I'd still say, base something or an idea or even a scene at very least from the novels. Why not take an idea or so from '007 in New York'? Or any of them! That won't happen though.

It will ruin the series, just like it ruined the Jack Ryan series, when they cast Ben Affleck as Ryan.

The only way I could see this happening is if it was a period piece, and it was Casino Royale

Ben Affleck was not the reason that series tanked. That script BLEW!, there was not story, Ben AFLAC was the icing on the cake.

Not that it matters, but I'm only 18, and I agree with much of you older fans that Bond such not go back to a first assignment. I mean it would be interesting to see Casino Royale played out in a newer version, but possibly update it to where it would not seem at his first mission. To me, the people behind Bond, lately, seem to be making a lot of bad choices. I think this could be the reason why it has lost some younger fans, because it hasn't been sticking with the good oldies, like Dr. No, in my opinion.

This topic is relevant again since Casino Royale will probably be Bond's first assignment.

Honestly, the pst few movies have not suffered from bad ideas, or (for the most part) bad casting, but mostly they have suffered from BAD WRITERS. The quips are getting so ridiculous, and I have said that before. Casino Royale would work fine as a continuation story, and it could be cleverly pulled off as a restart, but I do not have too much hope for a script by P&W (and I really do hope I am mistaken in the end). I understand that a film will have to have more action, but I will be really angry and further disappointed if they stray from what details they can use from the novel in making Bond 'hip' again.

At the very least, I hope the dialogue doesn't continue down its path and get further reduced to Bond saying, "Good morning, Major Boothroyd," and Q replying, "BOOBS!!"

I honestly don't think the writing is bad as some indicate--it could be better BUT I think the deeper problem is the direction the writers are given by the producers. That being said a move toward Bond Begins wouldn't be good. Also I think recent Bonds have been too harshly judged--they have been fun entertainments.

I know. However, he did resurrect his own thread, when the news was confirmed about CR, and he seemed more optimistic about it by then.

Statements like this make me laugh Bondfinesse....you obviously have no idea of the history behind the franchise....

You know that other actors portrayed 007 before Brosnan!

I like the comment "Send it to the toilet"!!!

I've got an idea. The next time somebody starts a thread announcing the 'death' of the Bond franchise due to a casting/director/location/whatever rumour, lets bump up this thread to remind people not to jump the gun. What does everyone else think?
