LOL, I actually remember that 1990 showing of Moonraker. How bizarre.

Especially as I believe it was up against the British network premiere of ET. It never stood a chance.

Does anyone know why ET took 8 years to reach British TV, while all other Hollywood blockbusters took only 3 years?

Because Spielberg didn't want it to be shown until then.

That screening was actually the world television premiere of E.T.

Wow, really? Even before the USA? I think it came out on video in 1988? I had seen it on video at some point between 1982 and 1990.

Yeah, Spielberg wanted it to be shown here first, for some reason.

Maybe it was because the movie had a large British crew, like the Star Wars and Bond movies?

Excellent! Nice to see an old red postbox next to it too.

No, that one didn't. It was shot in California.

It was probably just because we always have (or, used to have, at any rate), a big Christmas Day film on the telly. Makes it more of an event, I suppose.

Yeah, I used to love Christmas Day TV. I would get the Radio Times and TV Times (when you had to buy both to see what was on) and see what was going to be on over Christmas!!!

ET was one of the classic 1980's film rife for pirating. Keeping it away from the home market (even TV) kept it that way for a few years. Now the BBC seem to show it every two months...including the awful "let's take the guns away from the cops chasing the kids" notion that is the Special Edition...

1980 - TMWTGG

I remember the Christmas 1980 TV Times cover well, that celebrated the first TV screening of The Man with the Golden Gun.

In those days The TV Times was the official listings mag for ITV and only carried listings for that one channel. Can you imagine such a thing?

They had a specially commissioned photo with Janet Brown dressed as Margaret Thatcher (She would play her shortly afterwards in For Your Eyes Only). She was being pushed along on a sledge by Roger Moore. (looking a lot older than he does in The Man With the Golden Gun, before his For Your Eyes Only facelift or perhaps he was just out of puff).

Morecombe and Wise (who I believe had recently defected to ITV from the BBC at the time) were throwing snowballs at them.

Fantastic stuff.

I hope ITV have some variation this year. Like maybe showing On Her Majesty’s Secret Service or The Living Daylights, Please! I hate it when they keep showing Brosnans. :/

Yeah, good days.. on a brief note I do miss the days when ITV cut to a commercial break whilst showing a movie they'd have the movie posters for all and any movies they screened. Watching Bond Movies on telly the first time I saw the original posters for these films was at either sides of the breaks. Talk about something I'd love them to bring back!

That's true. I loved that as well. Other times, they'd make their own posters of clips from the movie.

And I remember once that Moonraker was represented simply by the close-up shot of Jaws biting the cable of the cable cars in Rio!

Yeah it got you more excited for a film premiere back in those days.

Yay, the tradition continues! Moonraker is a great one for sitting on the sofa on Boxing Day (26th December for our American friends).
