Since someone else started out playing devil's advocate .... Why do the choices have to be narrowed down? Since it looks like the "rumours" the press were printing about Craig were true (even though were "denied"), isn't possible other rumours are true? If that's the case then there is no end to the number of possible candidates.

Exactly.

Reading through this thread, and navigating the serpentine, Chinese-box logic therein, I got the sensation of watching a man in solitary confinement talk himself into delirium.

All I've heard from Eon and Sony is: no decision has been made yet in regards to casting James Bond. NONE of the other media sources have any level of reliability (save zencat :) , who says he hears it's wide open). One or more of the reported rumours could be true. But I have no way of knowing which, if any, are true.

So it seems to me that there are a great many possibilities. None of which are known to any but the ultimate insiders.

I guess fans are free to speculate away. But my eyebrows raise when I hear that "because of formula XYZ, it's definitely down to ......."

Personally, I think it's going to end up being Bale. Because.............

Wow, that must have been awful for you, Bon-san. Flippin' heck, if you're having a go at Bond geeks getting carried away with Bond Actor 6 speculation, isn't that a bit "pots and kettles" given that you've been posting on this site for quite a while and have contributed (enthusiastically and of your own free will, I believe, rather than as a result of someone putting a gun to your head to make you check out what the pasty-skinned and wifeless were currently convincing their tiny little minds of) to threads of speculation like this one?

I thought this thread worth starting because of Craig's own comments (as reported at the site I link to in my first post) - for the first time, here was something suggesting Craig was indeed a very serious candidate. Something quoted and apparently concrete, not just an actor standing on a red carpet and grinning while saying "I'm very busy", or something like that. The Bond search may indeed be wide open, as zencat says, but don't forget that zencat also said a while back that he was told that the Craig stories were complete rubbish - and now there's this, which seems to show that they're not.

Anyway, if don't like, don't read, etc. No one here's claiming Craig's definitely going to be starring in CASINO ROYALE, or making other assertions that would suggest "delirium" - not even me.

OUCH!

I've been given the old "if you don't like it, don't read it" AND the even more serious "No one's holding a gun to your head."!!!

I guess I had it coming, after my little spiel.

Look, here's the thing. I can't help reading every last Casino Royale thread. And last night, as the result of a certain "saturation effect", I entered some sort of analytical vortex. Sent me into a bit of a state. Made me say things. Apologies all around if I made any advances towards anyone's sister.

I'm happy to report that watching 4 hours of televised yoga has brought me almost all the way back to reality.

Signed,

The Pot

P.S. The Doctor has advised that I not read any more CR threads.*

And apologies if I come across as too defensive of this here Craig thread of mine - having typed all this drivel, I'd like to think he's at least a realistic finalist and not just some gleam in a fanboy's or tabloid journalist's eye.

Anyway, enough geek-on-geek verbal violence. It's how The Man (Eon) keeps us down. :)

Maybe we are only half right about this Daniel Craig stuff. Maybe it is Daniel...Radcliffe. Yeah, he is waiting until he is too old for Potter, and then he is going to head across town and become Bond at the start of his career. Brilliant.

Check these quotes on ITV.com today(yes spynovelfan, this time it is from today :) ) by Daniel Craig about Bond:

"I'm in the running apparently which is good and I don't know what the answer to it is because I mean, unless there's a deal on the table, I wouldn't want to talk about it and probably if there was a deal on the table, I wouldn't be able to talk about it. So it's sort of a grey area but I would give it serious consideration if it came along."

This clearly hints Craig is still under active consideration and not just in the past.

Okay: RUMOR ALERT!!

From what I have heard, Daniel Craig is already signed - it was Clive Owen till the oscar nom and the globe. Then he got some big offers and said no to Bond (something about 'typecasting'). Well, Sony then wanted Brosnan and they got a deal with him till EON put thier two cents in and said no. Babs then went for thier 2nd choice, Craig. He signed a few weeks back and has been told to keep quiet till something happens.

There you have it. I got this from someone claiming to have family within the organisation - if you know what I mean.
I don't know the guy personally, but I have reason to believe he's on the level.

Make of it what you want.

Interesting. Seems very believable indeed, all fits together, explains a few things like the "Broz back?" rumour and Owen's humming and hawing.... yeah, it's looking good for Craig. :)

I have to say that this does sound like a very logical sequence of events, and it makes sense that, since it looks like nothing's going on as far as actual work on CR, that Daniel Craig is just waiting in the wings waiting to be announced.

