The Daily Mirror.

The Daily "James Bland / Craig cannot drive / Craig looks like a craggy-arsed builder / ask stupid questions about Sienna Thingy" Mirror

says

And new 007 Daniel Craig - the man with the golden hair, whose casting provoked an outcry among fans - is simply brilliant, oozing the kind of edgy menace that recalls Sean Connery at his very best.

What extraordinary people.

Like to fit in with the current generalized public opinion don't they?

Good to know you can trust them to have unbiased opinions of their own. :)

Given all this, I'm extremely curious as to which outlet will have the first negative review, or heck, even the first neutral review.

Well, there will be these, it's the natural order of things.

And The Fat Spinsters will let us know. no doubt.

The fan base is so polarized between Connery and Moore (i.e., serious/Fleming vs lighthearted/fantasy -- an approximation of all Bonds), I'd be surprised if there aren't many of them. That's just how it goes.

I found this bit in the times review funny

When talking about Craigs sex appeal the reviewer sais "He even makes his first assassination (shown in grainy black and white) an unsettlingly erotic experience."

The hard copy version in today's Daily Telegraph is a different review - and, if anything, even more positive (without evidently being negative about previous Bonds, which is nice).

I love this thread!

You know, it may sound sad, but I actually feel really proud. Bond wasn't looking great four years back, and it wasn't even that cool to like it. But now, the gambles taken by the producers, the [censored] taken by by Craig, it has all payed off, and we're being given what looks like it could be the greatest Bond in years. Perhaps even since the beginning!

Just found another review at http://www.aintitcool.com Apologies if this has already been posted.. According to the website it's 'good but not great.' These guys haven't exactly been pro royale so I'd reserve judgement on it..

Some other reviewettes in the AICN talkback:

This is a vast improvement on the Bond canon. Craig is both ruthless and believable in equal measure. Brosnan will look lightweight compared to this take on 007. Craig is a sensation and is more Connery than any of the others have been. My only dissapointment was the music and lack of Bond theme, which is only used at the end credits. Even Brozzy had the theme to remind us that he was Bond throughout, but poor DC only gets it at the end!! Maybe this is the one major reason that your reviewer felt it wasn't quite the Bond film he needed to remind himself it was. I dunno. Maybe he's also a dork!!

The reviewers comment being light on action is laughable. Sure the film slows to draw breath and let us in on the plot points. Even in this so-called lull we have the superb machette fight on the stairs and Bond being poisoned by Le Chiffre at the gaming table. It's here that he staggers out of the casino to his Aston for one of the few gadgets used in the movie. I won't ruin it for you, but it's another great momment in CR. Make no mistake, this is a very different Bond to the Brozzy era... thankgod... and I along with countless others enjoyed it for that fact. We've now got a Bond for this century... and no cheesy one-liners!!!

Although my personal favourite was th eone which says simply Damn you Michael Bay! :)

The reviews really are fantastic and it's great to see Craig getting such high praise. I don't think i've ever been this excited at the arrival of a new Bond film....only 12 days to go! :)

As a point of reference, does anyone remember what early reviews were like for Die Another Day and The World is not Enough? And further back, if at all possible?

I remember an early review of TWINE described it as "Like FRWL, a nice slow build."

Yeah right :)

Yeah, TWINE is far better than FRWL. :P

Seriously TWINE one of my favourites and I'm amazed than people here don't like it.

Looking forward very much to CR, I hope it's going to be very good and will justify me taking a day off to watch it.

For any CBN people who went to the screening, could you tell us how far the torture scene gets pushed?
