Grrr....I really should have put RoboCop on my list...

Although, I'm not sure which movie I'd replace with that...

Great topic and it also gives you a good idea of what films people recommend so you can go watch them yourselves.

I'm a Hitchcock fan so I'll stick those in a seperate list!! Basically they're all fantastic... top ten though...

1. Rear Window
2. Vertigo
3. Psycho
4. Rebecca
5. Marnie
6. Rope
7. North-by-Northwest
8. Notorious
9. The Birds
10. The Trouble With Harry

Outside of those...

Clockwork Orange
Barbarella
Blow Up
Holy Smoke and The Piano by Jane Campian (wonderful, clever moving films)
The Apartment, Some Like It Hot and especially The Front Page all by Billy Wilder
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Goodfellas
Rocky Horror Picture Show and my girlfriend's favourite Clue both with Tim Curry
Erin Brocovich
and of course it never hurts to mention Raiders of The Lost Arc!

Boy, I really have to see Rebecca! I almost added Rope to my list, but It's just not the very best Hitchcock can do. As for Notorious, I just bought it and love it! (It's the Criterion Collection DVD and I had no clue why Bergman was holding a cup of tea, but now I do, nasty!)

"Must See" as in what do you recommend other people to see, not what you WANT to see.

What a great thread! I've enjoyed reading others likings of films I really enjoy. Glad to know some of us are on the same page. Here's my list of my personal favourites. I grouped them by actor. i know that there are more than one movie listed, so feel free to take your pick, one per actor:

1 CARY GRANT: TO CATCH A THIEF or NORTH BY NORTHWEST, or NOTOROIUS
2 ERROL FLYNN: ROBIN HOOD, or CAPTAIN BLOOD
3 HUMPHREY BOGART: CASABLANCE or TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT, or THE MALTESE FALCON
4 WILLIAM POWELL: THE THIN MAN (SERIES)
5 JIMMY STEWART: REAR WINDOW, VERTIGO, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE
6 STEVE MCQUEEN: BULLITT, THE GREAT ESCAPE
7 LAWRENCE OLIVIER: REBECCA, WUTHERING HEIGHTS
8 ROBERT REDFORD/PAUL NEWMAN: bUTCH cASSIDY, or THE STING
9 DAVID NIVEN: PINK PANTHER
10 SEAN CONNERY THUNDERBALL or ANY CONNERY BOND MOVIE (Whoops-thanks for the spell ckeck!)

These are maybe not the "best" movies, but they are the ones I like to watch the most.

There are a lot of really good films out there and I always have a hard time choosing a favorite. Here is my list, in no particular order, of some top quality films.

- The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

- Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb

- Stalag 17

- Lawrence of Arabia

- Unforgiven

- Band of Brothers (it's actually a miniseries)

- The Deer Hunter

- Twelve Angry Men (the Henry Fonda original)

- Insomnia

- Million Dollar Baby

There are so many more great films out there I wish I could add more but the ten I listed are films I give nothing but top marks to.

I always love it when these film lists get posted on the forums. They're a big help as they remind me of the good films I've seen which I always end up putting on my shopping list. These posts also give me an idea of what to rent next time I go to the rental place.

Since we are all enjoying seeing other members' picks, I thought it would be interesting to put up the top 10 list from IMDb so we can do some more comparing and contrasting.

2) The Shawshank Redemption

3) The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

4) The Seven Samurai

5) The Godfather PT II

6) Casablanca

7) Schindler's List

8) Pulp Fiction

9) One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

10) Citizen Kane

I can't believe I completely forgot about Schindler's List, especially when I own a copy.

Chimera01 included The Mark of Zorro (1940). Great flick! Highly recommended! You may also wish to see the 1927 version with Douglas Fairbanks Sr. A silent film, it endures because of Fairbanks himself. He performed his own stunts that are truly amazing.

Querty--Rebecca is a masterpiece.

Honorable mentions on my list include:

HARRISON FORD--Indiana Jones,(#1 and #3,--hated #2)
ORSON WELLES--The Third Man--yes Citizen Kane is the definitive Orson Welles film, but The Third Man is more of a favorite.
