The title topic is pretty much self explanatory. What are your top 10 favourite/recommended films of all time.

The list 'could' be endless, but what I asked for was a Top Ten not every single movie you've ever seen and liked. And you've taken the easy route by just listing a few series' that you enjoy. :)

I'll post my own list up once I get a few more replies and then see how it compares.

Regards

I will exclude Bond movies in this topic. Also I will focus mainly on stand alone films rather than trilogies and series (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.).

So many to choose from...

1. Casablanca
2. A Shot in the Dark/Pink Panther
3. Rear Window
4. Silence of the Lambs
5. Dr. Strangelove
6. The Matrix
7. Blade Runner
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. Rain Man
10. Ocean's Eleven (2001)

The list would no doubt change on any given day, but there's a general idea of my favorite movies.

I will lump trilogies (and film series) together. Generally though it should be pointed out that in every trilogy listed I consider the first to be the best (unless otherwise noted).

1. The Bond movies (TSWLM)
2. Flash Gordon (1980)
3. Back to the Future
4. Indiana Jones
5. Star Wars (1977)
6. Ffolkes (aka North Sea Hijack)
7. Parent Trap (1998)
8. Jaws
9. Wargames
10. Where Eagles Dare

Almost mentions:

North By Northwest
Heroes of Telemark

There are so many films I love and would recommend that instead of trying to compile a Top 10 I'll just mention the best film I've seen recently on DVD:

Bernardo Bertolucci's THE LAST EMPEROR. An adult, intelligent and unforgettable epic that must surely be one of the most visually astounding and emotionally devastating films of all time. Virtually everything about it is absolutely perfect: the writing, the directing, the acting, the production design, the costume design, the cinematography, the score, the editing.... (Hey, this baby didn't win nine Academy Awards for nothing.) There's even a Maurice Binder title sequence! An absolutely staggeringly marvellous film (okay, I'll stop raving now).

I am a big Bond fan, but no Bond movies would be on my list. Here are my favorite movies with a brief explanation of why:

1. Gone with the Wind - I like the success of Rhett Butler, especially since he was kicked out of West Point. I put Rhett in the same category as Sinatra and Bond.

2. The Picture of Dorian Grey - A good adaptation of the novel, and several lessons in there for the overly ambitious soul. Read the book and see the movie.

3. A Song to Remember - the life of composer/pianist Frederic Chopin. I learned about Chopin as a child with one of these story LP's that was sort of a play enacted bigography. And by the way, Chopin vodka is my favorite, it's made the old way - from potatos :) .

4. Saratoga Trunk - A good movie on how men make money the old fashioned way - with their fists [railroad fightiing].

5. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - This is in French. Yes, it's a chick flick, except it's the guy who loses out on the love of his life. Sad ending for those who settle for less. I think Splendor in the Grass might have stole this story line.

6. El Cid - A warrior betrayed by his own King. I saw this when I was a child and cried at the end as the dead Cid rides off to fight the Moors. The noblesse of warrior-hood.

7. Rebecca - Shows that women can be, and are, as evil as men.

8. The Best Days of Our Lives - not sure I got the title correct. I have only seen the movie twice, but it made an impact. Portrays post WW2 life in America.

9. Wuthering Heights - can't stop a determined man, but determination can drive one to madness.

10. To Live - This is in Chinese. It is an epic tale of revolutionary China, starring Gong Li. I have most of the Gong Li movies on VHS. We have a Chinaman in the family tree, my great-grandfather. He was a gambler, therfore the connection to the movie.

Cheers,

Derringer

My Top 10 'Must See' films of all time:

[OL]
[LI]Citizen Kane
[LI]Lawrence of Arabia
[LI]Bridge on the River Kwai
[LI]Apocalypse Now
[LI]The Lion in Winter
[LI]The Three Muskeeters (1973)
[LI]Dr. Stranglelove or How I Learned to Quit Worrying and Loved the Bomb
[LI]Star Wars: A New Hope
[LI]The Bicycle Thief
[LI]The Godfather: Part II
[/OL]

Although if you asked me this question next month, I probably would come up with a different list. :) It's tough to choose just ten films of "all time". But if I had to rescue ten films from a burning building, these would be the ten that I would choose.

A fairly run-of-the-mill list, to be sure. But these are ten films that I consider essential. Of course, my opinion is subject to change on a whim

Good choice! I've heard that's one of Hitchcock's best, and I'm currently trying to track that one down. However for a Criterion Collection DVD, the price is $34.95! Whoa!

This is one of my favorite movies and I think it is a fine example of a contemporary sci-fi film that still manages to make you think.
