No way! He wasn't grumpy. He was Oldschool! I loved when he says to Bond "let's nip this Smiert Spionem in the butt. A termination warrant has been issued for him". It's so casual and sounds so business like;he just said to Bond I want you to go waste this tosser! I loved it! That's ruthless M for ya! I miss that MAN-sorry gals but M should always be played by a man (although I respect Judy Dench very much and her work as M but it's not the same for me). :)


Tarl I liked his grumpiness too I just think he could be a little *too* one-note about it. Look at Bernard Lee -- he was very much a strong man, but he shaded his portrayal of M with a bit of nuance. That's why I think his portrayal is richer. I *liked* Brown's M very much -- you're right, he was very "old school," very much the no-nonsense, no-time-for-sentiment type, which I welcomed. But that can wear thin after awhile without a little color once in awhile.

yeah but he didn't do as many films as M as Bernard lee. :)

True enough, that's a fair point. Maybe if he'd had the opportunity for more Bond films, we'd have seen an even more nuanced, memorable M from him.
