Just a comment on SPIKE tv...

Spike is silly for two reasons:

aren't most of the other 99 stations on cable for men as well?

shouldn't "real" men be outside working on the lawn or playing golf or doing something constructive like taking over the world?
*do sence my sarcasm

My thoughts exactly, Athena007. I'll give you two more reasons SPIKE TV is dump...

1. Spike TV: the network for men. Yes, finally there's a place on TV where you can find sex and violence.
2. There already is a "network for men" -- it's called ESPN.

Very interesting zencat. How many rocks did you get thrown at ya? :) (Just kidding) I do wonder what the infamous narrator sounded like.

I would just like to say AMEN to Zencat and Athena and their comments on Spike TV.

And by the way John...I think you stole the ESPN line from me. :)

I dunno...I know a lot of women out there who watch ESPN. But, do you know some couple actually named their son Espn - no kidding, I heard it one morning on the radio, the DJs were making fun of them!

And the DJ's are just the beginning, imagine when the kid gets into school. :)

"Hi, I'm Espn."

*Cut to several fists slamming into the kid's gut.*

As for Spike TV, whether you call it TNN or Spike TV, the channel is utter garbage.

When did they change the name from TNN to Spike?

At least it's better than all that country stuff they used to have when it was the old TNN.

I believe it was about this last July/Aug, or sometime around there, I think.

Hey! I liked watching those damn rodeos! :) Bullriders Only, of course.

When I lived down in Florida, some of the people down there were very irritated that TNN had changed it programming from rodeos etc to sci-fi and action fare.

I caught some of the marathon while away for the holiday. Usually I don't watch theatrical films on commercial networks because of the usual two reasons:

1. Commercials commercials commercials
2. Outrageous editing

Why watch theatrical films on commercial networks when you can see them uncut without ads on channels like TCM, FoxM, Encore and Starz, or pay-per-view? Or just rent them for a couple of bucks at your nearest Blockbuster?

But this particular marathon interested me because I knew Spike TV was not going to cut any scenes from the films and especially because I thought they were going to provide some interesting commentary/contests/etc. during the commercials. What a disappointment. The commentary by those she-spies (oh pleez! :) ) was idiotic and worthless.

The only thing I got out of it was a clearer, sharper (and very unfavorable) contrast between a contemporary Bond film like TWINE v. the two films that came after it (DN and FRWL).

A couple thoughts:

1. While we can slag the ABC presentations now that we have pristine widescreen DVDs and videos and uncut movie networks, I still have a fond memory for them in the early days, when that was the only place you could see Bond films outside of a cinema.

There was nothing like finding out a Bond film was going to be on (normally on a Sunday or Friday night) and that fanfare played and the teaser showed highlights of the forthcoming film. You got hyped for that. ABC did butcher a lot, especially last year when they ran them. But for a time they were a godsend.

2. Is there a TWINE revisisonist movement sparked by its premier on the Spike marathon? What happened, did everybody just forget about it and rediscovered it?

As far as I know, I'm the only one to comment on TWINE vis-a-vis the Spike marathon. I'd seen it 4 times before (in a sincere attempt to like it) but I just never paid serious attention to it as much as I did this time while watching it with a couple of older relatives who'd never seen it and who love Connery's films. It was like watching it for the first time and I paid a lot more attention to it than ever before.

Even though ABC finally lightned up when the showed the Bond films last year I believe, and finally didn't cut any scenes or chop the films up, they were still sure to make sure that they added for each one: TV 14: D, L, S, V

L- lanuguage
S- sexuality
v- violence
D- (I don't lnow.) discretion, perhaps?

They are very careful with those films on regular broadcasting.

Qwerty: in the wonderful world of TV ratings, "D" is for dialogue that may be a bit inappropriate for the kiddies. Disney's fear was that there may be five-year olds imitating Sean Connery, uttering double entedres and asking Mommy for a martini instead of their usual Oreos and milk.

Zencat: that's a nice interpretation of the OHMSS miniseries you wrote.

Oh! Thanks AgentHMO! I thought it would be something like that, but I could never figure it out. 5 yr olds uttering double entendres?, they might be just a little bit too worried then. :)

:) Your sentiments are appreciated, Snow. I really don't mean to be nasty with the film, I honestly sat down wanting to improve my opinion of it.

That should have been a lesson in futility.

There is nothing redeeming about TWINE!

I did try to sit thourgh Never Say Never Again and Live and Let Die.

I just couldn't do it. The commercials are to be expects up to a point (I agree Zencat, they were a bit excessive) but the times when they decided to cut to commercial were nothing short of rediculous.

Loussy timing, you know, moments when you are in the middle of action or even at times, lines.

Sheesh.

Can't some of these stations hire someone who knows how to time out the film (you know - math - SOME of us learned it in high school) so the the film did not get chuncked so badly. Not to mention so of the editing that tends to go along with any network broadcast of a feature film.

Blah!!

Right you gents are...

Stick to the DVD's

I did the same thing recently with the DVD. I didn't watch the entire film, but parts of it and my opinion of it is pretty much unchanged. It's still way down there on my list.

And about the revisionist thing, Jaelle. It was something I read on the Brosnan forum where people were talking about watching TWINE during the Spike marathon and liking it.
