Although would have preferred McTiernan.

Pierce Brosnan tells Moviehole that he's still plugging away on trying get a sequel to "The Thomas Crown Affair" up. And if it doesn't happen this year, the former James Bond is prepared to walk from the project.
''We are full steam ahead'', Brosnan says of "Topkapi". ''Full steam ahead. If we do not have it by this year, then we shall just say we gave a best effort. But Mary Parent is a magnificent supporter of the piece. Mr. Paul Verhoeven is still with us as a director and we have great executives over there at MGM now, who are passionate to make this film. So, we have a fabulous writer.''
Hate to say this, but the film business is much more oriented towards the youth market than ever before. No one wants to see a 56-year old thief. They'd rather see Mike Vogel or Leonardo DiCaprio. That's why they bounced Pierce in the first place. If he was younger (or younger-looking) I'd be willing to believe that the path of the Bond films after DAD might have been different. Still Bourne-like maybe but not necessarily a reboot. And with Pierce in it.
If it does happen, it won't be with Pierce. That's almost for certain.
That's not true. Look what Verhoeven did for Michael Douglas in Basic Instinct. Pierce is a great actor, still sexy to a large proportion of the population (would you argue that Sean couldn't carry a movie at that age? - Even now?). That said, PV is working on Azazel now so it'll be awhile. But I hope it happens. With him at the helm.

As I wrote earlier, it's a much different market now. Youth rules.

They better have him wearing a tuxedo with an undone tie, as well.

I'm close to giving up on it. Not because of Brozza's age or the "poor" box office of TTCA. But because he's either sat on the pot for too long or the gods are against him. I read today that THE BRAZILIAN JOB will reunite Mark Wahlberg and Jason Statham, et al. They're younger, cooller--and, let's be honest, faster on the draw.
The Brazilian Job???? Are they going to be wearing skimpy bikinis?

The movie should be hair raising!

I found the the Thomas Crown Affair rather boring, to tell the truth, so I never finished watching it. It would take something really special to make me see a second film.
I'd really like to see Pierce get some Liam Neeson-ish revival as an action man, Taken-style. It would be wonderful to see him work in that genre as a very different type of character than 007. Maybe he should contact Luc Besson.
Off topic I know, but did anybody see Butterfly on a Wheel? Worth catching on DVD? The reviews I saw were pretty bad, but it looked interesting judging from the trailers.

It's worth a gander if you're a Brosnan fan. It's an average suspense thriller with one twist too many for its own good, but it's got some solid performances, particularly from Pierce as the baddie.Off topic I know, but did anybody see Butterfly on a Wheel? Yeah, it's been 10 years since the first film, and I also found it to be rather uninteresting. Give up on this one and move on.I found the the Thomas Crown Affair rather boring, to tell the truth, so I never finished watching it. It would take something really special to make me see a second film.

I might want to check it out just to see the guy playing a villain. I think he keeps improving as an actor.
The fact that it went straight to DVD in many countries despite having a good cast of big names might not be a good sign, though.

I also agree that you should check it out. Brozza gives a terrific performance, though the film itself goes hither and thither in terms of quality. All the proof you'll need that he needs a new agent--imo, he's got the chops but his talent's being squandered.

I recently watched The Matador again. What a great performance he delievers in that one. He should do more comedy, he certainly has the talent. It's the kind of movie Roger should have done post AVTAK, to show his comedic chops.
By the way, did they ever get Angelina Jolie to sign on for The Topkapi Affair (that's an awful title, BTW)?

I'm sure it doesn't indicate anything, but there's an interesting DVD collection coming to Australia this September, featuring both Thomas Crown films and Topkapi.
EzyDVD sometimes advertise such collections only to have them materialize as a "3 DVD deal" of individual DVDs rather than a dedicated boxset. Time will tell.

"We've got the fourth script in and this is the closest we've gotten in structure to making sense. It's very very hard. Now we have the character, it's not really fleshed out, so we have to work on him, Mr. Crown, and her, Miss Moore, another affair, more art, but it has to be an unexpected surprise."

The corpse that is The Thomas Crown Affair II continues to twitch. Doing the junkets for Remember Me, Pierce Brosnan says...

I hope that Angelina Jolie doesn't take the role. I think Charlize Theron would be better by a mile!
Don't worry, I'm sure Angelina will be far too old for the role once this film finally gets off the ground

Poppycock. It's not that hard. Get a couple of talented writers...lock them in a room with all the cigs and booze they need...and force them to write till they bleed. But focus and commitment first--this is starting to smack of something that no one has a clue about or is completely committed to making.

I agree, building Hadrian's Wall took less time.

Part of the problem, imo, is that over-reverential toward a film that was admirably good but, let's face it, no contemporary classic. Just treat the damn thing as a caper, not the second crowning jewel on Brozza's career.

The real problem is surely more this: MGM cannot finance this either...
I knew there had to be an upside to the MGM troubles.
