don't ask, it's a great part of the script - and believe me, this is something you'll want to find out on screen

James Bond with a ... machine gun!

A new fresh direction after the Brosnan-films :D

It's used for about 30 seconds, and even then, it only fires a single shot. So don't get any ideas about this turning into a DIE HARD-style showdown.

Sure, the Walther PPK is Bond's normal gun and should always be. But sometimes, you just need a nice big- gun to make a statement. And it looks oh-so-cool while Craig's wearing a nice 3-piece suit.

Shooting In Italy 05

For me, this is the coolest picture YET of Craig. The suit, the natural pose, the expression, and the Connery-like attitude. Absolutely cool. I have to agree with others that say Craig and a machine gun look more compatible than it did for Brosnan.

mark, I'm also not seeing 2,3,4.

EDIT: link was going to the wrong photo. Fixed now.

He reminds of a 20/30's era gangster like Johnny Dillenger in that pic.

And to address the issue of what type of gun it is; I'm not sure either! The silencer, front end, and magazine all seem like a MP5, but the rear half and buttstock seem too...chunky somehow. Maybe the SAS has some new SMG I'm yet unaware of.

I read elsewhere it's a suppressed Heckler and Koch UMP-9 HKs follow up to the MP5, if that means anything to anyone.

It looks like you nailed it! There's a write up of the generic version at http://www.hkdefense...g/ump/ump9.html though I'm pretty sure that the version that DC has is the suppressed version.

Wow, #7 - at least to me - is a perfect mixture of Connery and The Godfather. Just perfect. Was a bit worried about the MG but should be all right. Great pics.

Yup. Just like the picture, it should be suitably badass. :D

Now THAT is James Bond. That's the best picture that we've had of Craig so far. I'm unsure about the gun in the picture, though (we had enough machine guns in the Brosnan Era), but ignoring that and just looking at Craig, that's how James Bond is supposed to look. :D

That's a relief. I'm not against them using them, but I couldn't stand how they used them during Brosnan's films.

Probably because it is several years newer and more powerful than the more traditional H&K MP5, but still smaller than a full-on assault rifle . A good analogy can be made beteen the gun and Craig's Bond come to think of it!

It's a UMP9, so not really.

It was probably chosen just because it's indeed newer, looks badass and kills people...so yes, a good analogy with Daniel's Bond.

Not sure who chose it, but in the script Bond approaches White with a Pistol. From the "Bond on Set" book, Craig mentions he suggested Bond use something a little bigger, for kick.

Yeah after the movie even I was wondering to myself, 'Why did Bond need that big a gun for only 1 shot?' but I truly didn't care becuase he looked so badass with it.

A small update The sub-machine gun that DC is holding is made be H+K, but it is not a MP5 , it is a H+K UMP chambered for .45 pistol ammo, whilst the MP5 is chambered for 9mm. :)
Sorry, it seems that someion has already posted something like this.

Actually it is an H&K UMP9.

On Wikipedia it says...

Apart from the different chambering, all versions feature the same basic design, the most noticeable difference being the curved magazine used on the UMP9.

And if you look at this picture of Craig holding the gun you can see that the magazine is indeed curved:

I concur. While I have yet to perform objective testing on this, I have been told that you lose some accuracy when using a suppressor. Given that, the carbine-sized UMP makes a lot of sense.

It is certainly much easier to place a shot at range when using open sights with a long gun since the sight radius is longer, in addition to any advantages in accuracy from the longer barrel. It is also much easier to achieve the kind of precision needed for such a shot with a carbine, rifle, or carbine-sized submachine gun than with a pistol where, to be frank, there's just not as much to hold onto. :)

It's not that Bond couldn't have made the shot; but since he was aiming at a moving target, albeit one that stopped right before the shot was fired, fast, accurate, and precise pointing would be a boon.

As a point of comparative perspective, if I had to make that same shot with a pistol, I'd want either a match-grade .22 or .32 and red-dot sight, neither of which would have had anywhere near the effect on Mister White of a well-aimed shot from either an HK UMP or MP5. If it was me, I'd prefer the long gun as well.
