Now on the CBn main page...

Newest James Bond film previewed at Euro Cinema Expo

Today in Amsterdam, 12 minutes of Casino Royale were shown at Cinema Expo- the European Film trade show for cinema owners/exhibitors. Errr... what can I say? I saw bits and pieces of a not too shabby action movie that could end up becoming an interesting James Bond flick indeed, but I did NOT see commander James Bond: Daniel Craig just is not agent 007... sorry. Though a good actor, he lacks the style and he lacks the looks (take a good look at those ears when he emerges from the sea). The chase with the new Aston Martin though is excellent and Caterina Murino -who made a live appearance- is a most stunning and wonderful, gracious Bond girl

This is exactly the kind of criticism people have been leveling at Craig from the beginning, with cheerleaders saying that, indeed, he will look like and be Bond when the final movie is completed. This is not good news. I'm curious if you saw him in drama scenes and/or in the tux.

Wow! Is this why our Joyce said she saw a CR poster up in the city?

This is a pretty interesting event. Thanks for the report J J.

I saw both: it was a mix of action scenes (like the B&W liquidation scene from the beginning of the film and the action 'on the bridge')-Bond really is getting bruised here!- to the more glamorous casino scenes. There is also a scene in a train that looks very much FRWL James Bond. As I said, mixed feelings here: right idea, wrong pussy... err cat!

Yes, Sony has done a lot of outdoor advertising for CR in Amsterdam, because of this event. They used the 'Cannes' motive (the more traditional gun pose), not the 'Casino' look.

I'm wondering if Sony might bring these 12 minutes to Comic Con?

You should have gone to the RAI where you'd have seen big bill boards for CR...

Someone else (FLEMINGFAN) claimed to have seen footage as well and said Craig was the most exciting thing about the film and was owning the role.

J J, would you mind describing the footage you saw (put it in spoiler brackets if you must)?

I doubt he could really see much from a demo reel (probably action-centric and definitely sans music) that'd make him change his mind, considering he makes a idiotic comment about Craig's ears in his first post. He took his bias in the door with him.

Considering that (and J J's posting history about how he thought the film was going to make under $100 million dollars just because of Craig), I think his impressions were actually quite positive.

I'm sure we'll see some other impressions popping up in the next couple days if a demo reel was really shown.

Music was mainly 'old' David Arnold: Most of it was from TWINE (even the opening bars from the song); there was some TND, a bit Octopussy JB theme and a cue from SWLM. Footage began in B&W (Leo the Lion in B&W): cross cut Bond discussing a rather grafic assassination he has just commited with hios next victim. Jump cut to a scene in color with M who is not amused. The scenes didn't really have a narrative and seemed somewhat glued together like loose sand, but were intruiging nonetheless: bridge chase, Bahamas, Casino, Bond and Le Chiffre playing, Le Chiffre almost being punished by dark-guy-with-sword for not winning (only reason his hand is not cut off is because he is still going to need it; his girl friends arm however...), Aston DB5, new Aston chase which seems to end in a crash, train sequence, a heavily bruised 007... lot of violence...

...and those ears? That was one of te most heard comment by many of the attendees. Not just me (biased or not) :-)

There was metal detector security at the entrance...

I hoped the Bond footage to be the highlight of this week at Cinema Expo; the true highlight, however, turned out to be a lecture/presentation by self acclaimed King of the World James Cameron on 3D cinema, complete with footage from his Deep sea films, Star Wars, King Kong, Robots, Polar Express, etc. all in digital 3D... amazing!!!!

It wasn't meant as a promo for the general public: it was a 'world premiere' for a gathered group of cinema/industry professionals to give them an idea about what they will be showing on their main screen(s) this November. I don't think it will make the internet in the form it was presented today.

Very interesting article. Tell me though, is the whole reason you didn't like Craig simply because of his looks? Or did you think his acting was bad? Harmsway said he knew someone who said it looked great and I understand opinions vary but there must be something that you found that was specificly bad about him. Could it have been just the way it was thrown together? Just curious...

Hmm, JJ. I thought the footage was excellent. I think DC in the excerpts I've seen is amazing: immensely charismatic, holding the attention with a magnetic, original screen presence. I think CR will be a clever, gritty, tight, character-driven romantic, mystery thriller - a revelation and development in the same way that Dalton was from Moore. I couldn't disagree with you more about DC as Bond but then it is just a matter of opinion. People I know who have seen the more footage and a rough full trailer are very impressed by Craig. Once the Craig doubters see him on screen as Bond, they may convert...

It is quite possible that it has got to do with the way this montage was edited: as said it sort of lacked narrative. The complete film will obviously 'suck you in' much better. Anyways, there were a lot of scenes action and non action that had a 'Bond feel'. But for me, I just missed seeing an actor that looked like 007 to me: Craig looks like a great villain. My accid test with these Bond promos (I've seen 'em all from GoldenEye onwards) has always been 'goose pimples'... those were not there today, I'm sorry to say. It maybe just 'biased' (which I doubt) old me, but I was not the only one... Nonetheless, can't wait to see the completed film this November!

AHH! I never noticed ACE's report (sorry, common male blindness  ). Well done as well. I guess here are the two camps you were talking about, JJ, should be very interesting. Now, does anyone know when the next trailer will be released. ACE, you said that you know people who have scene a rough draft so to speak, do you know how close it is to completion?
