Not sure that that's been established, but having seen both volumes one after the other for the first time (on DVD) I seem to remember that the killer in that anime sequence has a distinctive ring which may or may not be on Bill's finger in the shots where we see him talking to Elle (while she's at the hospital) and stroking the handle of his sword - I'll try and remember to check whether it's there the next time I watch VOL 1.Bill - murdered O-Ren Ishii's parents when he was young together with Boss Matsumoto
Thanks for the chronology, though - be interesting to see the KILL BILL saga edited into chronological order.

Having just recently bought both, I think I agree completely with that ranking. For me, each character she fights tops the last one:Hmm, sorry about that Loomis, I should have been more clear.
How about the Assassination squad...
1. Bill - The best character in all of Kill Bill. Period.
2. Elle Driver - I love her to death. She is the girl who's always been in 2nd place and wants to get to be #1. Great stuff.
3. Budd - The man who knows what he's done and is willing to accept the consequences. A terrific performance by Madsen.
4. O-Ren Ishi - She's not the most developed character, but is a cool one to fight. The anime sequence is terrific, and her sword fight with the Bride is the most beautiful action sequence I've seen in a long time.
5. Vernita Green - Even less developed than O-Ren. I do like how she's just a normal mom and has moved on, but she doesn't really have anything that stands out about her.

In VOL 1, when Elle Driver takes the phone call from Bill at the hospital, she's told to abort the mission on the grounds that sneaking up on a comatose woman to do her in would be an underhand move and would "lower" the Deadly Vipers.
Okay. So why did Bill send her on that mission in the first place? Clearly, Elle didn't go to the hospital off her own bat to kill the Bride. Presumably, Bill decided that the Bride would be finished off while in her coma, but then changed his mind. Perhaps it's all intended to feed the idea that Bill (as he admits in VOL 2) felt sad after shooting the Bride, and that he couldn't ever quite bring himself to complete the job.
No biggie, but the scene does prompt the question.

I think Bill wanted Beatrix absolutely dead to cover his tracks entirely - but then he must have changed his mind when he thought about it. He must have felt a pang of guilt, or remorse - especially now that he had Beatrix's daughter around. He wanted to give Beatrix a chance to come back. Here's a question:

We do find out later that he had always been telling Beatrix's daughter that mommy would wake up and come for her. Presumably there was a part of him always expecting, maybe even wanting, Beatrix to wake up.

Good question indeed Loomis. I agree with Harmsway's answer, especially when you look at the dialogue at the ending of Kill Nill 2, as mentioned, with the daughter.Agreed. But Bill couldn't admit any of that to the Deadly Vipers, so he had to keep up the "front" of wanting the Bride dead, by such means as sending people like Elle on assassination missions that he planned to make them abort at the eleventh hour.
"Oh you don't owe her

Really? That sounds like it could be quite the interesting task.I will try to make a unoffical novelisation of the screenplay and the movies. And I will try to put things in chronological order. So there will be some changes in the Chapter names. And there will be 13 chapters instead of 10.
