Still about half a year (or more) to go before the release of this baby, but....

....THEY'VE ALREADY DONE A TEST SCREENING! :D

http://www.aintitcoo...ay.cgi?id=23349

Even in its current form it is 600 times better that Rocky V. There is some serious hope that this could be a very good or even great movie with some edits to it. No Mr. T cameo. No Talia Shire cameo. Fantastic performances by Stallone and Burt Young. Rocky and Paulie have some of the best scenes in the whole series in this movie.

We see the restaurant that Rocky owns, called "Adrian's" Spider Rico is a regular guest and Rocky lets him eat for free every time.

Oh, man, I'm seriously geeking out now. :D But back to discussing that James Bond movie they're making, what's the title again? With whatsisname, Cray? :D

Good news for Rocky fans that ROCKY BALBOA doesn't terribly suck.

I really doubt that it'll be a genuinely "great" film, though. Of the series entries, only ROCKY (1976) is a great film, and even then many would dispute that - its critical reputation is not especially high, and most cineastes labour under the delusion that TAXI DRIVER should have won Best Picture instead. I mean, no intellectual BFI type would be seen dead praising ROCKY.

I'll be enormously surprised - staggered - if ROCKY BALBOA even approaches the first one in quality.* Seems to be shaping up to be a slightly more "serious" and stylish ROCKY II (while basically rehashing the plot of ROCKY V). Interesting that Stallone and Young appear to be virtually carrying the film.

But that it's merely a decent movie (apparently), as opposed to yet another Stallone stinker, is a Rocky fan's wildest dream come true.

*But it does look as though it'll be one of the three or four best films Sly's done since ROCKY. Not that he's made all that many good films since ROCKY, of course, so the bar ain't exactly that high, but, still....

If it's as good as Rocky IV, i'd be happy. I don't expect much more than that and hope it isn't any worse than that.

"better than Rocky V"...sounds good enough to me. Rocky V is the only one I don't stay on if I'm channel surfing and come across a Rocky movie on tv  If its in the same ballpark, quality-wise as 3 or 4 then its a winner.

Clips of a new trailer are up:

http://www.aint-it-c...ay.cgi?id=23791

Looks really terrific. Well-shot (looks like they filmed in Panavision, which if so is a first for the series), and witty without being a wisecrack festival (Burt Young's "You haven't peaked yet?" is classic). The performances seem right on the money, and it looks as though the movie's quality stuff. Forget all fears of another ROCKY V.

I saw the preview with POTC 2. The whole audience universally groaned, and people were commenting that it looked dire. And this is in Philadelphia - Rocky's hometown!

I think this movie is going to bomb.

Yikes! I read a story about how, while shooting ROCKY V, there was a plan to give the famous statue from ROCKY III to the city of Philadelphia, with a presentation by Stallone, or something like that.... and absolutely no one turned up (shades of Spinal Tap's record signing).

I think this movie is going to bomb.

I think it'll be comfortably off, simply because it wasn't made for all that much, and it'll have the curiosity factor of "Can Sly cut it at 60?". I think it'll do decent "nostalgia" business for 30-somethings like myself, although I really do wonder whether it'll have much appeal to those in their teens or early 20s.

But then again, when it comes to Rocky I'm easily entertained :D

I might check it out, though I doubt anything could ever top the actual quality of the first one or the sheer wonderful cheesiness of parts 3 and 4.

Well, the teaser has hit the net, here's a direct Link to it.

It's actually a well put together teaser, and it really got me pumped up for the film. I can't believe people are actually scoffing at this in theaters.

LOL! :D Seriously, though, that trailer could be a lot, lot worse. And we've tolerated elderly Bonds, in the likes of NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN and A VIEW TO A KILL.

But just to pick it at a bit, I don't like the way it kicks off with the Rocky theme at full blast - tacky, and let's build some suspense first. Also those B&W clips from ROCKY and ROCKY IV - cliched and unnecessary. And as for hitting those slabs of beef - it's just embarrassing. Is there also going to be a scene of the 60-something Balboa ice-skating with his new girlfriend, or mumbling at some terrapins? Don't tell me he's also back collecting for Gazzo at the docks. I actually think the edited version of this trailer shown on US TV the other day makes the film look much cooler and more intelligent, and less cheesy.

Still, come on, this is the ROCKY VI trailer, for crying out loud. Does it have the right to be even half as good as it is? :D

Seems they have indeed shot this film in Panavision, which makes it the THUNDERBALL to ROCKY V's GOLDFINGER. *Ahem*

Hey Loomis, did you know that " Mason Dixon " lost his first post Rocky Fight to a Philly fighter, no less? Antonio Tarver lost a 12 decision to Bernard Hokins, who's sorta like a black middle weight amalgamation of Rocky and Clubber Lang(he went to prison, was a genuine baaaad man but had a seriously spartan discipline). So, Tarver lost to a philly fighter while a 3-1 favorite...and he musta lost his eye of the tiger too! :D

I dislike A VIEW TO A KILL a great deal, and the only reason I could get past it with NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN was that it was Sean Connery. The man's an unstoppable bastion of charisma and awesomeness, whether 30 or 80.

True. But to get those of us who aren't die-hard fans of the Rocky series, they're going to have to do a lot better than that. :D

So I'm told. He's a bum. :D

Now, see, Moore's age is one of the things I like most about AVTAK. I suspect that the same is true for many other "guilty pleasure" fans of the film.

But to get those of us who aren't die-hard fans of the Rocky series, they're going to have to do a lot better than that. :D

Unfortunately, I think you're right. :D There's nothing here to excite anyone outside the Rocky/Stallone fanbase, but hopefully that demographic is large enough and the reviews will be good enough for ROCKY BALBOA to be a modest hit. But I doubt it'll do even $100 million Stateside, not that anyone was expecting SUPERMAN RETURNS-/X3-style business.