One question for Martin Mystery: Is it possible that an announcement could come either just before or sometime soon after the U.S. release of Layer Cake regarding Daniel Craig's being cast in the role if it is indeed him? Thanks.

Well, he's not doing a *superb* job of that, is he?

"I'm in the running apparently which is good and I don't know what the answer to it is because I mean, unless there's a deal on the table, I wouldn't want to talk about it and probably if there was a deal on the table, I wouldn't be able to talk about it. And that's about the third interview in which he's kept about as quiet as a Who concert about the subject - right after he denied the thing flat-out.

He should have just said he was going to be busy for a while.

To be fair though, perhaps he would have kept quiet - totally quiet - if The Sun hadn't leaked it. If you're gonna blame anyone, blame The Currant Bun, says I. OTOH, you're right, Craig could indeed have been a teeny bit more tight-lipped.

tdalton: Your guess is as good as mine. It's not like Eon/Sony could capitalize on the publicity surrounding LAYER CAKE as it's only released in LA and New York.

On the other hand, LAYER CAKE (excellent film, by the way!) would certainly benefit from the Bond-connection - and this could explain why this rumor is spreading right now. So, if what I've been told turns out to be BS - we all know why.

But, as I said before - I believe it.

You're 100% correct, Loomis. He was keeping it quiet for a while, if indeed he has been chosen, and all the tabloids and newspapers hounding him about it probably got under his skin and he felt as though he had to address it. Or, maybe someone at Sony/EON gave him the option of discussing it vaguely as long as he didn't give away too much. Who knows, anything's possible at this stage in the game.

I am dying to see the media blitz that Eon/Sony are going to have to come with to explain Craig to the general audience: "Daniel Craig is James Bond, 007 ... Seriously, he has a great personality!"

If its true then I'm happy.

If Craig has in fact signed for the role, then I think that it would be wise for EON to get all the publicity photoshoots of him doing the Bond poses with the gun and the tux and get that done quickly to try to convince Craig's vocal detractors that he could play the part and to get that image out to the general public who knows little about this before they see some of the pictures that Craig's detractors are using to illustrate why, in their minds, he shouldn't be Bond.

MM, can you confirm that Babs first started thinking seriously about Craig as a candidate after reading the following two posts on CBN?

Spynovelfan's Outlandish Theory Number 6,789:

Owen had been in and out of talks with EON for a long time, but has always stressed he would want to do something a little different than the last few films, and take it back to basics. EON were afraid that this might jeopardise the franchise (see Dalton, Timothy). But Owen's stock was raised by King Arthur - sure, sure, but it's a major movie and he's the star of it - and by Closer. Support has been gathering for him, as it did with Brosnan. And Martin Campbell was a compromise - he knows Owen, wants to direct him as Bond, and woiuld come back to do just that. But he's also very commercial, and launched Brosnan with GoldenEye to their satisfaction. With Campbell in place, EON is sure it won't 'go Dalton'. With Campbell and CR, Owen's up for it (or with CR and Owen, Campbell's up for it).

I really think it's going to be Owen. Jackman is someone who people pn the street around the world recognise from X-Men. Owen does not have that. Jackman is way out of the running since he announced his massive multi-picture deal with Disney a couple of weeks ago: http://www.smh.com.a...l?oneclick=true

It could be someone like Purefoy or Gruffudd, but it'll be a shame to have a pretty boy in this film. I think Owen is actually pretty much between the Moore and Dalton camps. He's not Daniel Craig.

:) Can I just ask what people who didn't want Owen in the role because he was too thuggish, ugly, cruel and uncommercial are now thinking about Mr Owen? Just to remind you how ugly and uncommercial Owen looks:

That's why I've had a real hard time embracing the notion of Craig as Bond. I just cannot imagine any Sony execs looking favorably upon the marketing possibilities of Daniel Craig.

Far stranger things have happened, of course. And we could do much worse than Craig, I suppose.

Gut instinct though, says Daniel Craig is not Bond #6.

And I just cannot imagine anyone in the world thinking there's no issue with Craig's looks when it comes to his suitability for Bond.

Even those of us who'd welcome him as 007 have serious reservations about his appearance, it would seem.
