Casino Royale when his heart stopped.

Probably is the closest. But when I look at this thread, I always think of Grant saving Bond at the gypsy camp in FRWL.

I think he came pretty close in Goldfinger - what with that laser stopping so close to the meat and two veg.

FRWL, as I believe Fleming at the time wasn't going to write any more Bond books, but left a cliffhanger just in case.

In the films I'd say OHMSS is the first time you see him resigned to death just before Tracy finds him.

This scene strikes me as the closest in the novels as well (even though he did nearly die in FRWL, he isn't resigned to it as he is in OHMSS). I think the fact that he basically is ready to go makes this the closest.. at least he's fighting his way through in the others (although CR might be the physical closest).

Poor James, he has had a rough go of it :D

When was Bond closest to death? I would say Die Another Day... as in the entire movie. :D

DAF cremation and FYEO rope hanging always strike me as the two most dangerous bits for Bond. There's no way he could have got out of that coffin!

True - the DAF coffin was a very close call.

Right, that's my thinking as well. Cinematically, I can't see anything being closer than that moment in CR. In the books, I'd say the same about the FRWL ending.
