Daniel Craig a serious contender after all?

He does not look anything like James Bond and I fear would alienate a huge fan base.
Well, I won't disagree with that - heck, I think there are very few who would. However, I think it's safe to say that - stunningly - Craig is (or was) a very serious contender for the Bond role after all.
"It was a surreal time to have the studio phoning you up saying you've got the job...." Seems Sony (or would it have been MGM? Never mind) actually offered him the role. Which is something I find very exciting, because it suggests that the studio is prepared to take pretty darn huge risks with the franchise. But, surprisingly, it contradicts earlier rumours that Sony favoured Brosnan or Owen, with Eon wanting Craig. Y'know, conservative big studio that just wants to push out product pandering to the lowest common denominator, versus "indie" production company with artistic integrity (Eon). Sony not only pushing for Craig but actually telling him the job was his is definitely not the way you'd have expected it to go. I thought that Craig was, at best, the preferred candidate of Broccoli and/or Wilson, and that Sony wouldn't even entertain the idea of sinking hundreds of millions of dollars into launching this - I'm sorry - less-than-incredibly-handsome guy as James Bond over a series of would-be blockbusters. Seems I was wrong. Glad I was.

But are we sure he was in the running for Bond? It could have been another role.
Granted, but let's have another look at Craig's words:
Daniel Craig spoke at length about the Casino Royale rumors. "It was a surreal time to have the studio phoning you up saying you've got the job and then the Broccolis saying nothing. ... I just let it go. I'm a big believer that if they want you

Sounds like the new MGM is really trying to run the show without much imput from Mike and Barb! I was under the impression it was the other way round, Barbara was keen on Craig, but MGM wasn't. Oh, well. Cubby had trouble finding Moore replacements several times. If only he were here now, I think we'd have our Bond.....and a new film every TWO years.
I would have assumed it was Babs pushing for Craig as well if they know each other (although knowing each other socially doesn't really mean that much - unless you have very dirty mind). Either way, my understanding was that Eon propose the actor and MGM/Sony have to agree, not the other way around. But I guess that in real life anything goes.

Well, some people seem to think he's a looker. At the BAFTAs, Stephen Fry as host said Craig's face "has been designated as a state of natural beauty, which means you should sit on it... and have a picnic..." And he was going out with Kate Moss until not so long ago. Not that she has any taste. But yes, he's not quite in Brozzer's Freeman's catalogue model bracket. He looks brutal:

Yeah, look at Pete Doherty.
From that photo you've just put up, and quite a few others, I find it nothing less than astonishing that Craig was even considered for Bond, never mind actually offered the role. But he was, so there we are.

Equally astonished.

Okay, I actually quite like the guy for the part, which is why I suggested him. And I think he could do a great job. Which is why I hadn't yet posted the following. Are you ready for the scariest Daniel Craig picture on the internet?
'The name's Bond. Seriously [censored]ed up Bond.'
Come on - here he looks like a beaten up Connery Bond! Daniel Craig is a different kind of Bond but more like Fleming

And I don't think he looks too old, Loomis! As this shot from a LAYER CAKE press conference last week proves:
*Snickers like Beavis and Butt-Head*
"This guy's weird-looking."
"Uhhhh.... is this James Bond Triple-X?"
"Bond's never been triple-X, dude. It isn't even R."
"Then it sucks!"
"Why is this guy like.... old?"
"Never mind, there's plenty of explosions and babes. Huh huh huh huh."
Tell you what, though: I plan on watching LAYER CAKE this evening on DVD (my first viewing of a Craig film, I think) - will try to do so with an open mind and will report back with my views on Craig as Bond.

If this ends up happening how about Kate Moss as a Bond Girl.

For what it's worth--Did anyone hear that today the Sun newspaper is reporting that Daniel Craig has been offered a 3 film deal by Barbara Broccoli and will be signed up formally in a couple of weeks. They go on to say that Clive Owen was told casting agents he didn't want the role of Bond BUT Barbara was said to be already leaning towards Daniel Craig as Bond.

I can't find anything on The Sun's site, Seannery - do you have a link?
And Moss as a Bond girl? Why the heck not? She's gorgeous. And maybe Primal Scream could do a song for CASINO ROYALE (Bobby Gillespie is another guy who's been linked with Moss).

Today? Are you sure you don't mean their story on April 6, when they reported that Daniel Craig had been offered a 3 film deal by Barbara Broccoli and would be signed up formally in a couple of weeks? Which is why we're all discussing him in the first place?

I'm looking forward to your report. He has one big advantage over Owen - he sounds like he might want the job.Tell you what, though: I plan on watching LAYER CAKE this evening on DVD (my first viewing of a Craig film, I think) - will try to do so with an open mind and will report back with my views on Craig as Bond.
