Can't believe that someone actually beat you to it but Mi6 has revealed that the classic Aston Martid DB5 will return as Bond's personal car in Casino Royale that is big news. Here's a link.

Cool. Apart from the car news:

MI6 can reveal that two original DB5's are being shipped to the Bahamas where location shooting with Daniel Craig is expected to commence in one month's time.

Hmmm.... one month's time? Does this mean that filming has indeed been delayed? Perhaps this explains the failure to announce Vesper, Le Chiffre, etc. (or is explained by the failure to announce Vesper, Le Chiffre, etc.).

It's a bit odd that this all-new James Bond is driving the old DB5, isn't it? It doesn't really fit in with the 'starting over' concept they keep talking about.

I know someone's going to say it's his personal car, and it just happens to be the same one Connery drove in Goldfinger, etc. But if everything's going to be brand spanking new and modern, why pander to the past with something like this?

This is cool news. Always good to see the DB5 - I think the DB5 and Bond are forever linked together. It's just the ultimate "cool" car (well that and the awesome old Ford Fairlane Bond drives in Cuba in DIE ANOTHER DAY, which is just about as cool as the DB5 is).

Wow that's quite something. It's really the DB5 that marks James Bond; he's had other good cars, but that one takes the cake.

Think of it like Dirk Pitt. He's an old car collector; maybe the new James is somewhat along the similar lines. I think the DB5 is a timeless sort of a car, personally.

Well, not so fast, tbp82. This morning an anonymous tipster sent an email to CBn (and, I presume, other Bond sites as well) with this "news." The person was very eager for CBn to post it, but he used a noreply@hotmail address, which in the past has meant trouble of the Moomoo troll variety. I don't know if the CBn Team is working to verify this, or if Mi6 has somehow verified it, but know the original source of this news is a little dubious.

Besides, this just feels wrong to me. I think after DAD, the filmmakers would avoid these self-conscious "winks" to old Bond films. Using the DB5 seems to contradict all that we know about Casino Royale being a fresh start. I don't know, my gut tells me this is bogus. And if it isn't, it's a big mistake, IMO.

Well, with his impeccable taste, I could easily see Bond opting for a classic car like the Aston Martin DB5 as his personal vehicle.

Well, it's interesting to see that this news might not be valid. I thought it inconsistent with EON's updating of the character to re-establish him as a contemporary figure (no tuxedo, etc.).

I wouldn't be surprised if the DB5 isn't in the film and they just stick with the new DBS.

If we see a DB5 in the Craig-era, it won't be in this film.

I'm with zencat on this. This just smells bogus.

I take this as good news. Probably the best news yet about Casino Royale.

The reason is that perhaps this is an indication that CR may not be a reboot.

If Bond is going to also be outfitted with the new Aston Martin DBS as well, perhaps there will be scenes both in the present and past, when Bond gets the new car. Q nor Moneypenny need not be in the film for that to happen, and Judi Dench as M need only appear in the scenes set in the present.

Aside from the slight problem with maybe negating the scene where Bond gets Q Branch's Aston for the first time in Goldfinger, which can also be explained away with the Aston Martin in the film really being his personal car and not courtesy of MI6, CR can then be put into regular continuity.

I really really hope that is the case. Then I will be able to get behind this film 100 percent.

If there's any truth to this, maybe the DB5 will be driven by Vesper or the villain or will make some cameo appearance of some kind. But I just can't reconcile the idea that Eon will keep Craig out of a tuxedo, yet put him behind the wheel of a DB5. Besides, we know Bond takes a train to the casino in Montenegro so he doesn't appear to have car in this part of the film. This means he'll drive both the DB5 and the DBS in The Bahamas? Seems weird.

Well the Bentley would be ridiculous, a modern beltley would be way too plush and large for Bond to have as a personal car...

It's not going to be a problem anyway everyone knows the DB5 as Bond's car, the classic. Good that it's making an appearance.

And then Bond will say to himself: "Ooh, nice car. I think I'll adopt it as my own personal trademark car."

Well, we were told that CASINO ROYALE would "explain" how Bond came by his famous Aston Martin (forget who told us - must have been Campbell, Haggis, Purvis, Wade or someone).

But I just can't reconcile the idea that Eon will keep Craig out of a tuxedo, yet put him behind the wheel of a DB5.

