That's quite an understatement.Ahhh... I get it... since TWINE is not that well liked on these boards...
Was a joke by me about the movie.
You mean, because the movie was terrible or because of what happened to Bond in the movie?Has anyone mentioned when he starred in The World Is Not Enough?

When has Bond been closest to death?

How so DLibra?I think Bond was closest to death during the playing of DOMINATION in Never Say Never Again.

He could have letten go anytime.

That's definitely the worst situation he's been in. There is no way he could have got out of there by himself.I think Sean Connery in Diamonds Are Forever. When he is placed in the coffin by Wint and Kidd and then left and stuck in there to die, there really seems to be nothing he can do to free himself. It all comes by the lucky help of someone else.

However, in terms of how much I really believed Bond might die (even though, obviously, one is always aware that will most certainly not happen) Bond hanging on for dear life in Licence To Kill with Dario about to cut him off is probably when I was most 'on the edge of my seat', part of the reason why Licence To Kill is one of my favourite pictures.
As for the literary Bond, I entirely concur with Tarl's point about Icebreaker having just read it. A brutal, and brilliant, scene.

Sometimes I wonder how he made it... well probably because he is James Bond...

True point. I overlooked that one. No such help there really, other than luck that his rope would hold and he could beat Apostis.I think Bond has been closest to death in For Your Eyes Only when he is climbing up to Kristatos secret hideout. He only had this rope to hold him. And Bond seemed to be doing a major effort to climb up. That scene had me on the edge of the sofa the first time I saw the movie...

The capture and torture by the North Koreans for 14 months would have seriously pushed Bond near death. Constant bashings, drenched with high pressure hose, poisoned with scorpion venom, held underwater in a tank for long periods, AND it alludes to hot coals being used.
After all this they say that Brosnan's Bond was weak. He was truly defiant to the last!

In the books, it's definitely the end of FRWL. Just a little more poison in Rosa's shoe and it's goodnight James!

In the books, definitely gotta be the end of FRWL. (Oh how I wish they'd end a Bond movie that way!)

Let's see, the laser cutting scene in GF. The scene where he's hanging out the back of the plane at the end of TLD. The grinder in LTK. Diving into the plane in the beginning of GE. The scene where he's trying to stop the airport bomber in CR, I don't know why, but I didn't think James would pull that one off (even it's in like the middle of the movie and he obviously wouldn't get killed

I'd say when a 60 year old Roger Moore had to sit helplessly in bed, watching as Grace Jones disrobes before him.

How about the PTS in MR. No really, now think about it? Being pushed out of an airplane with no parachute?
I agree totally. An appalling situation. If we're talking film, the MR PTS and the DAF near- cremation win it for me.
Books? The squid in Dr No springs to mind for some reason, despite the situation being too ludicrous to take anywhere near seriously. I'd happily read a novel telling the story of Dr No's Captain Nemo/Ahab-like hunt and capture of the elusive giant squid. How DID he do it?
And the Bentley's collision with the giant roll of paper in the Moonraker novel had a particularly strong whiff of near death about it.
I couldn't bring myself to abbreviate the book titles for some reason.

Seriously , there's no way in hell he'd manage to hold the rope for that long in AVTAK...how many minutes was it from the mine to GG bridge (after about 2 mins he'd be a goner...lol

...it was still more down to Earth (pun intended) than MR , though
