Well, once I heard that Christopher Nolan was attached to direct, I knew that ol' Bats was in good hands. I haven't seen MEMENTO yet, but I did see INSOMNIA and thought it was a fantastic film (sure, it has its holes, but it was brilliantly made).

I'm glad to hear that Bale got the role, being as he was the only candidate who isn't TOO YOUNG for the part.

I'm not a huge BLADE fan, so I can go either way on Goyer.

Let's just hope they get Danny Elfman to score this one. I don't care what people say - I think that his BATMAN theme is the best superhero theme ever created for a film.

Wow, I thought that "Batman & Robin" had been the "License to Kill" of the Batman franchise (ie the movie that kills a series), but I am sure Bale will make a great Bruce Wayne.

Yeah, I think the entire world was sure that BATMAN AND ROBIN killed any possible future Batman films.

But at least WB managed to get their **** together to do this RIGHT. I'm not a huge fan of the character or anything, but I did enjoy the first three films.

I wonder why they feel it necessary to change the actor playing the lead role so much?

I know I was, I could only watch snippets of the last film without going mad.

That is a really good question. I'm not an absolute huge fan of Keaton's Bats, but he did a fine enough job. I was fine with Kilmer in the role. But Clooney? Well, he was just Clooney...

Here's hoping that they can get Bale to commit...

I guess Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For A Dream, Pi) will be working on this project too. With Christian Bale as the Dark Knight, it should be a GREAT movie! I am excited! :):)

EDIT: I am hearing that the movie is to be called Batman: Year One:

This is so eXciting... Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors, even though he's only done 3 films so far, but I adore all 3 of them (Following, Memento, Insomnia). I really think Chris is going to turn around the Batman movies for the better :)

And Christian Bale... totally, great choice!

Actually, that's another project that you're confusing this with. They're two different films altogether, I believe.

Year One was one of a few early concepts being kicked around for a Batman film, along with a live action version of DKR and Batman Beyond. Batman: Year One was meant to be based on the excellent "Year One" comics that were made during the late 80s early 90s that harked back to Wayne's earlier years (late 20s).

So far the film has an unknown title (but it still may be based on Year One).

I was a herr-uge Batman fan before my obsession with Bond kicked in, and I still have a wealth of knowledge concerning the Dark Knight, so I'll look forward to having conversations with any of you Batfans on the boards.

This is great news for me. Batman and Robin was a horrible mess, and I'm glad that WB have taken such a step back from Schumacher's ideal. I want to see the gritty detective of the 1940s and 1980s, not some camped up hero of the 50s and 60s. Keaton was inspired casting, and it's a shame Kilmer bowed out after falling out with Schumacher on the set of Forever.

I am very happy! :)

Christian Bale, Christopher Nolan...yes, this is working. Now all they need to do is hang a gigantic NO WARNER EXECUTIVES ALLOWED sign on the soundstage door and we may finally get a good Batman movie.

Of the guys on that short list, Bale was the only one who physically seemed like he could do the job. One of my friends said he thought Keaton was a good choice because he said nobody would think of him at all being Batman, which was key to his preserving his identity.

That's true, but to do the stuff Batman does, he's got to be a guy you physically think can take on super villains and pull off incredible feats. Not that Kilmer or Clooney fit that bill necessarily, anybody whose seen American Psycho can be confident Bale is a guy who looks fit and can still play the millionaire playboy guy while still maintaining that tortured soul thing.

In other words, he's a great all-around choice and has a fine director to work with. I think I can look forward to this Batman adventure.

Jack, you really need to see Memento...it is truly a special/unique film, very diabolical.

Christian Bale as Batman.

If it's a successful matchup, it'll add more weight to the argument that Bond could be played by an American. Works both ways could it not?

Well seeing as how Batman is American (presumably) and Bond is British, I don't think so...

In theory, yes, but there is a long and proud tradition behind the big screen portrayals of Bond that does not exist when it comes to the BATMAN series (which started in 1989 and so far amounts to only four films). Likewise, no one really cared about Bridget Jones being played by an American, since there was no great heritage to screw with. A non-British or non-Commonwealth actor won't easily be permitted to don the tux.

If an American were to play Bond, he'd have to be a truly exceptional candidate for the part, one who blew all possible British and Commonwealth rivals right out of the water.

That said, we nearly had John Gavin and James Brolin as 007, and I'm not sure that they were seen as exceptional candidates, merely "any port in a storm" choices. And Mel Gibson was supposedly approached for THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS and GOLDENEYE - isn't he American, not Australian?

now if they can just write a good story...I hope these guys understand the character...Bruce Wayne is the secret identity, not Batman....he's a detective and he doesn't kill....
and they need to tone down the gadgets and ditch the black rubber suit and go for a more faithful grey with a simple black bat outline on it...
make this dirty and not flashy like the last two..
maybe Bale can pull it off, but this story is all about one twisted guy who's not a playboy, sure that's the act, but Batman is easily just as messed up as any of the villains...
it better be about him and not some guest villain...

I actually got it for my girlfriend for her birthday, and for some reason we still haven't watched it. I do really want to, though. I did finally see Bryan Singer's incredible film THE USUAL SUSPECTS recently - absolutely brilliant.

... and the script is co-written with David Goyer of Blade and Blade II. Things are shaping up nicely, this movie might be entertaining. When I first heard about another Batman film, I thought it was a terrible idea because of the absolutely wretched Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Thank goodness they had the sense not to re-hire Joel Schumacher!

If they had hired Schumacher, I would have started a protest myself, but I would put it past the WB executives as they appear to be a bunch of dumb schmucks.

Thankfully they didn't screw up with ol' Bats. Hopefully they can get an idea with Supes.

Oh, I have very strong beliefs that McConaughey is the right man for the job. I recently saw some tabloid pics of him with Sandra Bullock from when they had spent a day boating - MM's hair was longer than usual and rather WAVY. I couldn't determine the color very well, but he was wearing a silver band around his wrist (a Doxa, perhaps?), and had his shirt off the entire time (to work on his tan?). And believe me - it looks like he's been working out quite a bit...

The Usual Suspects and Memento are two of the absolute best (non-Bond) films for me. I could watch them repeatedly. I really get chills thinking about it.

Yes. Christopher Nolan directing Batman. Let's do it.

Hahahahaha, hopefully not. It seems to me that Nolan would keep this more of a gritty detective/action movie than an over-the-top cartoonish one.
