No, I think he was a strong henchman. I think Elektra King was a strong villian, and certainly IMO the villian of The World is Not Enough.

I don't think Elektra was ever intended to be the villain. Purvis & Wade, Michael G. Wilson, Pierce Brosnan, director Michael Apted, and Robert Carlyle himself all referred to Renard as the villain. Sure, Elektra would have made a stronger villain, but she's never truly brought into that role.

I guess that's just another weak point of TWINE ...

About Carver: The idea is brilliant, but the final result is (like in most Brosnan-Bonds) rather dull.
I never found him too menacing.

....But weak villain. His wardrobe was just brown and navy nehru jackets wasn't it? Quite retro Blofeldesque.

What do you lot think about Stamper then? Is more divulged about his background/reason for being in the Benson Tomorrow Never Dies novel?

Regarding Stamper, I think they had a good idea to make him a strong, menacing type ( like Red Grant) but I don't think they evolved his character enough to have a real screen presence. There is definitely a lot more info about him in the novel, (especially about loving pain.)

Sure, Carver's plan is menacing, but he as a person is not.

The low rent Blofeld was a underwritten part ! Just what did Renard do that was menancing ? The screenwriters Purvis and Wade dropped the ball with this one . The aspect of not feeling any pain ,should have lead upto a great punch up between Bond and Renard . Not that weird stuff on the sub !

first, re: stamper. in benson's novelization, stamper is a kinky and sadistic animal...heavily into pørn with a fetish for extremely kinky S and M type sex to the point of nearly snuffing a subservient sexual underling...hardly the kind of stuff MGM cud put up on screen.

second, re: carver.

the least politically correct villian: doest mind taking a shot at "german effiency" or mocking the chinese (wai lin' karate moves)....which i find humourous, btw.

also he has the most delicious lines.

could have been better....could have been worse....mid pack, i'd say.

stronger than the kristatos', koskovs and kamal kahns of the canon...not as menacing/magnificent/memorable as the largos, goldfingers, blofelds (unseen FRWL and Thunderball variety), zorins and draxs of the genre.

Elliot Carver was a whiny little bitch. He was the biggest flaw in TND.
One of the -- if not the -- weakest villain in the series.

Second best villian of the Brozzie era, just behind Graves. Like Graves, he gives you the genuine impression that he's a psychopath. I happened to find the karate bit hysterical.

Carver was a nice try.

There is nothing wrong with going OTT, esp. not as a Bond villain (obviously), but simply OTT isn't necessarily enough. It also has to be enjoyable. I don't enjoy him. Eccentric performance that ends up being annoying. Oh well.

A Bond villain ideally should be an omniscient, seemingly invincible character who views Bond as an insignificance, or a mere child. From the moment Carver asks Bond to "call me Elliot," and Bond continues to call him by his first name, that mystique is gone. Carver has money, a business empire, an army of henchmen, and a stealth boat, but he comes across as spoiled and ineffectual. When he stands at the rail of the stealth boat and screams, to no one in particular, "Get those fires out!" and the fires continue to burn, he illustrates how empty a character he is.

He may rage and scream, but there's no depth to this guy.

I like Elliot Carver. He's not a physical threat to 007 but what villain really is? Sanchez? Trevelyan? Maybe a couple of others? Their henchmen are who the real physical threats are. Carver has a great plan (insane though it may be), and he is determined to see it through. He is also very funny (and yes, I like him making fun of Wai Lin's kung fu fighting style) with some terrific lines such as "There's no news, like bad news."

Carver is not the best of Bond's villains, but he is in the top half of the 007 pantheon to me.

Did anyone see this story recently?

Brazil TV host 'ordered killings'

Similar idea to Carver's "plan" in TOMORROW NEVER DIES, I thought.

I heard this on the radio and thought the exact same thing - scarily similar.

It does seem silly, but he was mentally ill, at least I'd like to think so.

Well as Carver once stated himself "The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success".

Carver as written and performed was right on target for a 90s villain. An annoyingly egotistical, uber-nerd overly reliant on technology to reach his goals. A character extrapolated from the likes of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, etc.

I put Elliot Carver down as the worst Bond villian ever. Pryce was awful.

I wouldn't say 'magnificent' but Carver was a memorable villain at least. They gave him a decent amount of screentime, Pryce is a great actor and he got a few good lines. As a whole, very average. We have seen far worse villains (Whitaker, 006, Greene) but also far better (Goldfinger, Scaramanga, Drax).

Elliot Carver is one of my favorite villains. I think Bruce Feirstein had the right idea to create something new for a Bond villain. Jonathan Pryce is perfect casting. Carver gets some of the best lines ever:

"Good morning my golden retrievers! What sort of havoc shall the Carver Media Group Network create in the world today?"

"Words are the new weapons. Satellites, the new artillery."

"There's no news, like bad news."

AND, OF COURSE,

"Delicious!"

What is your take on this villain?

He was absolutely perfect ! I vote for complete fool villain ! B)
