It's long been speculated by Bond fans that 2007 is a perfect date for the release of a James Bond film with the year being a gimmick that will only come around once every thousand years.
And it's also known that Bond screenwriters Purvis and Wade have been working on the script for Bond 22 (or 2.2 whichever you prefer) since at least October.
And there are rumors that the plot for the next movie follows on from Casino Royale.

But are the Bond producers considering back-to-back filming with an eye to a 2007 release? It's not without Hollywood precedence. Back in the mid-1980s the movies DUNE and CONAN THE DESTROYER shared production facilities in an effort to cut down on costs. The later 1980s saw the filming of the second and third BACK TO THE FUTURE movies (which led scenes from the third one to appear at the end of the second one) and more recently the LORD OF THE RINGS movies and the two PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN sequals have used the practice to cut down on costs.

So, are the Bond producers planning the same move, the QuickNews item uncovered by zencat, which itself references a DAILY EXPRESS article would seem to indicate this is the case:

I thought Craig already had another project lined up - would this not quash this story?

No evidence to support this mind, just odd stories remembered. Nothing in imdb.com either...

Oh yeah, 'Female First' are really going to have the exclusive inside track on this  Previous Bond-related stories they have run include Craig can't play poker, Craig will portray a 'bumbling Bond', Angelina Jolie will be in CR, and so on. They're at the bottom of the tabloid garbage pile alongside Contact Music.

Consider the source.

It's not like they couldn't do it though. Same schedule as Royale assuming the script could get done. Craig could do whatever he wants from June (I would assume he's done with CR by then) until December. Thats a good enough break.... right?

Yes, terrible source. They published a lot of rubbish. And seeing as they link to criagnotbond at the end...

Besides, I think it's would be impossible to get Bond 22 out in 2007.

Well the article actually points to a DAILY EXPRESS story. That would seem to be interesting since wasn't it THE MIRROR that broke the Craig casting?

I think we'll get BOND 22 in 2008, if only because they'll (presumably) want to firmly establish Craig as Bond in the public mind as quickly as possible (and, Brosnan fan that I'm not, I still concede that Brosnan remains 007 in the eyes of many). 2008 will also mark Fleming's centenary year, and there'll also be a new adult Bond novel from IFP, so those tie-ins should be helpful to a new Bond film.

But 2007? I doubt it.

Some countries will be getting a Bond movie released in 2007 anyway.

Hard, but not impossible...

I feel the JFK speech on the moon landings coming to mind:

[paraphrase since I don't have it front of me]

We choose to go to the moon and other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.

(I think Brett has a good point).

Worst case scenario is we just get a 007 DVD in 2007...I think it's highly likely they will at least try to get it off the ground.Maybe that's why haggis was signed? to help the set up?

It's possible, but unlikely. I tend to think they'd want a break. I would be ecstatic if it was the case, though.

It shouldn't be impossible, but I'm not buying it just yet. Craig's got another job lined up and if they were planing to do this, why not shoot them simultaneously? Then again, I suppose a Bond film doesn't have to have much in the way of crew carrying over (certainly not cast) and it's not as if they wouldn't want the work!

Wouldn't seem to make much sense for them to do this. I know it is not unheard of in Hollywood, but most of the examples mentioned do bring some troubling points to the table. When this is done, not only does the movie suffer in terms of creativity, but financially as well.

For example, Back to the Future III made a lot less money than BTTF 2, and was conidered by many to be worst of the series. The final Matrix only took in about half of the second film. (a 300 million drop!) And I will tell you now the final Pirates film will make less than this year's.

Looking at Bond's history, TMWTGG took in less money than Live and Let Die and is generally (I know there are execptions) thought to be the worst in the series.

I hardly doubt that the producers (or Sony) are willing to sacrifice millions of dollars in order to keep Craig fresh in audience minds. I think it is a terrible idea.

Well, we can't put too much faith into the idea yet as it is this early on.

I've made my feelings on this subject clear in many previous posts- EON missing the boat on releasing a 007 movie in 2007 would be a colossal, laughable blunder. That said, I don't see how they can logistically pull it off at this point. Surely the creative team will feel pretty drained when all is said and done with CR- who would want to start another gargantuan Bond pic right away? I do like the idea of a quick follow up for a new actor (LALD-TMWTGG) in order to establish him in the public consciuosness- something especially helpful in this current "reboot" situation. In the end though, I don't think we'll have theatrical 007 in 007. The whole Bond release timetable was thrown off long ago by the Sony buyout of MGM, and even to some extent Pierce's insistence on a 3 year break between TWINE and DAD. I think 007 on blu-ray DVD will be the series' only legitimate correlation with 2007.

There are a few things we need to consider. First, didn't they say a few months ago that P&W already started working on Bond 22 script? Then doesn't that mean they already have a head start?
Also, by this point in production, P&W aren't needed much anymore. They can work primarily on the Bond 22 script until, say, October/November. By that point, Broccoli and Wilson can start doing the other planning that is needed for the movie, while still giving the actors (Craig, Dench, etc) a few months off. Principal photography can start in late January (like CR) and there wouldn't be too much difficulty. I don't see what the fuss is all about.

A year ago today.... I would've said no way. With just a name and director, no Bond, no girl and no real prospects.... EoN was out of touch. After hiring Haggis, Craig and producers being completely unashamed of making strong choices and saying, "Don't tell us you won't like it movie going public. You haven't seen it. We have seen it and you will like it." This is what movie producers should be doing. EoN is leading the public, and not letting craignotbond.com and other whiners change their approach.

In short, yeah, I think they can do it. And I think it will be great.

For the reasons I posted in the initial post I think there's quite a bit of circumstancial evidence that even if the Bond producers are not planning it, they are at least considering it.

In fact it would show a great deal of support for (and confidence in) their new man to have him already green lit (and close to shooting) the second one when Casino Royale opens.
