BABEL - apparently a film fashioned specifically to appeal to Independent readers (why, I wonder, is the paper called The Independent when it's fundamentally and stridently left-wing?), but I won't hold that against it. Admittedly, it's little more than "a visual feast", but this is definitely a case of savouring at Sardi's, as Mr Benson would put it.
HOSTEL - clever, blackly funny and as gripping as they come. It's really an action thriller, and a damn good one: imagine ALIENS as directed by Peter Jackson circa BAD TASTE. Not for the squeamish (then again, it's nowhere near as mindblowingly graphic as it's made out to be), but the true horror lies offscreen, in the sickening suspicion that, if the small business depicted in the film really existed, it would thrive thanks to plenty of outwardly "normal" customers.
NOTES ON A SCANDAL - a sort of genteel FATAL ATTRACTION without the gore. Or the entertainment value. One of those supposedly "worthy" films that's actually insubstantial and sometimes downright silly. Dench is pretty good, but that's about it. Can't figure out for the life of me why I bought it, but, well, you can't win 'em all.
SUPERMAN RETURNS - the best superhero flick since Donner's Supes. And that's all I have to say on the matter.
