CBS rides with 'Hawaii Five-O'
Network gives pilot order to modern retelling of drama
By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER
Book 'em, CBS: Net has given a pilot order to its new take on "Hawaii Five-O."
Peter Lenkov is writing and exec producing a modern retelling of the classic 1970s crime drama. Also on board as exec producers ate Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
CBS TV Studios produces the project, which once again revolves around Steve McGarrett, the head of an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police.
Pickup was expected, as CBS gave a pilot-sized committment to "Hawaii Five-O" last fall (Daily Variety, Oct. 9).
The original "Five-O," which starred Jack Lord in the iconic McGarrett role, is also known for its catchy instrumental theme song -- popularized by the Ventures -- and the famous catchphrase "Book 'em, Danno."
Eye has been trying for several years to revive the franchise, which originally ran for 12 seasons on CBS, between 1968 and 1980. The network took a stab last year with Ed Bernero, who's no longer involved.
Original series was created by Leonard Freeman and filmed on location in Hawaii.
Hawaii Five-O" reps part of another round of 1970s-era nostalgia at the nets. NBC is shooting a pilot based on another crime drama from that time period, "The Rockford Files."

I'll believe it when I see it. Remember, CBS spent $2 million on a pilot in 1997 that was never broadcast.

This O'Laughlin guy looks too soft to play McGarrett. We'll see.
I kind of agree but I have never seen him in anything
Wasn't his name bantered around a bit for Casino Royale, or am I thinking of someone else?
I tell you, I'm kinda looking forward to a modern take on the theme song, one of the bet TV themes of all time.

No, you are correct. He was one of the finalists to become James Bond #6.This O'Laughlin guy looks too soft to play McGarrett. We'll see.

So remakes are now coming to television with Hawaii Five-O and The Rockford Files--two great classic shows. Apparently, Hollywood writers have run out of original ideas.

For a little perspective:
http://hmssweblog.wo...ould-have-been/
Being the reactionary curmudgeon that I am (thus the "elder" Connery avatar) I'll stay miles away from the remake but if it's popular enough and that guarantees the remainder of the original series' 12 seasons gets a DVD release, that'll be fine.
And maybe we could finally get some Steve McGarrett avatars around here (both the original and the new kid).
And a Reminder: Five-O's eighth season DVD is out March 16.

So what does everyone think of the cast that's shaping up? So far Alex O'Laughlin (The Shield, Moonlight) has been cast as McGarrett, and Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Angel) as Chin Ho. The only thing I ever saw O'Laughlin on was The Shield, but he was good and I can maybe see him in the role. I love Kim, and I could actually see HIM as more of a Jack Lord type. He's certainly got the requisite intensity.
I agree. Kim could easily be the lead in this new remake.

Both remakes sound like they will be terrible.
I don't know if they are still using the son of McGarrett but, if they are, I would cast Dean Cain. He could pass for 1/2 Hawaiian.
What has Paris Carver aka Teri Hatcher's former co-star been doing since his Superman days? I know he hosted a Ripley's Believe It Or Not show.

I think that happened a long time ago.

Agreed. I'm a reactionary curmudgeon also. Also, part of H 5-0's appeal for me is its 1970s time capsule aspect. It won't be the same without the Fords, the 1970s definition of hi-tech and non-PC aspects like Danno smoking indoors like he did in the pilot.
And maybe we could finally get some Steve McGarrett avatars around here (both the original and the new kid).
That would be nice.

Just finished watching "3 Dead Cows from Makapuu" and, towards the end of the 2nd part of the two part episode, this surfer is reading a Matt Helm novel. The cover was torn off but was recognizable from the back cover, which has a shot of Dean Martin in "The Silencers".
Good eye, TheSaint!

I just watched that 2 parter today and went back and zoomed in on the paperback. You are right, itis indeed a shot of Dino and Stella Stevens from the classic 1966 spy spoof. I've finally finished all of season 2 and it only took me a little over two years. Now, I'm ready for season 3 and am so pleased that the next 6 seasons are already available. At the rate I'm going by the time I've finished season 8, all 12 seasons will be released.

He's kept busy-a short lived tv series after Ripley's, various tv-movies. Obviously Teri's post-Lois & Clark, post-TND career has been more successful thanks to Desperate Housewives.

