I got season 5 as a Christmas present. One thing I've noticed are episodes I haven't seen in syndication in recent years. In the late '90s, 175 episodes were digitally remastered, which still left more than 100 episodes that weren't.
Mike Quigley's site had a list of the Paramount syndication package, if you're interested in what was left out. I noticed that it was updated in July, 2005. Anyway, with the DVD releases, it's comforting to know I can now enjoy "Chain of Events" anytime I wish!

I just had to laugh at McGarrett's pimp/1970s interior decorator outfit when he was "sweating out" his appeal after his conviction for second-degree murder! Jail not good enough for him? Ha! He gets to live (under house arrest, I guess) in a great pad by the beach while dressed in the ugliest clothes available. LOL!

In 1996, at the Five-O convention in Los Angeles, the original cast (minus JL) were hanging around with fans. At one point, there was this exchange:
FAN: Who selected Jack Lord's clothes? (I forget the precise wording but the context of the question concerned McG's "off-duty" wardrobe).
JAMES MACARTHUR: Jack selected his own clothes.
There were several episodes where McG displayed interesting "off-duty" clothing choices, including "Full Fathom Five" in season 1, "The Ransom" in season 3 and fourth-season opener).

He also wears a wide, zebra-stripe shirt in S11's "Skyline Killer." And let's not forget the navy blue leisure suit from this same period.
In the Vashon scene, I had to rewind to hear what Jack was saying because I was so aghast at his clothes! Oh,and that wide-brimmed hat with the teeth for a hat band!

NEW YORK–Harry Endo, the actor who played a forensic scientist on the long-running TV show Hawaii Five-0, has died at the age of 87.
Family members say he suffered a stroke and died at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital on Friday afternoon.
Endo played the character "Che Fong" on the popular show. He was one of the original cast members on the crime drama that began in 1968.
Daughter Leslie Baker says her father was born in Colorado but spent much of life in Hawaii, where he worked for a bank. While doing a commercial for the bank, he was approached to play the role of Fong.
After the show ended in 1980, he played a couple of small parts on Magnum P.I. He retired from show business in the late 80s.

Can't wait. As I've no doubt mentioned here before, seasons 6-10 are completely unknown to me, as either the local station didn't get that far in syndication or my interest wandered and picked up back during season 11. It'll be a brand-new experience for me, unless there actually were eps from this period I've seen, but don't remember.
But enough about me; today's my fifth anniversary at CBn...
Season 6 is a very good season, the last supervised by creator Leonard Freeman. Very good season opener (Morton Stevens may have won an Emmy for his score). No Wo Fat, though, in that season.

"This episode is largely a remake of '... And I Want Some Candy and a Gun That Shoots ...' which aired the previous season. The former episode was all too obviously based on the 1966 sniper massacre at the University of Texas in Austin, and the network declined to rebroadcast it because of its violence and the possibility it would encourage imitative behavior. So Leonard Freeman, writing his last episode, changed the motive for the sniper into distracting the cops from another crime (the kidnapping) and had his editors use as much footage from the earlier show as possible. Six years later, NBC used the same technique when it acquired the theatrical film "Two Minute Warning," filming an hour of extra footage about art thieves hiring the sniper to distract attention from a museum robbery (the film bombed)."

Funny you should mention the 30th anniversary of Jonestown, which was last year. I remember when it happened but since I was a kid at the time I didn't know the full story. There were 3 documentaries about it on PBS, MSNBC, and CNN, each containing interviews and information that the other one didn't. Watching all 3 painted a pretty complete picture. Fascinating stuff.

So I've just watched "Little Girl Blue" and, due to the re-use of much footage from Season 5's "... And I Want Some Candy and a Gun That Shoots ...", it has to be the weakest episode of H 5-0 I've seen so far. I wondered why they would re-use so much footage from that episode so I looked around. This is what was written about the subject in the IMDB...

At the 1996 Five-O convention that I attended in Los Angeles, Ron Feinberg (the guest star) described how the episode originated. Feinberg had played a "developmentally challenged" character back in season 1. He was summoned by executive producer Leonard Freeman to see if he'd be interested in the season 5 episode. I forget the details but Feinberg was told the story would largely re-use scenes of the season 4 episode described above.
Regard the season 1 episode with Feinberg (Pray Love Remember, Pray Love Remember), the actor described a meeting he had with Freeman. The producer said something to the effect he did not want "Lenny from 'Of Mice And Men.'" Feinberg said that was exactly what was called for -- just not the Lon Chaney Jr. version from the movie. Feinberg left the meeting and Freeman followed him. The producer told the actor that he was right and he should play the character as he saw fit.
As it turned out, Freeman plotted both episodes in question.

Wow! That's a good find, Mr. Solo! Hard to believe that almost twenty years later he would finally get his big break on H50. The guy seems ageless. I've really enjoyed his work as Ben and he was a worthy replacement for Kono...too bad Jack Lord didn't think so! What did he have against the Polynesian "bruddahs" on the show, anyway?
On the season 1 Five-O set, there's a copy of a 1996 TV special that aired on Hawaiian television. In it, Harrington says that Jack Lord didn't like the fact that Al was taller. As Harrington tells the anecdote, he expressed concern to Leonard Freeman. The creator/executive producer replies not to worry -- he (Freeman) made the hire and he'll stand behind.
Problem: Freeman dies in early 1974, after production has wrapped on season 6. Harrington says in the special he knew his days were numbered. And, indeed, Harrington gets phased out during season 7.
While it doesn't happen right away, the much shorter Duke (Herman Wedemeyer) gets hired by Five-O from HPD.

Nice try. I do hope that pilot is included in the final season release as an extra. Even before his motorcycle accident I can't see Gary Busey as the head of 5-0.The main titles of the never-shown 1997 Five-O pilot have surfaced on YouTube.
LOL@"the four of us"Thanks for that. Thank goodness that pilot never sold.

I was just scrolling through this thread (which I started in Nov, 2006) and it's primary participants have really only been Napoleon Solo, you, and I with Blofeld's Cat coming in until he announced he wasn't going to buy any more season sets after the first one! So it's really just the three of us! I'll bet that if a remake is announced, that thread would be slammed by many who don't even give this thread a first look. Same goes for the M:I thread; the original as opposed to the Tom Cruise movies--two totally different audiences, I guess.

I must admit that while I have not posted in here for a while (for the reason detailed above) I still come in every time there's a new post. Which suggests that my defenses might be breaking down and I just might buy a few more boxsets.
