Well, I'm not sure whether it was up to Stallone whether Rambo lived or died - he may have insisted on leaving the door open for a sequel or several, but it might have been the producers' call for all I know. Anyhow, the ending of FIRST BLOOD is still pretty downbeat.

Ultimately, it was decided by nearly EVERYONE involved to keep Rambo alive. They did a test screening with the original ending - everyone loved the film, was rooting for Rambo, and was just cheering along, but when Rambo killed himself (it was self-inflicted - Trautman held a gun up to him, but couldn't do it, so Rambo grabbed the gun and did it himself), everyone went quiet, and according to the director, someone shouted out, "IF THE DIRECTOR CAN HEAR ME - HE SHOULD BE STRUNG BY HIS NECK!". So they went back and filmed an alternate ending with Rambo living.

I really do like the movie, although, I would have liked to see a TRUE adaptation of Morrell's novel - one where neither Sheriff Teasle nor Rambo are the good guys. It's a very gritty and intense novel, and a lot of that is lost in the film. But still a great film, nonetheless - excellent score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Stallone is a "class" unto himself.  He has been a joke for most of his career.  Rocky was a fluke.  His career basically ended with Rocky IV and Dumbo First Brood Part 2.  Aside from Cliffhanger, he hasn't had much of a hit.  Oh, wait, there was Spy Kids 3D.  I have to give you credit there.
If you want to keep your vendetta against Pierce Brosnan out in the open, that is fine, but when you post how sorry you are about the state of someone like Stallone's career, get ready, because you have opened the floodgates, and what comes around can definitely go around.  Personally, I think it's kind of disturbing the comments you and other people post here about Brosnan.  You ought to be ashamed of yourselves, but that would require a conscience, humility, and other big words you would not understand.

It seems, then, that your view is indeed: "Since Loomis likes Stallone, I've decided not to like him".

You are allowed to make up your own mind on Sly, really you are. Think for yourself.

Don't know if there's any Rambo fan here but just a little news report:

"Dark Horizons reports on what is currently happening with Rambo IV:

We also want to make another Rambo movie with our good buddy Sly Stallone. Things are being sorted out as we speak and we will get to produce another Rambo film. Stallone is waiting to see the script and then do his own polish from there as he did with the previous Rambo movies. People will be in for a big surprise with this new Rambo film, but don't worry says Kassar, Rambo still uses a machine gun and blows lots of things up.

Cheers for that, Agent76, but I've heard it all before and won't be holding my breath - Stallone/the rights holders seem to have announced RAMBO IV (and ROCKY VI) about three times a year for the past 15 years.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed as well. I've only recently become a fan of the Rambo films (and original First Blood novel), and wouldn't mind seeing another adventure with our favorite Green Beret. Hopefully it could be soon so we could hear another high-energy score from Jerry Goldsmith.

All this talk about Rambo makes me wonder if there will be some kind of heroes like him or the Chuck Norris character from the Missing In Action films who emerged from Vietnam who will come from the Iraqi war, another unpopular war, in a decade or so. The Rock or Vin Diesel will probably play him.

If I had to pick, please let it be the Rock. We don't need any more Vin Diesel movies.

I find them to be pretty much two sides of the same coin. Diesel started out okay in Pitch Black and The Fast and the Furious, but has since gone downhill. Neither will ever come close to the heights Schwarzenegger or Stallone set for big tough guys in films.

of course not.
Schwarzenegger and Stallone are legends of the action films of the 80's.
Vin Diesel is no legend at all. :)

[quote name='Loomis' date='25 April 2004 - 14:36'] From being the biggest box office star on the planet, bar none (circa 1985), to this. Do ROCKY VI, Sly, RAMBO IV.... find another COP LAND-type script, heck, even another DAYLIGHT.... get yourself a role in "The Sopranos".... anything but this. Tragic. Truly tragic.

Actually, I gotta say that I quite like The Rock - he's a very energetic, charismatic guy, and whenever you see him interviewed, he's extremely down-to-earth and funny. The Scorpion King wasn't great, but still rather entertaining; I thought that The Rundown was a really good action movie. I personally think that The Rock could really have a chance at becoming a huge action star like Ahnuld and Stallone.

Unlike Stallone, The Rock can actually act. What is so tragic and sad about Stallone? He was a one trick pony who went back to the well way too many times. He's been a has-been for the longest time now, it's only amazing that some people are just now realizing this.

If you want to see a great Stallone performance watch Cop Land. The movie features Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert DeNiro. And Stallone steals the show. Stallone has, in my opinion, one of the greatest acting moments in the history of film in Cop Land.

I can genuinely say that Copland is probably the only decent cop film that Stallone starred in, the rest well guilty pleasures IMO: Cobra, Stop, or my Mom Will Shoot, and Tango and Cash.

It's funny some people want to rip Stallone for some of his choices, but at least he tried to do something different like Cop Land. He did a lot of bad projects, but at the same time, he tried a lot of different things, wrote and directed.

Harrison Ford is a revered star and probably the most successful actor of all time in terms of box office. But he rarely takes chances and hasn't had a real hit in years either. He's doing junk these days ike Hollywood Homicide and What Lies Beneath. He even turned down Michael Douglas's role in Traffic a few years ago.

See, I for one don't really like Ford all that much. I don't consider him that great of an actor, and think that he's held on too high of a mantle.

I really don't have too much against Sly. The only movie of his that I absolutely disliked was Get Carter. I could never really get into the Rocky films, but I've become a huge Rambo fan within the last year.

One movie of his that comes to mind is Daylight, which was actually quite good to my recollection.

Lately, I have been developing a lot of respect for Stallone. I know that David Morrell (the author of the First Blood novel) likes Sly and always speaks rather highly of him, and from what I've seen/heard, Stallone has a very good sense of humor.

And wasn't Stallone supposed to be doing RAMBO IV from January, or has that fallen through?
