It could be like this: M WANTED to hire a professional poker player and told him "well, you know, your opponent is a banker to the world's terrorists

Also, the CR official website tries to establish a backstory about Bond's card playing abilities because in the "dossier" section, if you read about Bond's history they mention that he is an accomplished gambler.

In addition, you all sound very silly talking about hiring professional poker players to participate in a top-secret government mission with a high profile terrorist. I know the movie isn't real, but that kind of thing is too stupid for even P&W to dream up.

I'm sure CR will have plenty of plot holes. Let's do ourselves a favor and not try to make them up out of thin air.

It could be like this: M WANTED to hire a professional poker player and told him "well, you know, your opponent is a banker to the world's terrorists – so it might become a little dangerous for you…". Then that player said "no, thanks" and she had to take someone in her service who turned out to be Bond.
She just didn't tell him (and us) because she didn't want to let him know that he's only her second choice.

Maybe in a Roger Moore movie, because your idea is THAT silly :) !
