So, I just tried sake for the first time yesterday evening.
How was it?

Not bad...better hot, just as Sean said. (they gave me a choice) It's about as strong as a good port wine (so, somewhere between red wine and a nutty, sweet liquor). The server said, "You have to either sip or shoot. You can't just drink." So I decided to be more civilized and sip. And with the Japanese food I had, it was a rather perfect compliment.
Actually my understanding is that hot sake is the poorer quality of the two (since you can taste the delicate flavors more completely in cold sake). I've never noticed too discerable a difference, but I prefer the feel of the cold sake personally..
I just had a sake-tini this weekend.. sake, a little high shelf vodka, very thin strips of peeled cucumber instead of the olive. It was out of this world, I really recommend it (you didn't taste the cucumber, but the combined effect was the coolest-tasting drink I've ever had.. it fairly screamed cold).
If you ever want to be a complete heretic try mixing sake with lemonade (why waste the good stuff). It's actually delicious (I tried it in my younger more non-conformist days). The absolute perfect compliment to chinese take-out

Really? A Japanese neighbor gave me a giant bottle of Hakusan sake that sits on my credenza because it is too tall to fit in my booze cabinet (that's why I know the brand - I'm staring at it!). Now I'll have to get some lemonade and try your magic elixer! If you ever want to be a complete heretic try mixing sake with lemonade (why waste the good stuff). Will-do Bond Girl. Now that it feels like winter it might be tricky finding lemonade to mix with the sake!
Check Whole Foods
If you can find it, I recommend this kind (I know World Market carries it):
