A sad passing of someone dear to the Bond series.

Thank you for the memories Mr Brown.

It's a shame this news took so long to get to the Bond community. Many thanks to Jordan for sharing it with us.

He was a great 'M'; I especially enjoyed his scenes opposite Timothy Dalton; he remians the only M to truly revoke Bond's licence to kill ('rescinded' is more of a suspension, no?). RIP Mr. Brown. Thank you for your contribution to the world of 007. You have been missed in the role despite fine work by Mrs. Dench. You will be 'M' forever . :)

I really liked him as M, maybe my favorite M, his scenes with Dalton were great, made me forget there was a previous M.

For old time sake "THIS IS NOT A COUNTRY CLUB OO7!!!!............YOU LICENCE TO KILL IS REVOKED""

"HEAVEN HELP YOU COMMANDER"

I know Puskin-Bond
"AND YOU THINK I DON'T!"

It was instinct-Bond

"YOU HERE TO FOLLOW ORDERS NOT INSTINCTS."

Celebrate his life, had a long one, rather not see it as sad, as many actors we know will die as were growing up, I hope they all live long and rich lives like Robert Brown, it's always sad when someone dies, but I'm glad he didn't die young, otherwise we would never have known him as M.

Can someone maybe find and post a picture of Robert in his scene with Dalton in Licence to Kill, where he revokes Bond's Licence to kill, it was the most memorable M scene for me.

Sad news indeed. :)

He was excellent in his roles of Admiral Hargreaves and M, and brought something to the roles that couldn't be imitated by other actors.

Rest in peace, Mr. Brown.

Sad news. I feel the scene in M's office in The Living Daylights is one of the best in the series.

I agree Lancaster. In fact I'd go so far as to say that TLD is the best M performance of them all. From the plane at the beginning to the concert at the end, M is out there in the thick of things and Robert Brown plays him superbly.
The only thing I dislike is in how some of his performances, he comes across as a bit short tempered and grumpy. But apart from that, he's the second best M.

If my memory is correct Robert Brown and Roger Moore were very close friends. In fact, I recall an interview some time ago when Roger was asked about Brown possibly being replaced as M. Moore replied (to the effect), "they're not going to do that to Bob Brown. He's my mate. He's the Godfather to one of my children."

Well, for better or worse, they did do it to him. That's show business.

One other observation I'd like to make on Robert Brown's M is that I felt the character of Frederick Gray was used too much as a sort of "co-M" during Brown's tenure. The great one-on-one dynamic between Bond and M in the earlier (and recent) films was muddled by the pressence of Gray in many of Robert Brown's scenes as M. The Gray character was used to help relay information to the audience (what does "magnetic pulse" mean? what does "smiert spionam" mean?) and that was fine. But directly mixing it up with Bond kind of stepped on M's toes. This was part of the reason Robert Brown's M had a hard time catching on.

Notice how the above mentioned favorite scenes of other board members did not include Gray.

I've been away from the board for several days and only just heard the news. Very sad to hear this. I hate to think of losing more and more of the old Bond regulars like this. Brown was great, I liked his work with Moore and Dalton. He established a good rapport with them both, different in tone for each of them, and it's interesting to compare his scenes with both actors.

I agree he was a bit too grumpy at times, Lee will always be my favorite (I like Dench too). But he set a very distinct style and tone from the other two that made him memorable in his own right. May the angels keep you close, Mr. Brown. They're lucky to have you.:)

I agree he was a bit too grumpy at times, "

No way! He wasn't grumpy. He was Oldschool! I loved when he says to Bond "let's nip this Smiert Spionem in the butt. A termination warrant has been issued for him". It's so casual and sounds so business like;he just said to Bond I want you to go waste this tosser! I loved it! That's ruthless M for ya! I miss that MAN-sorry gals but M should always be played by a man (although I respect Judy Dench very much and her work as M but it's not the same for me). :)