Hang on, since when has it been confirmed that Craig will be kept out of a tuxedo? Personally, I think Craig was just kidding. Don't really care either way, but I don't see any official or even reliable news that there won't be a tux on Bond in CR.

I'm really beginning to wonder why there have been no casting announcements, though.

No they have said the DB5 will be James Bond's personal car. No-one will notice and the few that do surely won't be that bothered, I mean come on it's not Sean Connery, M is not the same, it's set in modern times with a new organisation...

It's just a film, it's artwork, it's a modern translation of Bond's beginning in the double o section. I am always amazed how many people just don't get that and take it sooo seriousely.

Oh, yeah... I took that to mean the new Aston, but I guess it could mean the DB5. I don't know. This idea throws me worse than Judi Dench. Had we not seen the DB5 in the Brosnan films (and all the video games), maybe this idea would feel fresh, but now it just feels labored. But I guess it's all in how it's handled.

I'm not even crazy about the DBS, so maybe I just don't like the idea of there being any Aston Martin in Casino Royale. I wanted them to go all the way and clean the slate completely. Put him in something...I don't know, different. Next we'll hear Casino Royale will have a jetpack.

OK...That made me nearly spit out my coffee. zencat.

Also, I took Campbell's comment to mean how Bond came to appreciate AM. Clearly they're puting the AM in place of the Bentley. So, the notion of Bond having an old DB5 as opposed to a '33 Bentley, might work.

I still don't buy it and havent heard any mention from any of the AM people I know....and I know quite a few.

Still, my gut tells me this is just a rumor.

I am in with the camp of not having this car, personal one or not. It would look weird to have everything updated except for this antique car he is driving around the town. If anything use the new Aston Martin instead.

And on the tuxedo change, my gut told me that this is the push in the direction of the bourne identity, where bourne just wears normal clothes as a spy. For some reason, I think they are using bourne as a model in some areas to modernize bond. Anything to this?

Here's where i'm puzzled--they have never said they are going to wipe the slate clean. Change things up--yes BUT not wipe everything out and start over. IN FACT they specifically told us they are going to show us how Bond becomes the Bond we all know. Therefore they will of course show us a number of the traditional things and how they got their start. Yes?

Besides, we already know how and where he got the DB5. Q gave it to him in Goldfinger. It's there on the screen. If this is now supposed to be a new, modern, updated, yet separate version of James Bond, to the one we've seen before, then why even bother trying to make such a blatant link to the past?

Talk about not having the courage of your convictions, if this turns out to be true.

But this sort of thing is really the whole problem though, isn't it? On the one hand they're saying it's the all-new James Bond. Fresh start, no tuxedo, and all that. And on the other hand we've got Judi Dench coming back as M, and possibly even another return of the 42-year-old Aston Martin DB5.

If it's going to be a new take on James Bond, then it would be much better, IMO, if they just went with it, and did it properly. Rather than go with some half-hearted attempt that trades off past glories, while at the same time pretending that it's something new and different.

Is it too cynical to suggest that, in the hallowed halls of movie making by committee, the Sony marketing team discovered that the DB5 is the car most identified by James Bond gamers (because the DB5 has actually appeared in more videogames than films), hence, they imagine its inclusion in Casino Royale will provide continuity for this most "lucrative" fanbase (who studios frequently pander to, even at the expense of logic)?

Anyway, I won't get too bent out of shape about this until we get some real confirmation. And even then, who knows? Remember, the DB5 was also in The World Is Not Enough...until it wasn't.

It's a reboot, "Bond Begins", or whatever the hell you want to call it, but they still have to keep or add some of the things that makes Bond, Bond. As stated, Bond is forever linked to this car in the same way that Bond is linked to vodka martinis and introducing himself as Bond, James Bond. To take it away, even for a reboot or whatever would just be a sin. IMHO. It also helps usher in a new Bond and don't tell me that whenever you see Bond behind the wheel it doesn't bring a small smile to your face. They don't have to explain why it's there or how he got it. Nobody really knows what the hell this film really is anyway. You called a "fresh start", I've also heard reboot, "Bond Begins", and -to joke- the end of the franchise. So..

Frankly, I don't care. I hate origin stories, especially after the fact, so I welcome it.
