This is even better because I've only seen one episode of Season 1 (F/X didnt broadcast it much).

The only episodes I really remember were the ones from the early '70s when I was a real little kid, making me way too young to appreciate them. The only things that stood out at the time were the theme song, the match lighting the fuse and the "This tape will self destruct in five seconds" thing and the puff of smoke. It was never syndicated very well where I lived, and I never got to see the reruns on F/X until after they stopped playing them. So this will be fun to watch.

First, if you've only seen the Mission Impossible movies - you've GOT to see the original TV series.
Second, does anyone know ANYTHING about the release other than the date and that it will be the third season.
I hope it's single sided DVD's, lots of specials and nice packaging.

With all the excitement of the new film, I went back and looked at the MI reference book that came out around 1996 and checked out the episode guide and am intrigued to see these. They seem to be somewhat different from what came later, with the entire team not always together and even the Briggs character not participating in every episode.
Some of this was by necessity. Steven Hill, who played Briggs, is an Orthodox Jew and wanted to finish filming in time for the sabbath. M:I, however, was a very complicated show to film and required lots of overtime. This created problems and played a factor in Hill's departure.
There is one episode where Briggs doesn't even get the assignment, Cinamon Carter does. In others, Briggs devises the plan but the heavy lifting is done by others. One of these episodes is called "The Carriers," and was issued on VHS (I've got a copy in this format). In another episode, Briggs says someone involved in the case knows him and thus he can't make an appearance.
The 1996 book gets into these matters in more detail.

TheSaint asked why Cruise would have anything to do with the release that Mr * mentioned.
I too seem to recall that there was something relating to the original show (dvd release, video game, something) that Cruise blocked. I can't remember now what it was but I was pretty disgusted when I heard about it.
Mr * can you recall what it was?

I love the pilot episode where Briggs gets his orders not on a self destructing tape, but a self destructing record. Remember those, kids?
There were also occasional episodes where Briggs or Phelps would dispose of the tape by tossing it in a fire or in the water (lake or ocean, I forget the specifics).

Well I'd rather have Season 2 and on, but this is a start.
Then you'd better hope that Season 1 sells well. If it doesn't, Season 2 won't see the light of day for quite some time.
I highly doubt it. Peter Graves' introduction to the series in the second season was central to the success of the actual series. Theres no way they'd release just the first season call it a failure and give up right there. It should be expected that the second and subsequent seasons would outperform the first.

Here's the cover to the box set...

I can imagine many people picking up the box set and going: "So which one is Ethan Hunt?"

I used to love the show actually. Far more enjoyable than the movies. The TEAM aspect was always the thing that I loved most. Something that they practicaly ditched when making the films.

I think I'll pick up the three disc box set of all three films, will make a nice companion for the season 1 box set

Just found this out, the DVD for MI:III comes out on the 26th of September (in the US). A mere two weeks after the series is released.

good idea, I think I'll do the same.

Yet another TV series I love and adore showing up on DVD! I've never seen the "Briggs" eps, but I'll get it, nevertheless. My favorite ep of M:I has to be "The Mercenaries", which guest-starred Pernell "Bonanza" Roberts as the baddie. The episode features one of the most creative thefts put on TV...brilliant!

But I wonder what the sales figures for this DVD set of the TV series would be if those "movies with the same name" didn't exist. And whether it would even be released at all.
Who cares? We're getting it, that's all that matters.

Latest news from TVShowsonDVD is that the set has been delayed-no new release date yet.
Simultaneous release with MI3 probably. I was wondering why no one else was reporting this set.

YES!
My favorite series out on DVD. FINALLY! Now here's hoping they can get Get Smart and Six Million Dollar Man out. Yes, I know, Six Million Dollar Man is a cheesy show, but when I was a little kid, I thought it was the greatest.
Regards
Six Million Dollar Man was the greatest TV show of the 70s and Lee Majors is one cool TV hero ever.Lee Majors is a LEGEND!