Five-O's ninth season is apparently due out August 3, 2010 according to the usually-reliable Hawaii Five-O Home Page. For those who like spies, the season opener is Nine Dragons, widely considered one of the series' best episodes. McGarrett is brainwashed by arch-nemesis Wo Fat.
It is perhaps the most Bond-like Five-O episode. It gives you a taste of what it'd be like if Eon did a movie based on Raymond Benson's Zero Minus Ten. It's not perfect but is definitely one of the highlights of the series. And the cast includes the guy who played Chula in The Man With The Golden Gun.

Can't wait to see it! So far, the most Bond-like episodes are the Wo Fat shows, especially the pilot episode, "Cocoon", proof enough that Five-O was no mere "cop show" from the very start! There's also some Mission: Impossible-type spy chicanery in S4's "The Ninety-Second War", another Wo Fat story, this one even has a McGarrett double...

I've been a "follower" of your blog as well as Brisco/Tanner's "Double O Section" site. I particularly liked your OHMSS "what if" and McGarrett-Wo Fat pieces. Have you considered expanding the latter? With the DVDs out, I'll bet you could add considerable information to your synopses.

Well, CBS did it. The new Five-O is on the schedule. Two characters get gender changes.
I hope that they chose a 300lb Hawaiian actress to play this new, female Kono.
Sheesh, you'd think that after fifty years of statehood the governor and head of Five-O would be Hawaiians. Guess they still need the "Great White Daddy" to "take care of things."

And keep in mind that Jack Lord was 48 when the original Five-O began, whereas Alex O'Loughlin is in his 30s...gotta snag that 18-35 advertising demographic...

I know you'll be shocked, SHOCKED, to hear this but Grace Park, the new Kono, ain't 300 pounds:

She barely looks 300 ounces!
But in all seriousness, I hope the new show and the new boy do the old show proud. Maybe it'll even be as fondly remembered as the classic original.
BTW, did you see that Jimmy Kimmel interview with O'Loughlin? Kimmel says: "You're in the new Five-O; you play Jack Lord."
Not "you play Steve McGarrett", but Jack Lord. Proof enough that Jack Lord IS Steve McGarrett!!!

LOL....That's pretty good.
Checking the IMDB summary of the pilot, which admittedly is not much to go on, there appears to be at least some attention to detail. I see there's a character named Mary Ann McGarrett. Presumably that's McG's sister (who was married and named Mary Ann Whalen in the first season two-parter of the original series) because O'Loughlin clearly isn't old enough to have a grown daughter. And they kept Jameson as the last name of the governor (although I'd have preferrred a Hawaiian or Asian-American as governor, to reflect the reality of the state).
The IMDB summary doesn't list a Dan Williams, though. Perhaps that's Caan's role?

And I'll watch Grace Park in anything. She was particularly tempting in an episode of Human Target this year, besides I have a fatal soft spot for Asian women.
But they need a big Hawaiian warrior type, even if 300lbs isn't in vogue nowadays. I always like the part of the opening credits where Kono burst through that gate in freeze frame, his sheer size and the fact that he was moving so fast was awe inspiring.
Tangentially, I was watching an episode ( against my better judgment, cause I'm not a David Caruso fan) of CSI Miami, and I realized that his one note performance is a weak attempt to be Jack Lord.

Daniel Dae Kim as Chin Ho Kelly, not bad casting. I've always liked him and thought him to be vastly underated.

That shot of Kono is taken directly from the pilot of the original series. In fact, it's incproorated to the pilot's main titles as well (that main titles is longer, about 90 seconds, and has *mostly*, though not entirely, different visuals that the series' main titles). Once Kono gets past those guys, he flips another thug. Later, the captain of the oil tanker threatens to blow up the ship if the police don't leave. Kono sneaks up, gets the drop on him. As the captain turns to fire his machine gun, Kono drops him with his shotgun.
I always had a soft spot for Kono (or, I should now say, the original Kono). Zulu took part in the 1996 fan convention in Los Angeles, hanging out in the room where episodes were being shown with a film projector. As I was leaving the convention, I encountered Zulu at the front door. "Thanks for coming," he said. He seemed like he really meant it to me.
