I couldn't tell u if he was contracted for 7 because I'm not sure, but it's correct that the killing of tracy was intended to be the pre-title for DAF. I think it was Peter Hunts idea.
Should he have got another chance!

I'm sure Lazenby wasn't "contracted" for seven, though that may have been UA's intention. He was well underway filming OHMSS before he actually got around to signing that contract according to Peter Hunt. He hadn't signed on for DAF, but had been paid an advance which he returned. Then he walked.
Do you think he still wakes up in the wee small hours and says "What was I thinking!?!!"

DAF was still a kind of revenge story, although we didn't see the film concentrating on this. The pre-title sequence was Bond's revenge of Tracy's death. Straight after that though, the film goes off totally somewhere else, and Bond doesn't seem to remember Tracey at all. I thought there would have been more of Bond relating to Tracey in the film.
I'm babbling, and can't make sense of what I just wrote - sorry!

With Connery back, I think they were trying to pretend OHMSS never happened.
