In the film it hints at M's name, but does that mean that the name "Barbara Mawdsley" was purely for Benson's books?

Possibly. I'd stick to the Benson books for now.

I've always taken it that in GE - DAD, Dench/M was Barbara Mawdsley.

However, in CR, Dench/M is Melissa Messervy. :)

When i saw 'The Apartment' clip Bond said "I thought M was just a ramdomly assigned letter, i had no idea it stood for Ma.." then she cuts him off so i'm guessing its Martha :)

I've been through literary and cinematic Bond history with all af you...from Miles to Barbara, but please tell me that one of the qualifications of being the head of MI6 ISN'T having a first or last name beginning with "M." Sounds rather ridiculous, even for Bond.

I hope it's a codeword for what you said, BOND 93, or at least a coincidence that it is the same letter as the first letter of Sir Miles' name.

Maybe now it just stands for Mama...

The actual head of SIS in real life is codenamed "C" after one of their legendary spymasters.
But we all know that SIS has since been headed by people without a C in their name (e.g. Stella Rimmington).

By now, isn't she just called M in honor of Sir Miles? I thought the title originated with him but became hereditary in a sense..

Stella Rimmington headed MI5, not SIS. And now writes cacky thrillers. And is a euphemism for a sexual "thing".

He could have been about to address her by her last name (Mawdsley) when she told him to shut up. There's no way of knowing for certain what he was going to say.

You guys are spelling it wrong. Craig doesn't go, "I had no idea that it stands for Ma...", he really goes "I had no idea that it stand for Mo..."

With the Mo being the first syllable you hear when you say "Monarch"

...or Morrissey.

Or Mottram St Giles.

Which would be a lovely name.

Wasn't there some cartoon in the '90s that gave her character a name?

The only name I've heard for her is Barbara Mawdsley - and that was in the book, not a cartoon

According to Raymond Benson, Judi Dench's M is named Barbara Mawdsley. However, that's just a coincidence because M is "just a randomly assigned letter" to all heads of MI6 in the Bond universe. The real head of MI6 is known as C.

If you listen carefully Bond says "I had no idea it stood for Maw...", then M's cuts him off. So I assume it is Mawdsley.

Yes, but in Casino Royale, Bond confirms that it isn't a randomly-assigned letter, and that it in fact stands for M..." before she cuts him off.