Thought I'd throw out some comments to your post Loomis

Have you watched the other Rocky trailers? They all begin like this. I like it actually, and I imagine when I'm sitting in theaters and this trailer pops up I'm going to get a huge grin on my face.

Also those B&W clips from ROCKY and ROCKY IV - cliched and unnecessary.

It's footage from Rocky Balboa, so I don't see what the big deal is.

And as for hitting those slabs of beef - it's just embarrassing. Is there also going to be a scene of the 60-something Balboa ice-skating with his new girlfriend, or mumbling at some terrapins?

I thought it was a nice homage to the first film, and realistically it makes sense. If it worked for Rocky in the 70's why shouldnt he train using similar methods?

Don't tell me he's also back collecting for Gazzo at the docks. I actually think the edited version of this trailer shown on US TV the other day makes the film look much cooler and more intelligent, and less cheesy.

Sadly the actor who played Tony Gazzo passed away quite a while ago, I don't think they're going to recast the character, and I don't think he was even in the film.

I took away more from this trailer than you did apparently, but then again I'm not ashamed to say that I enjoyed all five (yes, even five) Rocky films :D

I suppose those of you who dismiss Rocky V can pretend it doesnt exist. Because this one (Rocky Balboa) won't pick up at the end of the fifth one like the other sequels did.

I know. I was only kidding, while doing a bit of the usual fanboy griping. :D

As for ROCKY V, I'd say it's easily the worst film of the series, and bear in mind that this is a series that also includes ROCKY IV. :D Still, I don't hate it or pretend it doesn't exist (or fanwank it into a A BEAUTIFUL MIND prequel, for that matter) - I'm able to enjoy it if I'm in the right mood, and it does have a few good moments. At the same time, it's hellishly dumb - yes, even by Rocky movie standards - and drops the ball unforgivably at times (the final fight is appallingly staged, shot and edited, the equivalent of making the badly-done parahawk sequence in TWINE the last major action scene of that film; and the soundtrack is embarrassing beyond belief, featuring MC Hammer as well as a truly buttock-clenching rap version of "Take You Back").

It also has some of the very worst performances I've ever seen. Ever. Tommy Morrison, Talia Shire, Sage Stallone, Burt Young and Richard Gant are just terrible. Decent acting (and I do mean just decent; it's a Rocky flick after all, and brilliance is not required) would alone have been enough to make the film's quality skyrocket. ROCKY V is really marred by its poor performances, to a degree unmatched by most movies. That said, the very flat direction and cinematography don't help matters.

On the plus side, Bill Conti's score is, as usual, great (I really hope he's doing ROCKY BALBOA - if not, it won't be the same without him, as ROCKY IV wasn't). The Mickey cameo was a truly insane idea, but somehow they managed to pull it off quite well. The story isn't too bad, and manages to survive a near-total lack of even the most basic logic, and there are a few very funny lines.

I always admired Rocky V for the story it tried to tell, and also for trying to break out of the formula that Stallone almost got trapped with in Rocky IV. The story is'nt the greatest though, I never liked the way they "all of a sudden" turned Rocky into a bum again, this is a man who was the world heavy weight champion, and just like that he's a bum again, doesnt seem right.

Ironic you think the direction is flat (never cared for it myself) because Stallone got the director of the first film to do (what at the time was considered) the last.

The trailer looks great! The real-life Dixon just got beat by a 40 year old fighter, and George Foreman won the heavyweight title at 45... so why can't Balboa at 50-something? hehe. Stallone is 58 in real life I think, although they'll probably fudge that number a bit for the purposes of the movie. I'm looking forward to it a hell of a lot more than Casino Royale.

You know, I was just thinking this morning how I liked that they are calling this movie Rocky Balboa instead of ROCKY VI...and then today I see what appears to be the teaser poster. I have to say, I really don't ike this poster. With the title change, the America flag, and Rocky victory pose, it just looks like another bad Rocky sequel.

Posted Image

I think this may be the real teaser:

http://www.apple.com...gm/rockybalboa/

Gotta say, I think it's about as boring a poster as they could possibly have come up with. Sure, it's only the teaser, but still.... Rubbish tagline, too (wonder whether they'll use Lenny Kravitz's rather good old hit song by the same name as this movie's "Eye of the Tiger"? Probably not, but it'd be an excellent choice for the soundtrack).

Very disappointing. If that's all the effort they're going to put into the teaser poster, why even bother? Oh, and is keeping the name "Sylvester Stallone" off posters now seen as a shrewd marketing move? :P :) :P

I just hope we get to hear:

We're not indestructible,
baby better get that straight
I think it's unbelievable
how you give into the hands of fate

Some things are worth fighting for some
feelings never die
I'm not askin' for another chance
I just wanna know why

There's no easy way out there's no shortcut
There's no easy way out givin' in can't be wrong

I don't wanna pasify you
I don't wanna drag you down
but I'm feelin like a prisoner
like a stranger in a no named town

I see all the angry faces
afraid that could be you and me
talkin about what might have been
I'm thinkin about what I used to be

there's no easy way out there's no shortcut home
ther's no easy way out givin' in can't be wrong

Baby, baby we can shed this skin
we can know how we feel inside
instead of goin' down and endless road
not knowin if we're dead or alive

some things are worth fightin for
some feelings never die
I'm not askin for another chance
I just wanna know why

there's no easy way out there's no shortcut home
there's no easy way out givin in givin in can't be wrong no
there's no easy way out there's no shortcut home
there's no easy no easy no easy way out

(repeat and fade)

:)

Superb song that!! One of my all-time favourites. In fact, the montage car scene in the film using that music is great too (one of the best bits in all 5 films).
