken away'.

Maybe he can explain exactly why 'M' trained VESPER's Algerian boyfriend and knows who he is....?

Thanks for your post pieffra.
This is great news.
Great that GC is returning (very charismatic and already one of Bond's best allies) and that the character is true to Fleming's interpretation.

Good news. Liked the character, and liked the unique relationship it added to the Craig-Bond. And if the ubiquitous CIA Agent Wade didn't have to "terminate" in any given film, I don't see why Mathis' days would have to be numbered. In any case, I would hope from what I have seen of him so far that they are not.

Believe me, I hope they don't kill Mathis as well. It's just normal scripting conventions that have me thinking on that line. Right now, the Bond field team(meaning exposed to danger) for the next movie looks like Bond, Felix, and Mathis. Seems like too many people to keep around for the whole movie. Most screenwriters would kill one off along the way to give the tragic spin and make you hate the bad guy more. They're not going to kill Leiter and they're definitely not going to kill Bond, so that leaves us with Mathis.

Also, it seems to fit in with Mathis's character arc. As GC said about his character, Mathis is a good man. Bond obviously doesn't think so at the end of CR, so Mathis will likely spend the most of the next movie trying to convince Bond that he really was on the good side, and that he can trust him. If he were to die in the course of helping Bond out, it would be the ultimate gesture of goodness. That and it could also give Bond some more emotional baggage about how he never trusted this guy until he was about to die.

That would be my 2 cents on it anyway.

Maathis could haave a leg and an arm eaten by a sshark in 22. Richard Kiel can play the sshark.
