Well, about that one. It came to me the moment I heard it - when an embassy employee sounds the alarm its the same claxon as in early Connery 'Bonds' like "Dr NO". I don't know exactly what kind of machine makes that sound but it sure is rare...

Similarly mr Bond is playing cards while waiting for M in her appartament just like Connery did waiting for dr Dent :P

On the other hand that may just be accidental :) Judge for yourselves

You guys are seriously reading more into this movie than you should. It's not a Goldfinger reference and no matter how much you want it to be, the Vesper/Bond sequence had nothing to do with Miss Moneypenny.

I didn't see anything that happened as a nod to other Bond films in particular. And I can't still see why the words money and penny, in a conversation with a Treasurey Agent about money are making people think about M's secretary. It was totally out of context and location. A better 'nod' to her would be from M, or Viellers (sp) or at least in MI6 even, not on a Eurostar train out of the country.

I don't see the 'Money' 'Penny' line in the conversation with Vesper as a reference to Miss Moneypenny. But What I did (indirectly) saw as a more subtle reference to Miss MoneyPenny was how Bond found out where M lives and what her real name is or how he found out her secure password to log in to the MI6 computer.

"How the hell does he know these things?" How indeed....

Bond is probably sleeping with M secretary. The guy who phones her. That's stuff to chew for CNB haters !

Surely you cant mean that you dont think anything was a reference to past Bond films? You dont think that someone who looks a lot like Goldfinger, sounds like Goldfinger, wears Goldfinger type clothing and drives a gold coloured car was just coincidence? Same with the "Stephanie Broadchest" thing, I'd call that a pretty obvious reference to Pussy Galore, Holly Goodhead and co. And the line at the end was of course referencing the other movies. As with the silver Astin Martin DB5, a very obvious reference.

I would add the scene with Bond and Vesper in the elevator and his pulling the gun out reminded me of a similar scene with Bond and Pam in Licence to Kill.

Well, when you have people asking questions like, "Was Vesper really Moneypenny?" then I think it's pretty likely that it was intended by the writers to be a nod to that character. I can't imagine creating that piece of dialogue for any other reason; if it had been intended solely as Vesper announcing herself as the treasury agent, and Bond commenting on Vesper's beauty (or, as someone else has pointed out, a recognition code created by MI6 and the Treasury), then it could have been written a thousand different ways without using the words "money" and "penny." And I agree with others that there are little bits throughout the movie intended to pay homage to past films. Does it matter whether we all get that or not, or even care? Of course not. The beauty of this film is that a lot of this stuff is open to interpretation. If people want to go looking, then I hardly see the harm in finding these references.

The "money" and "penny" reference in the Bond/Vesper conversation seemed very much like an in-joke regarding Moneypenny to me. Like the "Stephanie Broadchest" comment.

I'm in the coincidence camp. When the producers and writers want to reference other Bond films they're much more heavy handed-see OHMSS desk cleaning scene. I know that that was different writers/director but still... This is a prequel. We see Bond getting his first Aston Martin. Bond is a card player so he's playing cards to kill time-hardly shocking. "Do I give a damn" is playing with our Bond expectations on martinis but its' because we all know from previous movies, all the books and this movie earlier when he takes great pains to order the Vesper just so that he does give a damn. I never gave "every penny of it" a thought except as a great and appropriate line. Maybe it was an in-joke but I'm not convinced. I don't think the guy looks that much like Auric Goldfinger who, as I recall drove a gold rolls, not a Land Rover. Now, if the guy had a Korean manservant with a flying derby, maybe. The danger of DVDs is we all think to hard (says the guy who decided to play out the poker hands to see if they made sense).

The danger of DVDs is we all think to hard. . . .

Except that both my husband and I (he being a longtime Bond fan, I being a recent inductee) caught the "Moneypenny" reference on first viewing in the theatre. So we really didn't think about it all that hard; it just caught our attention.

This point has been debated ever since the movie was released, and I'm of the opinion that it was an "intentional coincidence" (if such a thing can exist...) - the writers knew that the proximity of the words "money" and "penny" would make the viewer think of Moneypenny, so it was left in the script. Certainly no harm in doing so, in my opinion.
