I really like Daniel Craig. Before CR was released I was a bit skeptical because he didn't look like Bond; he's shorter, has blond hair, blue eyes, and doesn't have any chest hair. But CR was amazing and I got used to Craig's new Bond really quickly. After QoS I like him even more so I really approve of him being Bond, but I think two films is a little too early for me to declare whether or not he's the best Bond.

Whatever anyone has to say about Craig (so far beyond my comprehension why it’d be anything but positive… but I digress) I think when fans look back on the Craig Era™ 20-30 years from now, if for nothing else he will be universally respected for getting in there and choppin’ it up like a man. For truly giving up his body for Bond, 110%.

Of course. I just mean to say that I do think his physical committment is what separates him entirely from the other Bond actors and surpasses any bar set thus far. It's what he can call his own.

Not that he doesn't succeed or even excel in other areas as well.

I have to admit that Connery is my all time favorite, but Craig is at a very close second.

This guy is only 37 and he looks like Bond's dad. Nothing like that image to interest that fickle young audience they want to capture.

He isn't bad, but certainly, not an worthy candidate when comparing with Brosnan. He's a great actor, but I hope he recieives any other role in CR other than Bond.

I just noticed that, too - hopefully it will change to "Pierce Brosnan re-signs as 007" by the end of the day.

Charisma? You kidding? Craig looks like he's gone five rounds with Mike Tyson. Sure he may be a great actor, but he definitely doesn't have the Bond look.

Indeed. I was flicking through old threads from April 2005 yesterday and I came across that exact quote. It was interesting and funny to read the comments about Daniel long before he was announced as 007. The Sun rumour ended up being true, too.

Craig is a fantastic James Bond, and I certainly approve, but no one will ever top Sean Connery.

Actually I doubt he'll ever top Timothy Dalton...

Don't feel like you're betraying your old favorite if you feel torn about promoting Daniel Craig from "second-only-to-Sean" to #1. The one person who would be the first to 'crown' Daniel as the best Bond ever, etc, would be...Sean Connery. If it would get the masses off his back he would personally mail Daniel the mantle. He might even pay the postage, just to be rid of the thing.

It was the lack of depth to the character (and lack of a partnership with EON) that drove Sean away. Roger didn't care - he just took the money and delivered the goods. It took Timothy Dalton to raise the bar of expectations, a feat many say Pierce Brosnan failed to match.

We finally have movies written for an actor, and an actor to match in the role. Let's enjoy these days - they may not last. They're bound to write a YOLT/Moonraker/DAD for Daniel before his tenure is over.

They might write it, but he won´t play it. I highly doubt, they will have the nerve to put crap under his nose, also I feel, they are too high on at least trying to get something decent on screen to mess it up big time.

I completely disagree on the "not getting to act": yours is the view of Pierce Brosnan, who says that since leaving Bond he is now free to act. But I don't see how playing Bond isn't acting. Granted, it's no Shakespeare's Richard III, but it is nevertheless a character's performance. Why do you think different people have different views on different Bonds? Precisely because each actor's characterization of James Bond is different. That, to me, is acting. Playing James Bond in TLD is acting. Playing James Bond in TSWLM is acting.

As regards the "movie written for an actor", I also disagree: can you seriously argue that FRWL, for instance, is a poorly written movie?

I would not presume to assign best or worse, and I do still enjoy his films but I have to say his is my least favourite portrayal of the eon series Bond to date.

Just a thought, since things are so quiet now, is there a way to do a poll where you can rank the Bonds? Would be curious to see how CBn members would rank them, now that Craig has had two out, and both are mature, with nothing coming in the immediate future. If a ranking poll isn't possible (where you could put them in order of preference), then a straight 'who's your favourite' poll.

I like Daniel Craig a lot actually. He really embraces Bond and he just has that look of James Bond lol

Totally unsuitable. The look is all wrong, I've said many times he would have been fine as Le Chiffre's craggy faced hired help, or Felix Leiter (post sharkbite), but that height and attractiveness are so far off from Bond that I've spent most of the last decade thinking I've slipped into an alternate reality a la that TWILIGHT ZONE where everybody has pig faces except for two normal-pretty 'freaks.' It's funny that people all of a sudden seem to think he looks old, because he ALWAYS looked old -- and ugly. To me he even messes up the sexuality aspect -- look at the 'please pick me' expression when he is trying to get Solange into the car in CR, and you'll see pretty much everything is wrong there. It is like the old TJ HOOKER where Shatner is trying to get Lisa Hartman to go out with him -- except Shatner seems more charming. 

 

Acting-wise I've been even more disappointed, as I find his choices to be very wrong nearly all the time (surprising, since I thought he was a pretty solid actor in the past), and with the amount of influence he seems to have on the franchise, which increases exponentially, I hold him at least as responsible as Babs for getting the films to the point where now I can't imagine ever watched a new one -- I think SKYFALL is wrongheaded as well as stupid, which is what I also said about CR, but now rather than just going on rages about it, I'm just settling in with the idea that Bond is over for me in terms of new experiences.

 

I probably should have realized that when Dalton didn't come back, but I was still optimistic back then, having survived the agony of the Moore films (largely on the basis of still having John Barry, along with frequent doses of Derek Meddings and Ken Adam, to make up for the storylines and lack of character.) But shoot, I got the magic of Connery and the dead-on interp by Dalton, plus I got TAILOR OF PANAMA, which showed that Broz could have done Bond right with the proper director. And the Fleming books and the Pearson 'bio of 007' aren't going away, plus I have a pretty nice old Super-8 parody I did in high school (which anticipated SKYFALL's word association test by 37 years, and even managed to include Sir James Moloney, who SHOULD have featured in this last film.) So overall its a win, but for me Bond is dead, largely due to Craig.
