I wouldn't bet on him being Sir Miles.

How about Miles Messervy without the prefix?

I think you're grasping at straws there.

That was my thinking as well, but I'm not holding out too much hope on that. It would certainly be a nice touch for us all, but I can certainly understand why the writers might not want to go there.

Judi Dench's M will be forced to leave her post, and Fiennes' secret character is likely to fill in her vacant slot.

I'm going to stick my neck out and put my money on Fiennes being James Moloney. Though he may not be a neurosurgeon.

I kind of doubt that EON will go back to the male M thing. I have a feeling that when Dench retires, they will keep a female M, at least as long as Barbara is in control.

Right. Fiennes' name keeps coming up in connection with being M. No female actors have been mentioned as possible candidates for the role. Clearly, EON are looking for a woman.

I'm sure there will continue to be important and substantial (read "non-bimbo") female characters in the Bond series, whether due to Barbara Broccoli's influence or simply because modern mores demand it, but it's strange to suppose that M in particular will always be female simply because that's the new status quo. If anything, I think Dench's long tenure and professional repute has made it very unlikely that her immediate successor will be a woman. She'd be a tough act to follow. I wouldn't be surprised if some version of Moneypenny were reintroduced precisely to ensure that Bond has a long-term female ally (and foil) after Dench has departed the role.

I'll tag along with you here. I suggested Moloney as soon as the name "Mallory" was mentioned as possibly being overheard - and consequently disappeared in a cloud of forum dust - but for the sake of consistency, I'll return to that line of thinking.

Well, that's where I'm getting the Moloney idea from. So it's not a case of you agreeing with me, but of me agreeing with you. If this turns out to be true, you get the credit for thinking of it.

That would feel forced, tired, repetitative and invite unafavourable comparisons and "Barbara" doesn't have a track-record for making those sort of decisions; they'll either revert to a male version of the character or (Shock! Horror!) dispense with he/she/it altogether.

IMO, of course...

If he isn't the new M, it will be rather anticlimactic.

Another possibility is that he's playing a 00-agent. I can imagine Eon wanting to keep that a secret. 00-agents apart from Bond have rarely been shown onscreen. If Fiennes were playing one, the mere fact would generate a certain amount of excitement, and would also disclose something about the plot.

Forgive me to those who read my previous post. I thought that Fiennes was being setup as the new Blofeld. OOOPs.

Given the rumors about him playing the new M, I keep picturing the M from Never Say Never Again. I could see Fiennes acting like a total dbag to Bond and talking down on him.

Just a thought.

Ralf Finnes was on the news earlier with a beardy fizzog. So, presumably, he must have finished his work on the Bond film now.

I was going to say, it doesn't sound like Fiennes has done all that much work - but then I remembered that we're already three months into shooting, and production has been flying through locations; I don't think they've spent any more than two days at one location (except Pinewood, but they've no doubt got plenty of sets there).

It’s extraordinary, isn’t it? Almost halfway into the shoot already and how little we know. Not even most of the character's names. This is so unlike any other Bond film that I’ve followed the making of.

Halfway in, I knew more about Octopussy.

Pretty cool really.

But is it 1/3 or 1/2 (or does it simply not matter)...

I think it's pretty cool too, actually.

Keep in mind that it's really nothing new for Eon. The only difference is that they've been more successful at preventing leaks this time around. A lot of the info we got for the last few films (like IGN's casting review and LatinoReview's script leak for CR, or basically anything Gemma Arterton said for QoS) was unintentional. Better safeguards and better non-disclosure abounds for Skyfall.

Well, 3 months would ordinarily be halfway, but this time nothing is ordinary. It's ever so frustrating, but the masochistic side of me also finds it all pretty cool.

Umm.. at the QoS start of shoot press conference they issued a plot summery that basically told the whole story.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE continues the high octane adventures of James Bond (DANIEL CRAIG) in CASINO ROYALE.

Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (JUDI DENCH) interrogate Mr White (JESPER CHRISTENSEN) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.

Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (OLGA KURYLENKO), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (MATHIEU AMALRIC), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation.

On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (JOAQUIN COSIO). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.

In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene’s sinister plan and stop his organisation.

It was mentioned in another thread that MI5 might make an appearance in SF. I was wondering if its possible Ralph Fiennes character is something like the head of the MI5 and then he is later promoted to the head of MI6.

Perhaps, but I hope not. That would be an extremely unlikely career transition within British intelligence. Given that he's believed to give M a severe dressing down, I think he's more likely to be a very senior government official or civil servant.
