I have my own problems with the Thunderball ending. Those boats were moving exceptionally fast during the end sequence. It looked like the Disco Volante was hopping over reefs and small islands at 90 mph.

...Which is precisely why I love it so much. So many people complain about TB's slow pace, yet when things get sped up, the detractors still complain! You have to keep in mind that the filmmakers threw everything but the kitchen sink into the movie to "out-James Bond" the competition. Sure, the film fails on some levels (ostensibly speaking; I love everything about it) such as pacing and length, but that's what one gets with an epic.

Plus that shot of Bond climbing on the hydrofoils looks dangerous no matter what speed they were going!

Do we know if the skyhook stunt was done by real people or a couple of dummies?

I thought at least the beginning of it was for real.

The Army Special Forces still use the sky hook. They train to send messages that way. (You would think they could send messages electronically now!)Two guys hold poles with a wire connecting them and the plane with the sky hook grabs the wire with the message container connected. It's quite scary to watch. The plane is only a few feet off the ground.

I actually saw the skyhook demonstrated at an airshow some years ago, although using a C130 Hercules rather than the B-17 (I don't think that they would allow this contraption on the Sally B - Britains only flying B-17) at a USAF base in England, probably Mildenhall. There were even volunteers for the pick-up, but the organisers declined to accept any offers, using a very lifelike dummy instead.

I love the final scene where Bond and Domino leap up behind the plane. It's the disappearance of Kutz that bothers me, if anything about the finale. The suggestion about him crawling up a shore was a decent one.

He's one of those characters the film never seems to care much about. Most people didn't even know he had a name.
