The Geometry chapters of Fifth Grade Math. I don't know how I survived it in the 70s because it sure doesn't make any sense now!

As some who read Watchmen back in the day, I can't wait for the film. After seeing stills from the film which look exactly like the book itself. Sure there is a bit of fan boy complaining about the costumes. But I just can't wait to see Jackie Earl Haley as Rorschach - one of the most [censored]ed up 'heroes' ever.

Plus I heard all the Black Freighter stuff will be on the DVD as animation.

I just finished it today. It was awesome! I'm certainly looking forward to the movie, but I just don't see how they can do it justice.

Just starting Doctor No.

As some who read Watchmen back in the day, I can't wait for the film.

I'm a die-hard WATCHMEN fanboy... probably the greatest graphic novel ever written (though Alan Moore's FROM HELL might be superior).

But the film? Meh. I'm not particularly excited. Firstly, it's from Zack Snyder of 300 and DAWN OF THE DEAD re-make fame... not exactly the man you'd go to for dramatic subtlety, taste, and skillful artistry. And his persistent habit of talking about wanting to make the movie "cool" and such doesn't do much to reinforce my excitement.

Second, the script drafts produced under Snyder's control haven't been promising. The latest draft hasn't leaked, so we don't know the status, but the two drafts done by Alex Tse were woefully mediocre. I'm not holding my breath for the most recent draft, either, given that it was written by the same team that did TRANSFORMERS.

I'm certainly looking forward to the movie, but I just don't see how they can do it justice.

There's no way they can, honestly. To create a cinematic venture that's every bit as good as the graphic novel, they'd have to produce one of the greatest films ever made. I doubt that will be what's served up.

There's also the problem that WATCHMEN is uniquely created for the graphic novel medium. It's not a natural transition to any other medium, and I'm not sure Snyder has made the right changes to successfully reimagine it as a great film in its own right.

Right now, I'm reading the script by John Fiorella for a proposed film called Grayson. He made the script available on his site, untamedcinema.com. Sadly, licensing of the characters would make this a heinously expensive film; but so far, it looks like it would be a must-see!

Quite! Well done so far too. Very objective and 'uncolored', which is what I was looking for. And actually, I have to edit my original post. It's titled:

The Birth of the Church (30-312 AD). By Ivor J. Davidson. There is, or soon will be, a follow up book to that by the same author covering the years 313 through who-knows?

Nice. Glad to hear about the non-bias. I'll roughly guess the next book to either cover 313-5(something), or to the time of the Gregorian monks (900 or so).

Clive Cussler's ''The Chase''. Clive's first NUMA free adventure introduces Isaac Bell of the Van Dorn Detective Agency, tracking down a brilliant but murderous bank robber in the early years of the twentieth century. It's a setting that lets Cussler switch between the old west of riverboat gamblers and mining towns to break-neck car chases through the San Francisco streets.
The period detail is fascinating, giving Clive plenty of opportunity to indulge his passion for classic vehicles. Without all the expected fan service elements of the later Pitt novels to get in his way, Cussler shows what a first rate adventure writer he still is. Almost four decades on he's not run out of steam.

Got quite a few books on the go, as usual, but in the runup to DEVIL MAY CARE am seriously considering re-reading Sebastian Faulks' A FOOL'S ALPHABET, which I read for the first time only a few months ago. I'm just concerned that I'd get too overwhelmed and weep uncontrollably. A beautifully written and highly original novel, and one of the few books that has quite possibly changed how I look at the world (and I'm 33, BTW, so it just goes to show that even in one's dotage one can be turned quite potty by a great work of art). Quite simply a masterpiece.
