Spectre Assassin - aside from the usual sound advice to read the books in order I really enjoyed the Nicholas Meyer (yes of Star Trek fame) Holmes novel The Seven Percent Solution

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Seven Per Cent Solution, The Return of Sherlock Holmes and The Valley of Fear are all excellent.Hello all, I'm barely come to appreciate the work of Sherlock Holmes, and want to get started at reading. Which book do any of you reccommend me reading first?

I'm glad I am not the only fan to recommend The Seven Per Cent Solution!

Mine are 'Valley of Fear', 'Study in Scarlett' and 'The Scandal in Bohemia'!
My favourite Holmes actors are:
Jeremy Brett
Ian Richardson
Peter Cushing (Who was the best Van helsing, but that is another matter!)
Christopher Lee (AKA Scaramanger, the best Dracula and Saruman, he is good in everything)
Matt Frewer (Max Headroom)
Basil Rathbone (Would have been better except he was in daft films)
I didn't mind Rupert Everet except he pronounce Lestrade wrong, its pronounced La-Strard not Le-strade!
I think Julian Glover would have made a great Holmes, what do you guys and gals think, hmm?

Didn't realise that Meyer had written another Holmes related novel.I must second DLibrsnow's approval of 'The Seven Percent Solution' and I rather enjoyed Meyer's 'Canary Trainer' as well. As I recall, it featured Holmes in turn of the century Paris and tied heavily into 'Phantom of The Opera'. Meyer definitely knows his Holmes and I would love to see both another literary and cinematic offering from the man.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a hardcover, first edition, at 'Spenser's Mystery Books' in Boston, many years ago. I may have a copy of 'The West End Horror' around here somewhere, but my memory is fuzzy on whether or not I've read it.
I swear I have been far too busy lately!! My mind is mush!! I just walked over to my Holmes shelf and low and behold, 'The West End Horror' is indeed on my shelf, right next to 'The Canary Trainer'!! I've found the Amazon writeup on 'West End Horror' as well and it jogged my memory enough to confirm that I have indeed read it and recall it fondly!! Ya would think I were 83, not 33...then, it is early in the morning as I type this. Here's the link to 'West End Horror': The West End Horror

I have all three books, signed first editions hardcovers -- of course!
Cool that Gardner is doing another Moriarty book. Maybe this is a good excuse to put something Holmes related on the CBn main page.

I have been a big Holmes afficionado since I was twelve. I still remember going to the cinema as a kid, and being scared to death by MURDER BY DECREE starring Christopher Plummer and James Mason (Great film, by the way).
However, my favorite actor to portray Holmes is the late Jeremy Brett. He was in a league of his own.
OK, with the way the James Bond franchise is going these days (young James Bond books and movies ) - I just may chose to look to good old Sherlock when I need my regular dose of escapism.
I can't wait to see Rupert Everett's portrayal of Sherlock - but, as I live in Denmark I'll probably have to wait for the dvd - does anybody know if a release date has been announced yet?
Thanks!

Damn! I forgot Private Life. I;d better go and edit my post.
Tsk tsk....I think Murder by Decree is a fine Holmes movie, but there is no Holmes movie out there that comes close to eclipsing The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes IMO.
I only wish the studio hadn't butchered it before release. By all accounts director Billy Wilder cried when he saw what the studio had done to his movie.
