As for the recent James Bond scores, I don't like the decision to give recording artists free-reign to compose and score title songs without collaborating with the film's main composer. Remember a time when James Bond films had a musical theme that was heard throughout the picture? I think that these themes were key to unifying the entire picture.

I couldn't have put it better myself. That is definitely one of the key elements to a James Bond score, and what the scores since "Living Daylights" have lacked. If it is indeed Arnold who does "21", then he should incorporate whatever the theme is into the score.

Think he's capable?

I think so. He just didn't have a theme to use from the main song for Die Another Day. And with Tomorrow Never Dies he used Surrender. Give him a strong title song, and I think he can create a strong score to surround it.

It's not Arnold's fault that he hasn't incorporated the main theme in two of his three outings, Qwerty and TheSaint007, it's the suits at MGM wanting a 'flavour of the month' or significantly less bearable singer warbling (in one case electronically warbling) the title song.

The composer has to collaborate with the writer(s) of the title song, or due to copyright/scheduling reasons, it's not possible to have a score with the main theme included.

Not trying to imply as such. I wish he would have a strong main theme from a title song.

Ah, sorry, misunderstood you :). Surrender was a brilliant theme (and well woven into the score). Shame the execs didn't think so.

No problem. :)

The powerhouse of a song in Surrender gave such a terrific theme, the only thing is that he took it from the end-title song. If he did that fully with a main title song, then I'd love to see the results.

"Surrender" always seemed to me to be the real title song of Tomorrow Never Dies before Eon Productions had the"contest" of having artists submit their own theme songs which Cheryl Crow "won". The cynic in me thinks that Eon Productions didn't believe that "Surrender" had enough pop music appeal to give the song enough or MTV/VH1 air time.

Didn't that have something to do with A&M records. I forget how it is now, but I thought that A&M records purchased the soundtrack rights to release the score and thus decided to recommend Sherly Crow with who they had a contract with.

Maybe it works in reverse where whoever the producers decide to sing the title theme song, that record label who owns the contract of the singer then has first dibs if they wish to release the score album.
