Thought I'd throw out some comments to your post Loomis
I don't like the way it kicks off with the Rocky theme at full blast - tacky, and let's build some suspense first.
Have you watched the other Rocky trailers? They all begin like this. I like it actually, and I imagine when I'm sitting in theaters and this trailer pops up I'm going to get a huge grin on my face.
Also those B&W clips from ROCKY and ROCKY IV - cliched and unnecessary.
It's footage from Rocky Balboa, so I don't see what the big deal is.
And as for hitting those slabs of beef - it's just embarrassing. Is there also going to be a scene of the 60-something Balboa ice-skating with his new girlfriend, or mumbling at some terrapins?
I thought it was a nice homage to the first film, and realistically it makes sense. If it worked for Rocky in the 70's why shouldnt he train using similar methods?
Don't tell me he's also back collecting for Gazzo at the docks. I actually think the edited version of this trailer shown on US TV the other day makes the film look much cooler and more intelligent, and less cheesy.
Sadly the actor who played Tony Gazzo passed away quite a while ago, I don't think they're going to recast the character, and I don't think he was even in the film.
I know. I was only kidding, while doing a bit of the usual fanboy griping.

As for ROCKY V, I'd say it's easily the worst film of the series, and bear in mind that this is a series that also includes ROCKY IV.

Still, I don't hate it or pretend it doesn't exist (or fanwank it into a A BEAUTIFUL MIND prequel, for that matter) - I'm able to enjoy it if I'm in the right mood, and it
does have a few good moments. At the same time, it's hellishly dumb - yes, even by Rocky movie standards - and drops the ball unforgivably at times (the final fight is appallingly staged, shot and edited, the equivalent of making the badly-done parahawk sequence in TWINE the last major action scene of that film; and the soundtrack is embarrassing beyond belief, featuring MC Hammer as well as a truly buttock-clenching rap version of "Take You Back").
It also has some of the very worst performances I've ever seen. Ever. Tommy Morrison, Talia Shire, Sage Stallone, Burt Young and Richard Gant are just terrible. Decent acting (and I do mean just decent; it's a Rocky flick after all, and brilliance is not required) would alone have been enough to make the film's quality skyrocket. ROCKY V is really marred by its poor performances, to a degree unmatched by most movies. That said, the very flat direction and cinematography don't help matters.
On the plus side, Bill Conti's score is, as usual, great (I really hope he's doing ROCKY BALBOA - if not, it won't be the same without him, as ROCKY IV wasn't). The Mickey cameo was a truly insane idea, but somehow they managed to pull it off quite well. The story isn't too bad, and manages to survive a near-total lack of even the most basic logic, and there are a few very funny lines.
