Saw it last night.

Snakes is lots of fun. Just goes to show that with the right ideas, any ridiculous concept can be turned into something really enjoyable. One of the few films that is actually suspenseful and hillarious at the same time. (Last Crusade comes to mind.)

Loved it, and that end title song--very catchy!!!! I had the added bonus of our theatre showing it in DLP, so that was extra sweet.

It is unexpectedly scary. Quite scary, in fact. It's remarkably well-crafted in that regard - once the movie gets heated up, it gets very intense. And at the same time, there's a good sense of humor woven throughout.

But here's really why SNAKES ON A PLANE is fantastic - it's shameless, unpretentious entertainment. It's a scary ride with a sense of fun at the same time. You've got Samuel L. Jackson being badass (his presence is definitely part of the appeal of this film), you've got snakes offing people left and right (the body count in this film is ridiculous), and you have characters you care about so that when they die, it has some impact.

For a film that had no right to be good, it is. Is this movie ridiculous? Yeah. But that's why it's great - it takes itself with a grain of salt. It's a film with a silly premise that is really just there to entertain, and that it does. It's one of the best times I've had at the movies this year and feels like a drink of water in a desert of summer films that just failed to be as thrilling as they should be. Is it an Oscar-winner? No, and nor should it be. But it delivers on what it promises, and that makes it stand out.

Well said, Harmsway. :)

What makes this film such solid fun is how it takes brutally sharp turns being a legitimately frightening, grotesque horror flick with the disaster element of a transatlantic plane flight thrown in, and a semi-self-aware, over-the-top camp-fest of the highest (or is that lowest?) standards. Truly one hell of an unexpectedly awesome cross between absurd dark comedy and a full-throttle thriller. All this at a compact, but fully-loaded and non-stop 105 minutes. And boy, what a...brilliant ending, to say the least.

To give everyone a taste of what we're dealing with, one of my favorite lines, as hilariously delivered by the movie's main non-snake baddie:
Spoiler

I mean, WTF?! Stuff of the heavens. (I don't think that's much of a spoiler, just being on the safe side)

Reminds me of when I saw a revival showing of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre at the Balboa Theater many moons ago. Halfway through the film a giant dude covered in a bedsheet came bursting through the front side exit doors, firing up a chainsaw and emptying half the theater.

Good times.

I have been eagerly awaiting this cinematic masterpiece, only to find out this morning that the UAE government, in its 'wisdom', has decided to ban it (not uncommon, same with Brokeback Mountain and various others). I don't yet know why they have chosen not to show it here but what the hell is wrong with showing a bit of personal responsiblity??!! If you don't want to see a scary film about snakes on a plane, DON"T GO TO SEE IT! I, like the majority of adults, am perfectly capable of deciding for myself what will and what will not offend me, thank you very much. What a dump this place is. :) :P :P
