I just put this on my website: No Story Credit for Fleming on Casino Royale?

I know this has been discussed in the poster thread, but I wanted to pull out the discussion so it maybe gets noticed by the powers that be.

I actually don't think this is really a HUGE deal, but I do think this might just be an oversight. Mickey and Babs strike me as the type of producers who would be all for this return to the traditional billing, but may be too busy to have picked up on this detail. And seeing as a Bond poster hasn't used this billing since 1979, certainly Sony/MGM marketing isn't going to pick up on this. This is the sort of nutty thing us nutty fans catch...but sometimes nutty fans can catch things that do matter to the powers that be. If it matters, I hope they see this and will maybe have a chance to correct it down the road. :)

I agree. It's not that big of a deal that it's missing, but it would be nice to see it return. Perhaps it will credit him in the actual movie. :)

I think with the desire to return to all-things-Fleming, a story credit is both appropriate and required.

But as Fleming is already cited as having created the hero, will that justify another print run for what could only be described as whim's sake.

(But then again, they reprinted Brosnan's shaved look for TND, so who knows?)

IF (and thats a very possible if) we get another poster i hope it will be included :P i really would love to see it return - "Albert R Broccolis eon productions presents Daniel Craig as James Bond 007 in Ian Flemings Casino Royale" :) Now that will be heaven

I was really hoping for this kind of credit as well, considering I had closely looked at Fleming's credit in the previous films to see how it was done, and Casino Royale looked to be ideal for giving Fleming back his credit for the story.

Also, and though this isn't part of the credit tradtion, I really wanted to see a "Based on the Novel by Ian Fleming" follow on the screenwriters' credit. Considering that this movie is being promoted as a return to a style closer to the novels, I think it would be appropriate to emphasize Fleming.

Just switch it on the print run that actually contains the final MPAA rating.

Yup, point.

But as elsewhere, there already seems to be varying versions of this poster with regards to Vesper's look to Bond or camera. (At least in the digital world)

It may be insignificant, it may have not been used for such a long time...

... but its still bloody obvious to use the line "in Ian Fleming's Casino Royale".

I just wonder if this is part of th reason there's no special CR book release. i wonder if there was a conflict between EON and Fleming'd estate, or some sort of a financial disagreement.

Not at all likely.

For many, many years EON/Danjaq and the Fleming Estate have had a very friendly relationship.

Nobody would upset that now.

Two words: "Young Bond." Watch the lawsuits when Miramax tries to start that up.

I would assume that EON/Danjaq own the film rights to young Bond as well as old Bond.

I think we'll find that Danjaq has first refusal whether to make Young Bond films or not.

As to the poster, I thought it clearly says "Ian Fleming's James Bond". With the exception of Thunderball, no other Eon Bond film has given a story credit to Ian Fleming. Why would they start now? As for the possessive credit, it is just in keeping with the films since SWLM. I don't think it's a mistake or something someone has failed to catch. It just is.

Yes, Eon/Danjaq own the excusive film licence to all things James Bond.

The Fleming Estate are more than pleased with the arrangement and the money.

Agreed, although, to be technical, Danjaq does not own the rights to the non-Fleming Bond work. Danjaq (together, equally with United Artists Corp.) does own the film character rights and the right to invent new stories. Danjaq/UA has first refusal to make the non-Fleming Bond work. There is a difference. Eon does not own any rights - it is the service company that makes the Bond films for Danjaq/UA Corp.

I'm sure IFP would be happy to increase/maximize their IP rights. Hence their new adventures in the Bond trade. I wonder how many copies, worldwide, CR and the other Bond novels, will sell on the back of this film - will there be a slight peak in sales? However, Bond is small potatoes compared to the Fleming family's fund management revenues.

From what I understand, Danjaq does have the film/tv rights to the Bond character. When the original contract was made, they received the rights to any subsequent Bond novel written (of course with the exception of CR and TB). Therefore, the young Bond novels CANNOT be sold to another production company if EON decided not to make them into movies. It is the same situation as with Gardner/Benson novels.

We're not looking for a separate story credit ACE. We were just hoping Fleming's name would be moved back before the title of the film instead of before the character. With the exception of TSWLM, every movie of a novel has featured Fleming's name before the title. Even after TSWLM, it snapped back for Moonraker. Be nice to see that followed through for tradition's sake. This will be our last chance to see the credits this way. I also just think it would be good luck. :)

I agree Zen. But they didn't move it back for the Fleming titles used in the 1980's (get your point about novels - these were short stories). Moonraker was the last time. I'd love it for old times' sake if they did but we both think they won't. After all this time, I'm just happy we'll SEE some classic Fleming Bond in a movie.

Can't wait!

Yeah, actually, jaguar007, I think that's a more accurate summation.

Outraged chefs, jealous husbands, Bond and film fanoraks...the list is endless!

A lot of the blood in Hollywood land is split over billing. I mean Murino and Jeffrey Wright are firing agents right now!

Just think how hard Christopher Walken's agent fought to get his name inside a box on the AVTAK poster!

I hope it does.

I suspect that the reason IFP do not want to discuss the films of Young Bond is that they can only say films will be made if and only if Danjaq want to. And it is highly unlikely that, at this stage, Danjaq do not want to. They would have to pay fees and rights and royalties when they have what they need for free. Why should Danjaq whistle when the caged bird sings?

I know firsthand of one studio looking into it, and there's apparently one more.

He states it here, as well, but doesn't mention which companies:
