Now on the CBn main page...

Source says Campbell won't return

The director search continues...

Assuming that the rumors (2007 release and that the opening sequence has already been shot) surrounding Bond 22 are true then it would make perfect sense for Martin Campbell to return as director. I'm confident that he will return which makes me happy because I think he's a great director. Perhaps he'll become the next John Glen? What are your thoughts?

I would love to see a director do back to back Bonds again. I just not sure if Campbell is the man, I want to do them. But, if he is the one, so be it. How is that for fence sitting?

Yes good idea. I don't think he's a "great" director but he was much better than his successors(then again a hamster would have been better than his successors).

Bring him back...he doesn't exactly have anything better to do anyway...unless Greengrass drops out of Bourne...ah,ok, ok I'll shut up!

I'd rather like to see some sort of consistency throughout Craig's films. So I'd be good with Campbell's return - especially if I end up liking CR. Brosnan's run was plagued by him always having different directors that wanted a new spin on the character. Started off with an almost Dalton-like seriousness then moved into something a little more "Moorish/latter Connery-ish" then to the melodramatic Bond, then to the wild and crazy fantasy version. It was just all over the place. Some of it good, some of it bad, some of it "WTF have you done" and this was probably a byproduct of the producers and writers not knowing exactly what to do with Bond so they were always looking for a new twist on the character. There are pros and cons to it whichever way they go there, but as I said, I'd rather see some consistency...

Being a cautious fellow by saying "wait until after Casino Royale".

He did a fine job with GoldenEye which warranted him returning for Casino Royale. Just have to see what he still has in him before making a real judgment.

I just voted.

I think Campbell will not come back for Bond 22, but I would be quite happy for him to carry on the work straight away, so that we get a release date of late 2007!!!!

Here's hoping. I don't mind if they make the one after that in 2009, but it would be great to get another Bond movie so quickly. :D

Voted "Yes" to both questions. I enjoyed GoldenEye a lot and from what I've read/seen/heard about Casino Royale I'm sure I'll also enjoy it too.

So far, in my mind, Campbell has a 100% success rate, which will continue with Casino Royale.

I don't think that it is necessary for Campbell to return so that the film can come out in 2007. They could bring another director in and still have the film out by the end of next year.

Honestly, I'd rather see another director brought in for Bond 2.2, but if CR ends up being as good as it looks, then I wouldn't be opposed to Campbell returning.

Campbell has the advantage over any other director because the whole story of Casino Royale and Daniel Craig's version of James Bond is fresh in his mind. Therefore he'll be able to bring us a true sequel instead of having another director come in with his take on the new series and mess it up.

You're right, he does have an advantage over other directors, but it's not absolutely necessary to have him return just for the sole reason of getting the film out in 2007. If CR turns out as good as it appears to be, then I wouldn't oppose Campbell returning. I was just saying that they don't have to have Campbell return just to get the film out in 2007.

Oh okay, I understand. Campbell isn't needed for a 2007 release but it would be silly for Eon to hire a new director if he has indeed already filmed scenes for 'Bond 22'. Let Marty finish what he began, I say.

One of the things I've always liked about the Bond series is it's variety of directions it has taken over the years. And that's largely due to the large variety of directors. I would love to see another guys take on the next film, just as much as I'd love to see Campbell return.

I'm of both minds, really.

I meant that I hope they continue almost immediately with work on Bond 22 so that it is a 2007 release. And if that means confirming the director soon (whether that is Campbell or not), then I all for it!

I thought Martin Campbell did (and does) fine work, but I think changing directors keeps things fresh.
One of the major problems of the Dalton Era was that he inherited the same team that had been making Bond movies since OHMSS - John Glen, Richard Maibaum, Michael Wilson, etc- and by the mid-eighties they were just out of steam and ideas.

I also think what limits the Bond movies to a certain extent is EON's reluctance to hire directors who are more than competent middle managers. What drives a movie like "Batman Begins" (the oft mentioned inspiration for "Casino Royale" ) is the fact that the producers aren't afraid to hire a director with a creative vision. Christopher Nolan was in complete control of the movie, from the look to the script to the casting.
The result wasn't just another adventure ala "Batman and Robin", but something unique. Obviously, Nolan had limitations - the Batman fans are as passionate about their hero as we are about ours - but he wasn't afraid to try something different.

Now Campbell's a fine action director - but he's not exactly what you would call an auteur. And if EON was really going to reboot Bond, my hope was that they would have found someone who could really bring something fresh to it. But Bond movies are made by committee - and I doubt EON would have surrendered the reins to the family business so willingly. That's a shame too, because everyone's choices on these boards - Greengrass (overrated, I think) to Tarantino to Doug Liman - are really provocative.

What do you think?

I doubt very much scenes have been shot for Bond 22.

Martin Campbell will probably not return as he has to finish post on Casino Royale while the Bond 22 director has to prep the film.

I doubt very much that Campbell will return.

I also think that a Bond 22 director has probably been chosen already to get to work on the next film. These things take months of prep.

BTW, I love Campbell and think he is a great director.

A friend went down to Pinewood to see a friend who works there - not on the Bond film I hasten to add.

Said friend bumped into Campbell near the offices and asked if he was going to return for 22.

In no uncertain terms, he said he wasn't. Reason being, he is very tired and this film has been very hard work.

While I realise things can change, if the film is successful and powers want people back, money can be a great inducive. But this is very much 'of the moment'.

No Return.

I see that as just the opposite, Righty my man. If there's any truth to Bond 22 in '07, then there is no way Campbell can be the director. He will be working in post production right up until the day of release of CR and no time to prep Bond 22 for what would have to be a Jan start. I would think they'd need another director to start prepping now to pull off back to back Bonds.

EDIT: Whoops. I see ACE said this same thing above (smart man ). Yes, what he said.

Cheers for that, Simon. I don't expect Campbell to return (even if BOND 22 appears in 2008 or 2009), and don't especially want him to, either. Nothing against the man, and I'm sure he's doing a very fine job on CASINO ROYALE, but time for new blood. I'm sure he'd say the same thing. If Campbell returns to Bond, I'm sure it won't be for many years.
