I came here months ago, hoping at that time Julian McMahon might be selected, , I found my love of Bond re-kindled and I am completely on board with the selection of Daniel Craig. I check back in now and again to find out how things are going with CR and was amused to see this thread-and the discussion of Bond 7!
I wish to point out that a number of actors I considered unsatisfactory Bonds were proposed, but I never assigned them personality traits or attributes of the characters they played, nor did I base my assessment of their acting skills on whether or not I liked them or thought them right for Bond.
McMahon likely appealed to Sony because he has been steadily employed in prime time television in the United States, in varied roles for the past 10 television seasons. Good looking actors are a dime a dozen in Hollywood and as are failed television pilots. To be constantly cast and to select projects that are actually aired for that period of time is a fairly unique achievement.
He worked on Profiler as a supporting cast member (where fellow cast member Robert Davi saw his Bond potential early on) on Charmed as a romantic lead, so popular with letter writing fans he was brought back from the dead-and in Nip/Tuck he is widely considered to be the breakout character. Charmed was/is not well written or brilliant television and yet McMahon left such an impression that he is character is still discussed on forums-and fans are hoping he will make a brief appearance in the series finale this year.
Nip/Tuck is produced by a team of folks that are regarded as the the next big things in Hollywood and known for their brilliant writing and casting. McMahon has received many good reviews from notoriously cynical American television critics.
I don't know him, but everything I have seen (interviews, behind the scenes, blogs from people working on N/T) would indicate he is charming, funny, well mannered, and good with fans.
In short, I don't think Julian McMahon is a terrible actor, nor smarmy or plastic. While I have been enthusiastically talking up Daniel Craig (I was the only one who knew who he was due to my time here) with movie buff friends encouraging them to rent Layer Cake and forget the connection to Jude and Sienna (kiss of death here in US)I saw Daniel's first interview with the major morning show, The Today Show and its perky anchor. Perhaps he was having a bad day, but he was surly and uncooperative and gave mocking answers. While I am still looking forward to his take on Bond, I couldn't help but think that somewhere a Sony flack was wishing they had selected that nice, charming Mr. McMahon instead....

He speaks american.
I don't want an actor to play Bond if he has to fake the accent.

Well, since he's Australian and sounds American to you, he seems to be able to do it rather well.
Thank you Chiclit for that amusing dissertation. As I've said before, whatever their relative merits as Bond, there is no doubt that Julian McMahon handles the press much better. I don't think Craig is doing himself any favours by being surly to the press and dismissive of the role.

Yes, but he IS Australian and has been speaking with that accent from his Home And Away days.
Brosnan spoke with an Irish accent, sometimes in his Bond movies. Is an Irish accent acceptable for your Bond?
Connery had a Scottish brogue.
Dalton has a twinge of Northern/Welsh.
Are you just against American accents?

Here's a teaser poster I did with McMahon as Bond back last year.

Gayer than back mounting cowboy.
Hmm, you must have a lot of experience to be able to develop such subtle gradations.
Ah, the ever sage Bon-san--a quick half bow in your direction.

He was a presenter at the Golden Globes on Monday. If anyone is interested in seeing how he deals with the press, I have the cutest little interview from the red carpet. Unfortunately, I have no way of uploading it but if someone else does I can forward it. Its about 6 megabytes.
He was a little tense during the presentation (understandably) but, unlike Craig, completely relazed in interviews.

McMahon ha Bond potential ,age is on his side,He looks good in a tux,he also has acting talent- so why not Bond.
I feel TWO actors have a good chance for landing james bond in the future -Julian McMahon and Henry Cavill. Most likely they will get the part if Craig departs in 5-7 years otherwise Julain may be out of the running if craig carries on for ten years which i think is very doubtful.

If Craig stays on for two more films, he will be Bond until 2009/10 at least. Another Bond will be readied at the earliest for 2012. And then McMahon will be too old for Bond.
So... McMahon only has one more chance: a Craig desaster. If CR fails McMahon could pull a Brosnan (replacing a too earnest actor, having lost the role because of TV commitment) and become Bond for 2008.
