Well, is there anything else you would like to discuss regarding this film? Do you have another review in the works?

We could discuss forever, you know, but perhaps we would better keep our energy to discuss about movies of which we disagree, like... The spy who loved me, for if it's your favorite, we'll surely disagree... :P

My next review will be From Russia with love, and I'll post it monday or tuesday.

Dr. No isn't on my list of favorites, either. However, it does have its moments, and Connery does enough to keep me interested.

Frankly, I was more impressed by Jack Lord and John Kitzmiller. I'm sorry, but whenever those two shared a scene with Connery, they made him look like an amateur.

They were terrific as well. The entire cast of Dr. No is excellent in my opinion.

I will be on the lookout for your FRWL review. Let's move on from Dr. No. Again, very nice review.

8/10 - Highly recommended

Pros:
Great atmosphere - not only in lush tropical settings, but in odder, more surrealistic moments at No's base.
Terence Young does the cinematic Bond a real service by giving him a sense of sardonic humor that the literary version lacked.
Very hard-boiled - Dent's killing is brutal, but not pointlessly so.
This is the most satisfyingly erotic Bond film. Most of the other films are either coy about sex, or overly vulgar (TB, DAD).
Mostly very strong supporting cast (Lord and Wise especially).

Cons:
Not too many, but Bond at times seems a bit too much like a detective from a Raymond Chandler novel.
Peter Hunt's crash editing at times adds speed to scenes, but often comes across as clumsy (with too many frames missing).
Apart from the Bond theme and "Underneath the Mango Tree", Norman's score is rubbish.

I'm afraid I can't agree with that either.

If your viewing Dr. No for the first time and after seeing the more recent ones, this first film is bound to seem dated to younger eyes. As many people have alresdy stated it set the standard for not just future Bond films but practically every action/adventure film from then on. The fast cutting and editing were ground breaking. The use of sound was emphasised also so the simple breaking of a window seamed more exiting than it other wise would have been. The colour and Jamacan setting also make Dr. No a main feature, not the B movie it would proberbly have become in the hands of any other Producers. Most film makers would have just shot on the back lot and added some stock footage of palm trees and islands and a welcome to Jamaca sign. While Goldfinger would be the Bond film by which all others would be judged (DN & FRWL i think took more money on re-release after Goldfinger)it,s contribution to the series and film making cannot be stated enough.

Drop it Professor i,m behid you.

This is very true, and we need to always remember this when watching Dr No. It also has a very mysterious opening, with the Jamaican "blind guy" assasins.

All I can really say about Dr. No is that it's like 'Bond Beta'. Connery performs well here, a bit colder than in his other outings, but nevertheless a great start. The same can't really be said for Ursula Andress, though. Her character is rather shallow, almost like a damsel in distress rather than an ally. And the titular villain is portrayed beautifully by Joseph Wiseman.

Really, it's a good movie on its own, but it feels like, like I said, 'Bond Beta'.

My favourite of the Connery era, simply as it's a solid Fleming thriller adapted fo the silver screen.

It's not trying to set a standard or copy a forumla as other Bonds started to do over the years, but this is so simple in the elements it uses, it never over-does it or tries to out-do anything.

It's a solid piece of filming for the early 60s, and it looks good and has a strong cast to send us on a fast paced thriller. I say thriller as this is the tone of the film rather than an action film, something I miss in later Bond films. Here, Connery is at his best as a secret agent who is top class in espionage. We see the tricks he uses to monitor his apartment, and his skill at combat in all fields and his sophistication as a gentleman and coldness as a killer. His template for Bond changed over his films, but I feel 'Dr.No' is Bond at this best for many years.

Connery looks good, the music fits the film perfectly and it's a solid start for Bond, and because of this it's easy to see why audiences want it 50 years later.

Plus we have the first taste of the James Bond theme and that works in any context.

The thing I like most about Dr. No is also the thing I miss most in the Bond series today. It is less about action and more about espionage and detective work. It's a high-tech story (for 1962 anyway) with low-tech investigating. I guess it's one of the things that I like most about Skyfall. It also involves a high-tech story with (at least in Bond's case) low-tech investigating. Silva also rivals Dr. No as one of the most charismatic villains. To me Skyfall feels like a 21st century version of Dr. No.

Yeah I like Dr. No for several reasons, I mean it is more about detective work, there is action but it's still enjoyable to watch. My favorite Connery one is From Russia With Love. I rated Dr. No a 7/10.

Such as classic..........a simple story with a evil villain, Bond girl, ally, and henchman........no silly gadget or anything like that......Bond using his skills to investigate and learn what happens to his fellow agent.  The first Bond movie ever made may not be action packed which make the movie great and among the best of Connery after From Russia with love.........need more story and less action that is what Bond is about 10/10
