"Serendipitously"
What does that mean? Sorry, I'm only 15  .

serendipity

1. Making discoveries, by accident and sagacity, of things not in quest of.
2. Discovering something by accident while investigating something quite different. For example, finding a biological culture "ruined" by mould, and discovering the antibiotic penicillin as a consequence.
3. A fortunate occurrence created by unanticipated luck.

Variety has a report on the screening. For those without a subscription, go HERE.

Seems fairly neutral in its description - no real judgements are made.

Given JJ's initial comments, is the word "footrage" in the heading deliberate?

Moving this to spoilers; on balance it's probably better there.

Though a good actor, he lacks the style and he lacks the looks (take a good look at those ears when he emerges from the sea

How profound. I regret that I cannot remember whether Ian Fleming ever described Bond's ears to us.

My ears, on the other hand, are good enough to hear the sound of the scraping of the bottom of a barrel.

I saw bits and pieces of a not too shabby action movie that could end up becoming an interesting James Bond flick indeed, but I did NOT see commander James Bond: Daniel Craig just is not agent 007... sorry. Though a good actor, he lacks the style and he lacks the looks (take a good look at those ears when he emerges from the sea).

I'm with Shrublands sentiments in post #30:

Having watched some of Craig's work, seen him in the trailer and stills that have leaked, the impact of the shift from dyed haired, buffont lightweight ageing lounge lizard Brozza to tough as nails, toned, rugged Craig is no more striking than the shift from rugged, two fisted, callous Connery to fresh-faced, lightweight public schoolboy Rog, surely.

Unless you want it to be. Craig IS different. Intentionally so. And, IMO, correctly.

I'm Dutch. I have seen the footage too . Thanks to my friend Sem in Amsterdam. Because I always loved the more gritty and at the same time more romantic Bond films, like On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

I loved the fist-to-fist fights. Remembers me of the fast editing of director Peter Hunt with the fight scenes of Lazenby at the opening scenes. Le Chiffre is certainly not a Blofeld in this film, but you can compare him a bit with Kristatos? He's using his criminal activities to save his life in the first place and secondly to enrich himself in luxury.

James Bond's Aston Martin DBS is not a Q-car this time. No gadgets, he used the car to the full :D

I am a huge Pierce fan but even then except Goldeneye his era seemed too
much of predictable , escapist entertainment. There was no real storytelling.
The villians except GE were cardboard cutouts. His last three films were good
only in parts.i.e like the DAD opening was exceptional and very entertaining.
But mostly his last 3 films were really boring filled with over the top , spectacular action sequences. And lets accept it it was as if the makers were
trying to fill in great action sequences only.It just doesnt work.
I am giving Brozza credit but it wasnt his fault. The makers and the studio
wanted all this and got it.
Now the situation is different the makers want a compelling story like OHMSS
which is great for Bond fans.OHMSS is the best Bond only because it breaks the norms of the typical bond films. The Craig era will have films like CR and
not TND.

I would be really happy if CR is just 50 % as good as OHMSS.THen IMO they have nailed it and the Bond series will win over new fans for sure.
Look guys Craig is not a good looking man but surely is a fine actor.
That is what Bond needs right now an actor and not a fine looking man.

And think of the makers who have taken the risk of having a lesser looking
man then Brozza.Surely they must have seen something.Maybe his acting talent
or maybe they needed a hard, take no [censored] james Bond.

...and those ears? That was one of te most heard comment by many of the attendees. Not just me (biased or not) :-)

And can you really imagine a group of well placed film exhibitors being shown 20mins of Casino Royale, in a surprise screening and the main topic of exchange ending up being ears. Ridiculous and an insult to our intelligence.

I suppose we can all be rather shaken and stirred by the fact that one of us (JJ) has actually seen some footage of Casino Royale and that he has taken the time to tell us what it is actually like and how Craig equips himself as 007.

Thank goodness it comes from an unbiased source and one that has no preconceived opinions on Craig and Casino Royale, that

Hey kids, it's just an opinion and what do I know???

Good thing for Ol'Ian that there was no internet around back in 1962 when he sighed <<I'm looking for Commander James Bond, not an overgrown stunt man. [on meeting Sean Connery]>>. Just an opinion, and what did he know... Turned out to be not too bad of a casting decission afterall and in the end he changed his mind and grew accustomed to big Tam. Perhaps there is still hope for me aswell

Hey, play nicely kiddos. Sounds like JJ like the footaged enough, but he never did, and still doesn't, like Craig much. No biggie. I'm sure some more opinions will make it to the press soon enough.

The Bond-and-Le-Chiffre-playing-cards-at-the-casino footage lasted not much longer than a minute. More impressive and a potential classic Bond action sequence (in OHMSS style) is the man running out of the casino, hopping into his new Aston and busrsting off into hot pursuit when he learns Vesper has disappeared.

And yes, I normally don't believe in 100% white or 100% black (I'm more into grey I guess). Further I am very passionate about 'my' James Bond, which is possibly why I am more critical (and sometimes relatively less forgiving) with Bond compared to 'other, normal' films). I always hope each Bond film to be better than all those that preceded it. Doesn't always happen of course (quite the opposite!), which then of course results in 'not love at first sight'... usually the second and subsequent screenings make me warm up to the film, resulting in my (more or less) embracing each and every one of the entries in the series in the end... will no doubt happen to CR aswell, though would be nice if the love affair would hit it off big time right from the start on Nov 17th already  Fingers crossed!

Oh come on guys it's just his opinion, let him be for Gods sake. Don't you think everyones goin a little OTT with their comments towards the man? At least he's given us some info on scenes from the film and how they look, so let him be. And btw, by saying the scenes look like OHMSS, does that mean the camera shakes a lot and you can barely see the fight? Or does it zoom in too much and stuff like that? In any case calm down with the bashing, it's going a bit overboard...

I will repeat what I heard over and over for 12 years between 1973 and 1985. Roger Moore is not Sean Connery.

Yet he gave us 7 films, and kept the series going. He was popular with younger people who were not old enough to see Connery in the cinema. And he did give us some memorable moments that will remain iconic for decades to come.

Now their are some in the generation who grew up on Brosnan who want to slap Craig for his looks and acting. GET OVER IT! A 20 minute rough cut demo is not going to be that impressive especially to a die hard Bond fan. Too many elements can spoil the viewing pleasure. For example, you mention that you heard music from TWINE, TND, OP and TSWLM. Yet there are other people who would not have guessed that simply because they are not that familiar with the series such as us.

The film is also going to be cut out of order of scenes and the sound effects will also be lacking if not completely missing.

I can remember people complaining about Roger Moore's head being too small, Lazenby's voice not sounding right, Dalton not handsome enough. Yet we have their films and the series continues. I thought I had heard everything, but for one to point out how much his ears stick out when he comes out of the sea, - - give me a break! We have all seen the footage and photos of how buff Craig looks on the beach. He obviously has been working out. Yet the first thing you point out is the ears. Well, since I'm in my mid 40s, I guess I haven't heard everything yet.

One last remark about those notorious ears... my powers of observation do not always do me credit and at first I didn't immediately consciously notice them. It was at the after party (and after a few drinks :D ) that I was pointed out to them by several other (individual) attendees, most of them women and some of them even 'film professionals'. I couldn't disagree with them and thought this was worth pointing out in my comments on the event. Thank goodness I didn't mention the man's big toe on his left foot which I think was a bit... ah never mind :D

Since when are someone's features off limit for discussion?

But hopefully when the film comes out in November, with the final score and everything else, people will be too busy concentrating on the story to worry about Dan's ears!! lol
