One of the main things people do on Christmas Day in Britain, is sit down and watch TV. That famed slot, just after the Queen's speech used to be a real battleground in the 80's. And although the BBC would usually win with its big premiere, ITV tended to go for a Bond film, bless 'em!!!

So here is the list, Bond film by Bond film and the years they appeared on Christmas Day telly!

1978 - DAF

1979 - Goldfinger

1980 - TMWTGG

1981 - Dr No

1984 - TMWTGG

1985 - Moonraker

1986 - NSNA

1990 - Moonraker

1991 - FYEO

2000 - Octopussy

2002 - Thunderball

I find NSNA and OP weird selections for christmas day movies.
I would have thought DAF or OHMSS would be shown more often.

Ahh yeah remember watching OCTOPUSSY; had no idea it was six years ago though. Shame there's not one on this year. There is a fairly decent selection of other movies though.

Yes, I remember seeing Octopussy briefly in 2000, when I was visiting my Grandma in hospital on Christmas Day.

Also should also note that New Year's Day 2004 featured DAF.

Yeah, OHMSS is the perfect Bond film for Christmas.

But ITV would never have dared show it, as to them, it featured the "unknown" Bond, Lazenby.

Yeah, US TV stations seem to give it the shaft as well.

Though it does have a very huge christmas element to it with alot of the sequences taking place in snow and the story even taking place around christmas but don't you think it features too much of a downer ending to be represented as the christmas bond film?

True, and it seems ITV always went for the more visual Bond films, since people would be eating, drinking or talking, while watching and so went for the more light-hearted Bonds like TMWTGG, Moonraker and Octopussy.

It's not just Christmas over there though. I remember growing up in the UK and one thing was certain, a Bond movie would be shown on television on a Bank Holiday.

I remember there was actual comment from people when a Bank Holiday came along that broke with that tradition.

LOL, that is true!!! :)

I also remember during the build-up to the premiere of DAD, British TV showed 2 Bond documentaries - one presented by Roger Moore, the other with Michael Parkinson, plus Bond Girls are Forever - with Maryam D'Abo, and at least 3 Bond movies in the weeks up to November 2002.

Not even on Boxing Day or New Year's Day?

You would think they would this year, especially with all the publicity and hype surrounding the success of Casino Royale.

Australian TV is showing the 1967 spoof of CR this Saturday night.

I agree OHMSS is the perfect Xmas Bond film, but what Bond film do you like to watch at Xmas?
How about this year?
I may go for TSWLM.

BTW I remember OHMSS being on ITV Xmas Day or Boxing Day one year. I remember taping it because it was longer than the VHS release! It had the safecracking scene.

Nope, afraid not. Nothing over the entire Christmas period. I found this to be particularly surprising due to the success of CASINO ROYALE, but I guess scheduling has forced it out. ITV are trying to be a bit different these days anyway. Mainly means that they show a lot of crap presented by Ant and Dec. Makes me glad that I don't have a TV in termtime, all my entertainment comes from DVDs and YouTube.

I remember the Xmas showing of Goldfinger.

'They' managed to whittle it all down to an hour and a half - including the advertising breaks.

(And it was crap - in the most polite and appropriate way)

The Pay-TV (cable) channel that owns the rights to the Bond films in Australia - Movie Greats - showed On Her Majesty's Secret Service in the afternoon this Christmas Day.

It appears someone there had their thinking cap on.

Cheers.

Well, not quite- I did watch Licence To Kill when it was on ITV4 last week. There may have been more- I wasn't keeping an eye on the schedules.

There was nothing on terrestiral. There were a few Bond films on, but they were all on either ITV2 or 4 I think. I know that The Living Daylights played on Wednesday 21st.

Casino Royale is showing on Sky Premiere on British TV on Christmas Day, just a little over a year after it hit British cinemas.
