I thought if one person had them all in Firsts and signed it would be you Simon. I wonder who has all Firsts signed. I bet it's Zencat! B)
[/quote]

At some point I probably had most of them, however I guess you never think the worst will happen and you can always get another signed at a later date, so probably lent a couple out, lost a couple in moving.... I know I kick myself everyday, hell I don't possess all his other books either. My wife brought me back the Coronet edition of 'No Deals' this morning from the local charity shop!

Yeah, I've also noticed the dramatic spike in activity in the John Gardner (1981-1996) forum. Qwerty's article about the campaign definitely got us some more votes and followers at @GardnerRenewed. B)

Exactly what do you mean by "Today's version of this kind of cover?" Author and title on the front with a small montage of stuff in the story?

It's funny you bring up Clancy and LeCarre, I love them both. It's not fair comparing them to Fleming and Gardener because those guys are going in a completely different direction.

I was not comparing Clancy Le Carre, Forsyth, Littell and Higgins to Fleming and Gardener. I was more of talking about the kind of readers out there. Who would only Fleming and Gardener and not the others. Also how they see the difference and why they go for that type.

Can we just read through what we have written before we post guys. Not being rude and spell check won't hi-lite it, but Gardner please NOT Gardener. Don't usually bother to point this out but as this section of the forums is about JG I reckon it would be good to spell his name right.... don't you?

I have all the US first editions signed, including Cold Fall inscribed to his friend and neighbor in the US, Jim Dodd (whose name is used in one of the books - SeaFire, I think). Jim told me he had JG signed two Cold Falls for him and JG said these were the only Cold Falls he ever signed, so I consider this a petty sweet collectible. In fact, I keep that in the same special (secret) place I keep my Casino Royale first.

All my UK firsts are signed except WLOD, GE, and COLD. But I'm happy to at least have them in first. Signed copies online are unaffordable.

I think you might actually have one of the best Bond collections of books in the world then Zencat. Very impressive.

Does anyone else recall maybe a year ago the whole set of Firsts of John Gardner's signed Bond books going for a couple or so grand in an auction? What a sweet collection that was.

I'm glad I aggressively collected the Gardner books as they came out because all my books are like new and I even the signed editions didn't cost me an arm and a leg. I wouldn't be able to put together this collection today. Signed UK editions in the fine condition are crazy expensive (especially the later books).

And just to continue boasting, I have all the UK and US paperbacks in first edition. And lots and lots of later printings of all stripes.

Now just waiting for my new 30th Anniversary Editions to arrive. I hear they're coming out sometime in 2011, right? B)

Bond fans should know that Fleming is not spelled Flemming and that Gardner is not spelled Gardener. Let's show a little respect for these men, please.

When in doubt, look at the forum titles for the correct spellings.

You think so? I don't think it's rude, after all, neither of them seem to complain about it. You're just a stickler.

And I don't mind the extra letters in my name at all, if i could I would throw in a couple stars and thunderbolts too.

To be fair John Gardner's son Simon minded which can be seen in his above post. I like having Simon here so lets not go off topic. Lets discuss the future of John Gardner's books getting re-printed.

I do try to be Zencat, but some people would rather focus on spelling rather than the content of posts. It's one of the reasons I left the forum for almost 5 months, the petty stuff that some of the posters get caught up in. I've got a Master's degree in Literature, if I wanna not spell check I'm entitled, after all, I'm not at the office proof reading. This isn't a pay check, it's entertainment.

No problem dude, it's just dashing off a post quickly I really don't think it's gonna be proof read by the peanut gallery and critiqued.

After all, I was trying to make a point about a unified cover art.

I think there are some who just don't like the idea of James Bond continuation novels (all authors). They want to live in a world of Fleming purity, so any suggestion of reprints is no go for them. Hey, I get that. But I am happy to see just how small that number is.

Well, even amongst John Gardner fans there seems to be a split. Those who love the whole run and some who think the first part of the series is better. Maybe they are the ones who don't want them reprinted. Yes there is an appreciable change in tone, but I don't see it as being of lesser quality. I've noticed that many have a problem with Man From Barbarossa which I think is just heart rending and the great setting in Russia. Many don't like Brokenclaw because of it's climax (which I'll admit isn't that strong).

Or the ones who don't like Gardner at all ... if that is at all possible.

Ahh, I never looked at it from that point of view. Fair enough and I might have been in the same mindset 2 years ago until I read on. I don't begrudge them however.

Valid point. But the counterpoint can be made that if were were only to stick to the originals then we would only be into Siegel and Shuster's take on Superman even though most of what we know of the character came after. Or sticking to Bob Kane's original take on Batman which is a bit different than what we have today and ignores all the great contributions of subsequent authors and all the growth that's taken place.

While I don't see the need (see my earlier posts) I wouldn't object.

So perhaps its Christopher Wood, Raymond Benson and the heirs of Geoffrey Jenkins.

I don't think it's Benson since his 6 orginal novels and 3 short stories will have been re-released once the second omnibus comes out on August 17, 2010. B)

Even back in the day you were a visionary. I've managed to cobble together some pretty good condition hardcovers of all of the novels so I would definitely welcome those 30th Anniversary Editions. They would look perfect sitting on the shelf next to my 2008 Centenary Edition Fleming novels.

I gotta say, my collecting instincts have yield me some valuable investments, which is good because I certainly haven't been able to bring any of those smarts (or luck) to the stock market. In that regard, I have a true talent for losing money.
